I always had an impression that the high cost is actually due to low supply of doctors and this low supply is due to overregulation driven by the doctor lobby. Where (if I remember correctly) there're limits on the number of new MDs education institutions produce, or a number of licenses, forgot what exactly.

The demand is inelastic, the supply totally is elastic in a normal situation, but it is made inelastic by regulations, restrictions, etc.

But this craving for benefits is just a product of the ego. There’s a deeper layer to it—simply experiencing reality is already profound enough on its own. And being more aware of this beautiful reality during your lifetime, instead of literally being asleep at the wheel, is pretty amazing.

While I’m all for supporting various alternative models, usually anti-capitalist folks don’t suggest anything specific, except maybe government interventions to cap CEO salaries or something like that – which is clearly just a bandaid and still leaves a bunch of loopholes.

I personally can tell you that if I were a CEO, I would not be able to sleep at night if my company's revenue, profits and valuation are booming and I fire tens of thousands of people for no other reason than because I can and it will keep costs (that the company can easily afford) down.

No shareholders in their right mind would hire such a CEO, so your chances are pretty slim.

This is a weird assumption, see my comment above - there already exist a bunch of airplanes operating in the US with no TSA. Also, what’s the point of bombing small airplanes? Why not to bomb a bus instead? The impact would be larger.

This is already the case with a bunch of small plane airlines. They are also reasonably priced (compared to chartering). I personally love JetSuiteX (JSX) and the experience is truly incredible, with just 5 minutes to board the plane from entering the hangar. No TSA, no BS. There are a few more with similar service, but as far as I know, JSX was the one that found the loophole in the regulations that allowed them to run their operations this way legally. Proliferation of small aircraft cheap to operate will make this model ubiquitous.

Lol what? As a single anecdotal point, I just bought meta rayban specifically for ai (and btw it sucks and I’m disappointed and chatgpt is much better). The fact that current generation of devices is not selling well tells more about the form factor. Glasses are the way to go and we just need chatgpt in the glasses - this would be a huge seller.

I have a bit of a spiritual, but also actually a super practical take.

Imo this whole situation finally liberates us from chasing things for personal gain, for result, being driven by selfish ego. And instead allows us to focus on what we really enjoy or find meaning in _doing_, for the sake of the process, not the outcome. Which is basically the definition of selfless action (karma-yoga) and is one of several paths to elevated conciousness.

Can confirm from my personal experience (of being a shitty but joyful musician among other things) that this indeed is a great way of dealing with this reality. The key is not to compare yourself to AI or other people but to just keep playing your own games that have personal meaning and satisfaction.

Only if you are driven by selfish desires, but that’s not the only way of operating even when there’s no external/“absolute” definition of meaning. See “selfless action”, “karma yoga” and “dharma” on page 45 of the spiritual life manual.

Just to counter your absolutist point: I do. The imperfections and the story and everything make a thing more alive. In general, in most of the cases I’d prefer an item made by a single hardcore artisan or a small team to anything factory made. There are natural limits to this (airplanes), but for most of the things this definitely stands.

In most of the places it’s trivial to exchange crypto for local currency in p2p fashion, often for cash.

I’ve been paying multiple people and teams remotely via btc in the past years. Even if you can send a wire, sometimes it can be cheaper/easier to send crypto. But in many cases it’s not even possible to send large amounts of money without incurring massive fees (international paypal, western union, etc). Moved hundeds of thousands of dollars this way by now for purely legal economical reasons, helping a bunch of people make money they would not make otherwise.

Edit: relatedly, not everybody wants to pay their local taxes (and who am I to judge people in various life situations?). This itself is a _massive_ saver for the folks. Send somebody $5k usd a couple times and their bank will start asking complicated questions.

PS: HN is such a strange community. In one thread people complain about US cities and SF in particular crumbling due to government mismanagement. In another they think that a new city built by some of our own members will devolve into a dystopia and give it no praise. This is an amazing idea and they already have land!
