I predict a massive uptick in linux switchover as soon as installation and activation of some newer ms-office versions (2019, 2021 or 2024) become possible. I think 2019 was the first that shipped with a full fledged power query.
In my experience, as of now the one that works best and seamlessly is the 20 year old office 2007.
What does "industry" mean. Which firms were involved? Were all firms involved?
People don’t like paying for software, demand constant updates and hate subscriptions.

I think his video makes it clear how hard it is to make something made-in-america--even this product isn't. On the product front alone, people would be making a decision to spend ~5-10x something made-in-notamerica. gains from trade is a fundamental idea that has proven to be mostly beneficial to the masses. suddenly claiming self-reliance yields freedom seems very politically aligned.
Maybe one of their execs fat fingered and shared something embarrassingly.
I can't put my finger on it. Something about the recent announcement video of de-extinction of dire wolves immediately filled me with skepticism. I don't know if it was the very marketing-y video or the animations or what? But I didn't know enough to question it. This video by Hank Green does a nice summary as can be gleaned from the title. Several of Colossal's claims are questioned and his informed position explained.
Maybe I'm not understanding what's meant by sponsorblock support? Sponsorblock works with invidious too and has worked for at least two years. There's a toggle that needs to be enabled in the addon (if I'm remembering correctly).
You should never double click to open a csv file in excel. You should ALWAYS import the file into excel. Set your types during import. Many of the complaints about excel's csv handling in this thread are user errors.
Gdi. I had it installed for over 1 year as a backup browser. Even used it along with thorium winupdater since last few months, so probably had it updated multiple times too. Stick to Firefox folks.
I've had a blank landing page for a while. However, I tend to prune channels pretty aggressively with BlockTube. YouTube still works ok, though- cause I can just search and start watching videos. My geotargeted homepage has only garbage to offer anyway.
There are other apps, though. The id system of the local apps are fairly lax, so the driver will just create another account. Besides, they don't always cancel rides. Sometimes they accept "manufactured" rides. E.g. once you've hailed a ride on the street normally, they might tell you to initiate a search through [ride-sharing-app] and then accept it (to maybe complete some quota that lowers their commission payable).
Import CSVs into excel; don't double click to open. Been telling this to colleagues since excel 2007 days; still have never managed to get anyone to follow this advice.
Not even slowness for me... Each time I've had to change phones was because of a failing battery at around the 4 year mark.
I checked to. On my computer, with a fresh install, i have to kill Utility: Bat Ledger Service from the brave task manager every time the browser is started. Thankfully it stays closed.
The ads and crypto stuff are also not exactly as simple to opt out as "literally disable it in the welcome screen when you first install" as one commenter enthusiastically mentioned.
IIRC, the background processes for these ad and crypto services still run in the background even when you disable them. I haven't checked the browser in a long while. But it's easily verifiable by opening the brave task manager.

Duckduckgo has pretty much become one of the mainstream search engines. Normal, everyday users who find google's surveillance offputting because of its comprehensive nature probably think they are comparatively more private with something like duckduckgo. They will probably not react as strongly as power users or more privacy oriented folk. So, i doubt the points of view on hacker news is very damaging to duckduckgo.
Apart from ublock filters you can use the Wikiless frontend. An addon like libredirect will redirect to an instance automatically.
Not in front of a computer rn, but f12 should bring up the save as dialogue box (unless hijacked by another program).
My workaround quite a while ago was to start a group chat with a friend and then removing him (he came up with the idea). Now it's a one member group where i share links/files for convenient (for me) access between my pc and phone.
Well, sleep is my chronic illness.

I have noticed the same thing in multiple fora. Anytime there's any discussion involving brave, the comments are swarmed by rather vocal and hardcore fans and usually the discourse devolves into pretty extreme shilling.
That is probably only cosmetic as the crypto related background processes will continue running and cannot be turned off. https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/issues/5429
I haven't installed brave in a long time, but maybe someone can try disabling the 'features' and check if these processes then turn off or not.
Even worse; on leap years it will be temporarily renamed to Microsoft 366. /s
I think the office 365 suit has been called Microsoft 365 for at least two years now.

are we not mixing up private networks with user (consumer) privacy? not an expert by any means, but isn't VPN used exactly for creating non-public networks? e.g. when you log into your work network when WFH or connecting your branch office users to the head office servers and corporate applications...
I'm not seeing the force here; maybe dark patterns... I seem to remember being able to change default browser on Win 11 to Firefox/chtomium without much hassle. Its just the edge:// links that will still open with edge (understandably). I was even able to uninstall edge altogether with winget.
