China is already the world's largest economy by PPP. It is also #1 trade partner for many nations. On top of that it has its own processors, and is building fabs as well to compete with Taiwan and SK. It is also leading in solar panels, electric cars, trains etc. At this stage, there is little it needs from the rest of the world in terms of tech that it can't acquire.

So thinking that Chinese economy will stall similar to Japan is wishfull thinking and denial at this stage. And China's large population and huge effective territory allows it to handle both low-value and high value manufacturing. Which means that there is no pivot that someone can stop.

129MWh is a laughable amount of storage when you need at minimum 10000MWh per day for 1mln people. So you would need at least $12.5bln to build enough plants for just one day per 1mln people. And that's not counting maintenance. For that price 2-3 nuclear plants can be built which can last 30-50 years unlike the 10-20 years of lithium storage.

Instead of hideously expensive (and potentially explosive) lithium storage, solution should be synthesizing and storing some form of gas. This gas can then be produced and stored in underground locations during summer, and then spent during winter.

For example, app development - virtual machines running Android are dreadfully slow and cumbersome to use.

Also, Linux doesn't have many apps and small games. For example, if this works, Linux users can run Word and Excel, as well as Angry Birds.

You can use self-hosted web apps or a vendor that allows export of data. You can use a vendor that allows loading/saving data locally.

The same is true for most local apps. How do you know they are not leaking your data?

There are always limitations, but web apps have less, which is why they are winning.

By your definition, Linux is also insecure since it depends on closed source BIOS and closed source device firmwares, as well as closed source hardware.

Security is a process not a if/else choice, and Android is more secure than Windows because it is open source and you can replace Google parts. Good luck doing that on Windows.

With local apps there are issues of updates, security and platform lock-in. No such issues with web apps. And thanks to modern JS engines, web apps are now fast enough for most tasks.

It is perfectly possible to build a fast JS app. The one in your example is not well optimized.

It isn't, as you can disable or replace parts of Android you don't like. With Windows you are stuck with whatever Microsoft decides.

They can still do it. If they don't have resources for further development, then just ship it out of kernel as a separate patch/driver for now. That way it will still be open source and will be included in Ubuntu, Archlinux, etc.

Energy generation is not a problem, there is nuclear, sun, wind. Energy storage is. Currently, hydrogen should be a better option for energy storage as it is cheaper than the expensive and explosive lithium-ion batteries. Never mind that lithium-ion loses its capacity on every cycle and requires rare minerals.

I don't think this is a trick - especially as it states "Pay What You Want". They need money to develop the OS and apps. And asking later will result in more hate.

They should include more videos and screenshots so people have a better idea of what they are buying.

Cofeeshop people will still buy Macs, as well as those looking for status symbols. So there is no danger of Macs going away from demand side.

The issue is that Apple is alienating early adopters by removing ports, charging double for obsolete hardware and introducing gimmicks instead of real innovation. And there is a decrease in OS quality from Apple.

Photoshop CC 2015 has gold rating and should be stable with Crossover or a fixed Wine version - not too hard to setup with Playonlinux. Of course, a native version from Adobe is preferrable but that is unlikely to happen until market share is 5%.

Epiphany uses Webkit, and Gnome and Elementary are clearly emulating OSX. Also, unlike Chrome, Epiphany is well integrated with GTK3 apps - for example you can drag/drop text from Epiphany to Nautilus. And Firejail+Epiphany should be similar in terms of security.

Of course, Chrome is still better feature wise, however, Elementary or any other distribution would need Google's permission to distribute Chrome.

This works in Gnome. And if it doesn't you can just copy/paste stuff instead of dragging. In any case that's no reason to switch OS, whatever the direction.

Speak for yourself. Linux is a perfectly viable option for non-lazy people, who don't complain about everything. And Windows 10 is excellent too if you don't care about privacy. And it's Ubuntu not Ubuttnu.

You overpaid 8k for a machine so why should Apple care? You are clearly going to buy their next product.

According to Netmarketshare stats at least 2% have abandoned OSX since May 2016.

They are still selling S7/Edge by the truckloads - not to mention old versions of the S phones and Notes. And some consumers are even buying their incomprehensible A/C/J/E phones. And they are introducing S8 in March, and given lack of viable competition on high-end Android it will sell like hotcakes.

The damage will be to their stock and missed profits from Note 7 sales, as well as some loss to lawsuits. Maybe it will teach them to not rush phones or listen to engineering. Who knows, maybe they'll even add removable batteries or fix the AMOLED flicker.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. And video evidence these days when billions have a smartphone shouldn't be much to ask for.

And how do you know these people weren't violating manufacturer safety guidelines? Or that the reports are true and not rumors? Or that it is not an isolated accident?

These days if something extraordinary happens - such as a phone blowing up in the middle of the day - it is usually filmed. When it is not, then that raises questions.

Chinese suppliers on Aliexpress today require unpacking videos before claiming defective merchandise. So it isn't much to ask for some evidence before a witch-hunt.

So far there isn't any hard evidence (e.g HD videos) that the replacement phones really have the issue. All claims are based on hearsay and "reports".

But if true then Samsung really needs changes to its management and product line. It makes too many phones - right now there they have A, C, J, E lines besides the Galaxy line, confusing and aggravating customers and likely employees as well.

It can also mean that manufacturers are hitting a safety wall with lithium batteries, which is bad news for future phone battery capacities.

One issue with Samsung AMOLEDs I've noticed is the PWM effect - you can see it in any review of a Samsung phone where the phone is not on max brightness. The PWM effect can cause headache for people who are susceptible to the flicker.

They will sell the phone in BRICS and EU where consumers are more risk tolerant. Still plenty of profit. Also, I suspect US consumers will buy directly from Samsung anyway as Note 7 is still the best phablet out there.

LG phones have bootloop issues. And HTC phones are overpriced.

Grid-tie is not a magical energy storage. It's actually a headache for grid operators.

Panel prices have dropped due to competition between Chinese and German manufacturers and large scale solar power plant projects, such as the 600MW power plant in India. So subsidies to retail sector have miniscule effect on prices. Also, if the goal of subsidies was to reduce prices then it'd be better to spend them on projects to reduce panel/storage prices and investments in solar power plants.
