The Units seem to be independent i.e. could be followed in any order. Can someone knowledgeable confirm this? I know Set theory etc is the basis of many things usually in a formal mathematical setting, hence asking.

The society of mind is an interesting reference. I remember browsing through it around the late 90's when it came out. It seemed to provide some theory for the basis of some of our cognitive functions in terms of a collection of cooperating agents. But then, I guess, what the agents themselves are made of was not clear/understood? Are today's LLM models capable of taking the form of those agents, and can we take inspiration from SoM to see how they can evolve together towards a more powerful (real/AG?) intelligence?

Seems like the fact of a large India-Egypt trade link via the red sea was known atleast a year back, and specifically this evidence from Berenike. This [0] link describes the author William Dalrymple talking about it and also about his book [1] which is already out, which presumably covers this in more detail. A lot of Indian scholars are (re)discovering Indic history and we can expect much more of ancient India specific history to come out, which was unknown or has been forgotten over the ages, given the ancient nature of the Indian civilization.

This article [0] proves that the Pāṇinian Shiva Sutras are optimal in some mathematical sense. I'm just learning to get into this, learning Sanskrit grammar, etc. and get a sense of the Asthadyaayi [1] so that I can approach it later in more detail. There are various ways to approach it and some online sites make an attempt, but as per an acquaintance who has been taught under a teacher, it [1] is almost impossible to understand without a teacher. Still, this document [2], seems to give a good understandable overview with pointers for further study.

I wonder if the technique can be flipped, by asking the student (who wishes to learn) teacher (in her role as a teacher) to 'teach' someone who actually has a more depth of knowledge and actually the teacher here (playing the role of a student). It would then be a more challenging task for both and hence provide a more direct path to learning by teaching the teacher.

That's too high if you are considering students from all over the world. Why should it be more for outside US students?

OTOH, this looks promising (though I haven't read his 2012 book which spells out the 'vision'), and would be great if this can provide a framework for a democratized online schooling system with the flexibilities and features it provides.

A question I had was whether a completely plant based diet avoid ingestion of microplastics, as most articles I see are focused on the aquatic ecosystem (probably because the density of pollution in our seas is arguably more than terrestrial). A quick google search turns up a lot of articles on the deleterious effect on plants as well, so I guess there is no escape. But perhaps (hopefully) a plant based (e.g. PBHF) diet can mitigate some of the risks imminent on a meat (mainly seafood?) based diet.

Technically the core consists of both UP (User plane) and CP (Control plane). In 4G this was MME (Mobility management entity) for CP and the S-GW and P-GW (Serving and packet gateway - which interfaces to the internet) for UP. In 5G this has been replaced with VNFs such as AMF and others for the CP and UPF (User plane function) for UP. The 5G core is truly distributed and designed from the base to have re-usable and third party VNFs with well defined (REST based) APIs so it is really a game changer.

The RAN (Radio access network) and core split is there since 2G, where the RAN in LTE is the ENB (E node B) and in 5G is the GNB (G node B).

I created /r/teamdo to enable something like this in general as I felt there is nothing existing. Perhaps there is but I am not aware. Unfortunately just creating a subreddit is not enough, there is hardly any traction.

Is there a good book which covers the historical development of quantum theory (in the 1900-1930's period) along-with the in depth technical exposition? Reading either independently does not provide the kind of engagement which can be provided with a combined exposition.

I am from India. The school I went to (70-80s) wasn't the best, but I had an innate aptitude for math (perhaps genetic). I was lucky to get introduced to some Russian math texts [1][2] from my 3rd/4th standards which helped me (alongwith some local texts) to get good scholarships and rankings in Maths and science competitions (including a national level Math olympiad) and a later admission to a top level engg college in IIT (again thanks to accessing good libraries for foreign authored books). I see the Russian books as having provided me with a good foundation by being fun and interesting, informative, affordable, immersive and engaging and it really fuelled my interest in math and science. Given the resurgence of the Russian school of math in the US I wish I could be there to educate my children in that tradition. But not being there (out of choice and circumstance, I studied in Boston for a while) I really wish something like this was available in India.

So my question is - is there some sort of a curriculum and associated training material (books, texts) available based on the Russian way of teaching, on which to develop a training plan locally in a country like India? Given the plethora of online school education options available today I do not know what exact training methods are used there, but platforms exist to have a broader reach for teachers to find interested students. I presume it would not be too difficult to setup a curriculum and training outside the normal school one with the explicit intention of developing strong math skills based on a Russian math education base if one wants to teach.

I was thinking along similar lines. A place to setup a short-term "team" of people interested in a topic, with or without a "teacher", to "study" said topic on their own - organizing, having discussions, distributing and presenting the work, sharing the learnings and disbanding. The social media platforms can be used for the organizing and coordinating parts. I am not into web-design but thought over this idea for a web-site just for publishing and discovering an interest or specific task. WOuld be something I would use if it exists. On a side note, even started a subreddit (teamdo) [0] which got zero traction (haven't advertized it anywhere) - wish it got some interest to try it out as a prototype.

Also, what, if any, are the pre-requisites of understanding them (formal methods, SAT/SMT solvers, theorem proving)?

For vim I use the CodeReviewer plugin [1] to capture comments for files. I modified it to use differently named comment files and to jump to the file locations from the comment line. I am planning to include support for hierarchical comments or referring other comment files from within one. Also the problem of tracking code changes or referring to a certain git commit is still there - in clearcase it can be easily done with a reference to the branch, but not sure how to do it in git.

What would be a good way to make this a reality with serious consequences and satisfaction for the independent researchers? What specific platforms do you suggest? I know in today's world you can get information on any topic for free, and follow the path you desire in your knowledge journey, but to do it in a organized manner (with groups of people working towards some goals) is still a challenge. I was visualizing some sort of a dynamic topic/project based community website which has enough inbuilt authentication to allow serious groups of people to congregate, co-work, plan, execute and be successful in implementing their ideas, without suffering from the drawbacks of academia (or industry)? Does such a thing exist, or does it need to be built. We can of course extend this idea (if successful) to a more sustainable ecosystem of academia and industry including financial independence.

Goes to show how a relatively small set of scientists with perhaps some crowd sourcing can achieve. We have the capability of going much further if all humanity works together on understanding our place in the universe - imagine a million people working on this (annotation, survey, search) to build a catalog even more detailed. Makes one wonder if there will ever be a shared human vision - can capitalism deliver it to us or some other political ideology like socialism has it in itself to best tackle humanities problems and explore opportunities. Will we ever reach that point where the futileness of our daily existence is overridden by greater concerns. How do we ever reach such an "ideal" ideology? Is it only through the painful process of blind discovery? Has enough been done to atleast theorize on the best option? Or will it never be possible to even theorize and come up with a solution, forget about implementation. Space provides direct evidence of the wonders of our universe, while human existence provides one about a host of lost opportunities. Perhaps we must just wait for an advanced benign alien existence to rescue us and preserve our own unique wonder of existence. Perhaps enough of us realize this fast enough not to destroy ourselves before we do that.

Two related articles I read this year: [1] is an account of a deeper analysis of this problem, [2] is AirBnB's experience with cutting off spending on online advertising during the pandemic. The conclusion is the same, but what is important is the analysis of the reasons for continuing ad funding in orgs which has more to do with the marketing executive's psychology and need for feeling important than any objective analysis of the effectiveness of the campaigns.

It was interesting to also read his previous article in "Is biology too complex to understand" [1], where he surmises that after the initial "physicsization" of the discovery process in biology, where you came up with the whole DNA, RNA, amino acids (codons), ribosome, protein and related discoveries, there is a lot of complexity left undiscovered and which may not have simplified/abstract solutions/theorems a la physics. This is exemplified with the reported 100+ articles per hour in pub med, which cannot be expected to be understood by a human (or groups of humans) to any significant extent to extend the boundaries of our understanding in a fundamental sense and the hope is that machines (ML) may help us in getting a better send of the discovery landscape and provide insights we may not be able to divine ourselves.

Which leads the the (my) question - what is the current level of development in ML theory & practice to "understand" a particular set of research articles to create a "knowledge database" which can then be used to ask questions about it or relate the consisting articles etc.I know some basic research in NLP like topic modeling, question answering, summarization, information extraction, etc. and perhaps some sort of causal reasoning can be applied, but is there enough progress in this so as to start meeting the goals he wishes for - i.e to be able to advance science by machine processing of research articles as an aid for further insights and research?
