There has already been a vastly simpler system that predates OS X: Linux or BSD combined with X11 and an arbitrary window manager. Just stay away from anything that calls itself a "desktop environment" and you should be fine.

Personal recommendation: http://www.archlinux.org & http://awesome.naquadah.org/ -- a nice compromise between easy configurability and the "suckless" simplicity mentality.

Linux (the kernel) actually has manpages? Are you sure? I've never seen any.

Case in point: check the output of lsmod. How many of those modules have a corresponding manpage? My guess: zero.

Same question for a BSD system (with lsmod changed to kldstat or whatever): all of them.

Let me rephrase what I really feel: After my three previous Nokia phones, I don't feel Nokia is a viable producer of high quality phones. In fact, part of me wants to punish them for selling me such junk and enveloping me in some sort of cognitive dissonance field that made me think they were doing good work.

Then again, Elop got there to change exactly that, so perhaps I should give them a benefit of doubt now.

Is anyone doing high quality non-smart phones anymore? I'm looking for something that's small, sturdy with long battery life. Preferably with good music playing.

It's frightening how cars' software is bloating up. I would've thought that a product that very easily kills people if things go wrong would have been under more scrutiny.

Smart people go to college but they don't know what they want yet. If they find out and make it before they graduate, they drop out, because it would be an incredible waste of time to do otherwise.

And then I would be paying extra for the OS X that I never use. Same problem, really.

You can install Linux on it, though, which can be superiour to OS X. On the other hand, it's a very irritating that one is forced to buying an OS that one is never going to use on the machine.

My personal guess (using my personal metrics) is that there are 10^3 to 10^4 successful Java projects and 10^9 failed ones.

One of the lessons: Do not use Java for production applications.

Sorry for being slightly flippant, but I would think that panic is a good idea if one is dependent on Java.
