It rings quite true - new tools comes and gets the market because they are the new hot shot in town (like eclipse and then intellij once was). Its only matter of time before VSCode will go the same way.

As for eclipse I personally blame lack of funding and interest from new open source devs after it lost its status.

I still use it daily but with each new Eclipse release and my code base growth it really slows down to a halt sometimes and it becomes more and more frustrating. Maybe its time to switch to something that is kept alive by more than few old guys.

Wow somehow this simple observation seems to be the greatest critic of capitalism I have heard in long time. It succintly shows why this system if left alone and scaled will destroy everything with its externalities.

And for something between Ticket to ride and 18XX games you can try Age of steam - this is a lot better for when you really feel the need to build some railroads and just move stuff and not to have to learn how stock exchange works.

I used to be exactly like this - I could not visualize anything. Which was very perplexing for young me - I was astonishingly good at math (winning some country level math competitions even) but could not get past some arbitrary but somehow low level geometry problems. Then it struck me - I could not see the solutions in my head, only on paper, which drastically limited my search space.

But latley after years od doing other thing (including more artsy stuff like drawing) I discovered that I was wrong - its it possible to learn, its just that some people gets this faster and with little effort. For me it was just a other few thousend hours of doing staff that accidentally expanded my visualization ability and then "miracle" happend.

The same was with my supposed tone deafness - guess what, I only believed my self info being tone deaf (real tone deafness is very bery rare). I just was lazy in this departament (in building my ability to perceive tones).

I actually did not ask when you should use this but I guess this could just be normal engine off switch that is always used when on ground (just you should never touch it mid air) or maybe something also usefull when when you have some fire-like situation going on. The whole not use when flying as far as I remember was because it can be really hard to get the engine to work again. And the look of the switch conveyed this message really well.

Have you every been in airplane cockpit? There always is a switch that cuts enginees off and from what my pilot friend tells me using it in mid flight is more or less equal to killing everyone. And yes, as far as I remember it is big and red and have a lot of "do not touch" vibe around it.

The trailer looks a bit generic and definitely has a bit different vibe than Im used to (me not knowing French does not help at all :) ). Also the Count after transformation seems to have a different style - feels not as distinguished as old school actors in previous movies. But maybe it will be exactly what this story needs.

Any man made hardware is rather too organized to be good analogy here. But we have better alternatives than came along recently - LLMs or any kind of AI models as a matter of fact. I'm gonna take a wild guess here that you have never worked in unfamiliar domains (like lets say deep cargo shiping or subpremium loans) where your so called subject matter experts provided by client werent the sharpest people you could hope for and actually did not understand what they where doing for most of the time?

Because I on the other hand am very familiar with such projects and doing schema overhaul third time in a row for production system is bread and butter for me.

Schemaless systems is the only reason I'm still developer and not lumberjack.

From my perspective their behavior is borderline unhealthy and almost like a type of OCD but by sheer luck directed towards stuff that pays good. Especially Carmac and Romero are bad role models - their life is really good story to tell (both books reads very well) but not to live.

The real question is "is it good enough for the job"?

And if I would not have that I would be earning what 85% of my peers here in Poland do (barely enough to pay bills).

The only ones that are doing ok without this are the ones that invested everything in social skills (by happy accident of not having socially akward parents or by themselfs intuitively knowing that your group is everything).

So this is just implementation of my deepest believe that the best what we can do for our children is to make them as socially sklled as possibile. And limiting channels of communication does not look like a good way to this.

Of course Im not advocating unlimited access to everything for everyone - it depends on emotional development and predispositions.

I do not understand how anyone can be so categoric about this - it should not depend on peer pressure but also it should not be dictated by some ideologies. Phones (instant communication actually) is part of modern world and is here to stay and children should learn it as fast as they are able to handle it. Otherwise there is a danger of being left out for them. And at their age there is few other equal things that can make or break their future as being accepted by their peers. And of course not all children are the same so you need to know yours and decide on case by case basis (my dauther got her first phone when she was 9, my son on the other hand will have to wait)

Not my experience at all. I am literally at this moment releasing new version of private app framework that was created by few people (including me) about 18 year ago for few clients on long forgotten platform because some client (who is still paying support fees!) found some obscure bug building new application using this framework. The previous version was released about 8 years ago.

I partially understand sporting events if people does not know each other, but birthdays? Which country is this and what kind of people do you meet in this events? If I take my ideological glasses off for a second its kinda obvious why - invisible hand is just and "observation" dressed in lots of wishful thinking from economists. In reality it is just useful model that almost always fails if you look close enough

But on the other hand - you seems somehow not to notice that todays world is all about team work and the only way most people can test you on this is by using their intuition -so if you feel off to them they will write you off as not a cultural fit and by all means they may be right - the harsh truth is that there is not many people that want to work with people that are true to themselfs (which usually means they have all barriers and filters discarded and are at best annoying and at worst offensive)

That does not sound right. This could be partially true in old days (here in Poland during communists rule) but nowadays all public service has stated purpose that has nothing to do with employment. The real questions here is why people given opportunity to not have children jumps at it.

My personal opinion is that children are not that great - too much responsibility, too little support from society, too many of them behaves like little psychopaths most of the time (this can be probably cured with strict discipline but stress free upbringing seems to be in vogue). And the things that children "give" in return are rather questionable (especially for people with low emotional needs like me)

Most people probably like the "idea" of children but the practical side of having them is mostly boring ungrateful work that takes greater part of you life away and there is inherent risk that it can never end (I do not understand how anyone would not take into considetation the consequnce of having special needs child)

Because I go out regularly and does not have any problems with parking (uber / public trans. / choosing places with plenty of parking generalny solves this headache) , the people (you know that you can choose who you meet), prices (free meetups rules) and mediocre drinks (not drinking is an option ,but if somehow not, craft beers seems to work)

Judging from first few chapters Seldon did manage to create probabilistic model, and not a deterministic simulation (he was not sure how the interview with government representatives will go in the end). So I guess even syfy writers do not believe that it is possible to simulate reality in deterministic way.
