“Some companies offered us right off the bat up to one million, and then we got another offer that was like two million,” he says.
He and D’Angelo at first decided not to sell.
“I don’t really like putting a price-tag on the stuff I do. That’s just like not the point,” Zuckerberg says.
Really?? Is this a joke? How can a journalist even write that?
damn I need to charge my clients more.
It takes one click to clear your cookie / reset your ip.
Simple and intuitive. The UI is fast. Not much more to ask.

Great Idea. I suspect you will be do most of your marketing in NYC. I will be starting a local business startup too. I am curious to learn how you market in a big city such as NYC.
PS I added the site to http://appuseful.com/app/n/Rent-hop .
dunno how that got posted twice (see above)...my bad.
After reading some comments, I just want to give some words of encouragements.
Don't worry too much about your bloated competition such as Blackboard. I am currently a college student and I hate having having to check blackboard. I would much rather have assignment and announcements emailed to me. Most students are lazy like that too. However there are several things that schools need.
-roster page where students can email the whole class or select number of students
-discussion board
-some communication channel for parents, parents heavily invested in their child and a lot of them have zero clue of what they are learning
-A simple class page incase the student wants to login and get their assignments without their clutter of their email.
-Clear subject lines for emails that are sent out

I love the design and the font. You should definitely save the list of students emails. Have a page where it has the class roster and be able to email students individually or groups of students.
Be sure to submit it to http://AppUseful.com also!
Don't give up, tweak your idea. Also, get a job to support yourself.
That is not what she said! (go ahead vote me down)

I cannot believe why so many people are so enamored with Seth Goldin's grossly glorified common sense.
* Word spreads.
No shit. Word of mouth, that is really important. * Needs are similar.
Wow you need to pick a market with multiple customers. Brilliant!!! * Budgets exist.
Make sure your Customers have money! Don't know if you guys know this, if your customers don't have money, they cannot pay you! * Barriers exist.
Who has not heard of barriers to entry? Well IMHO, barrier to entry from the technology standpoint is not that important. There are many programmer than can make twitter, youtube, wordpress clones...etc. Execution is more crucialsure i can help with these question. Whoever interested can msg me on http://twitter.com/rebelvc.
we will ajax the featured/recent/popular so users can scroll from left to right.
We will get rid of the background hover effect. It was something we were just playing with. Will consider getting the getting rid of website title suggestion.
Ya I agree is hard to define a webapp. If the site is useful and have functionality other than just displaying images and content, we would consider it.
Our goal is to make AppUseful straightforward enough to market to the mainstream users. There are already a lot of resources that target the geek community. About half of my friends still don't know about popular sites such as Yelp.
That is definitely something we would spend a lot of time on. We are starting to see some categories that don't fit. The tag approach of go2web20 is confusing for the average users, we will add subcategories in the future. Our rating system will display the higher quality apps to the users first.
The HN community is very important to us. We would love to hear your feedback. If you are a web entrepreneur, feel free to submit and write a review promote your web app. Thanks.
Tech Bubble 2.0!
The company is valued at $625 million its rev: is $55.8m last yr and they had a net loss of $1m.
Q1 they made $366,000 in profit. Let's assume they will make $2m in profits 2009. That puts their forward P/E at 312.5X!!

Entertaining...but another example of how most TED talkers spend their time on trivial stuff. Then they go on TED and congratulate each other on how smart they are.
I would like to see more talks such as Bill G's on solving the world's biggest problem such as education and malaria.
If you already know PHP then go with Codeigniter MVC framework. It runs fast, very straightfoward, and the documentation is superb.
I been conflicted about whether to pursue Buddhism. Its ideals of not wanting too much makes a lot of sense. However, civilization thrives and life expectancy increase because we work towards our ambitions and wants.
Another reason is that I admire Zen Buddhist practitioners Steve Jobs and Phil Jackson (zen master). Ironically, take Steve Jobs for example, his demanding and often angry management style is the opposite of Zen teaching.
I love to hear yalls opinion on how great achievement and Buddhism can co-exist.
Not necessarily true. Asians eat tons more than Americans. their meal portions are at least 40% more and full of carbs (rice). However, Asian meals are have more nutrients, often mixed in with a lot of vegetables. Compare that to slabs of meat and potatoes that Americans like to consume.
The UI and Design of LinkedIn is horrible. I really don't enjoy using LinkedIn. I wish someone has the balls to compete with them. I would if I was interested in professional networking but i'm not. I haven't used XING but hopefully its better than LinkedIn.
Startup CEOS are forced to learn to be proficient in numerous areas. The 80/20 rules applies well startup CEOS. They don't have to spend years in school in a specific subject to have great use of it. There is no a way a person can be an expert in programming, design, finance, marketing, and so on. However being an expert doesn't mean you have utilized your knowledge in the most useful ways possible.
Good startup CEOs are able to recognize what is worth learning and how to tie different aspect of his knowledge together. I would be willing to take advice in may areas from a good Entrepreneur.
This is why take advice from PG on everything from how to be a great programmer, entrepreneur, angel investor, and much more.
You did a good job communicating what this app does. Add to the front page, "Why do people need this?"
Does anyone know if using a xss_clean function such as the one in PHP would be a problem for user passwords?
Many people like to use special char for password not sure that will conflict with xss_clean. Thanks!
