I don't get anything out of having sex with women I don't like and I generally don't find women to be likeable. Just like most guys I have been looking for love in my 20s just to find out that no such thing exists beyond a mother's love for her children. I look above average and dress above average these days and get a fair amount of unwanted female attention as they apparently love my facial expression of seething contempt for most people.

I have been to Japan and the society is fairly autistic. People are polite but want to stay in their own little bubble. You could collapse on the street in Tokyo and nobody would give a shit if you don't block the entrance of a business. In the outskirts of Tokyo people live in bleak housing blocks that already look depressing from far away that make modern condos look like masterpieces.

The society is super hierarchical, with old people being on top and young people earning almost nothing, jobs being hard to come by, guys not getting girlfriends / wifes cause strong independent women don't need no man and socializing with random people outside the internet is highly uncommon as well.

If I was in Japan I would be a recluse as well.

I don't know about the US, but in Europe it was always marked as expenses refunded to me on the payslip, which is tax free.

I used to work as at Google and it was my worst job ever.

It was not for Google directly though, but via a temp agency for a Google project.

Google rented an office building just for the project with temp agency HR on site and a few Googlers that were mostly in management and supervising things.

Contracts were structured in a way to avoid having to pay benefits and to be able to maximize pressure on the the employee with extremely short notice periods.

The turnover was enormous, almost everyone hated working there and 30-40% of the employees were reminded weekly by HR that they're on probation and will get fired if their performance isn't better next week.

Basically a modern day sweatshop.

That's just common sense. If you pay the same salary that some outsourcer pays you're looking at a high turnover that will be more of a headache and cost factor than 3-4k extra a year above the average wage for someone in customer support for example (which is a tiny amount compared to engineer salaries anyway).

I don't know about Munchery and will give them the benefit of a doubt, but usually companies that offer full benefits for 30+ hours (don't they legally have to do this anyway in SF?), they just cut anyone off at 29 hours.

Also the "taken together" "wage" is highly misleading if it includes costs of gas and all the other expenses that one has to pay for a car, in a city where one doesn't even necessarily have to own one.

Basically the whole story is about common sense, as min wage or slightly above contractors obviously don't tend to be very loyal or excited about their work beyond lip service, as pretty much anyone doesn't see this as a long term situation and will just switch to the next best thing whenever possible.

Employment contracts on the other hand come with notice periods, non compete etc. that will make switching jobs a lot more of a hassle and make anyone think twice if they really want to do it.

Secondly the entry requirements to study law are really high (if you're German, you'd need to be a straight A student, not sure about foreigners).

If you aren't eating instant noodles all day, there's also no way you'll survive on the grocery budget.

A realistic food budget is 300EUR a month, even if you don't eat out.

Memorize the 2000 or so most common words via spaced repetition with Anki or Super Memo using pictures.

Learn the grammar.

Start reading simple books / websites about stuff that interests you, accompanied with a dictionary website, as you'll need to look up a shitload of words.

Once you can read well enough, interact with people via forums or web chats in the language, which will improve your skills further.

If you want to sound like a native you'll need lots of speaking practice until your brain adapts.

Some people will sound like Arnold Schwarzenegger for life though.

I'm living in a developing country and I'm glad online grocery delivery exists.

The nearest supermarket is 30min walk away, taking a cab would cost money and time too (I don't have a car) and the nearer wet market (about 15min walk away) is just a huge mess with everybody looking unhappy, prices needing haggling and quality being much lower.

My quality of living has gone up a lot since then and I'm saving a lot of time as well.

You can demand all you want, but if there are no unions or legislations to back your demands, nothing is ever going to happen.

Unions, which are most widely found in western Europe accomplish little these days (the negotiated wages for call center workers are barely livable for example).

If you're a skilled developer, you can work your way to freelancer / self employed consultant or join one of the companies that offers part time work / 4 day work week (there was a recent article about one in Portland that only does 4 day work weeks).

If you're unskilled, you'll always be fucked to varying degrees, as such is life unfortunately.

Also it's hard to take an article seriously when it cites Marx, whose theories obviously don't work in the real world, as humans are competitive to varying degrees by nature.

It's kinda weird to suck up to Apple by claiming it's a great strategy upfront without there being any proven sales success.

I don't think there is much of a demand for smart watches and the luxury edition will make many people think if they want to support a company that offers outrageously priced products along with normal priced products, as both hipsters that can easily afford apple products and wealthy people might not vibe with a dual strategy like this.

20k is barely liveable in London and if you get laid off before you make significantly more, then you'll have a serious problem if you don't qualify for welfare yet. 30k is already on the high end. In SF, which has similar rents, entry level devs mostly make 70-80k USD, with 60k being rock bottom.

I'm exaggerating of course, but dropouts don't tend to do well in Germany. You either fit in or get pushed out. I suppose Zuckerberg and the like would mainly end up as some no name devs in some company, if they were to adapt to the system.

Backwards in terms of largely using outdated technologies, requiring you to send a printed CV with your picture (slowly changing now), very formal hiring process, unwilling to hire anyone without a matching degree rand certifications regardless of skills, largely unrealistic expectations regarding work experience and skills (requirering 5 years of iPhone dev experience when it was just out for a year was common), in larger companies a PhD is needed to get promoted above certain positions etc. etc.

Europe truely is the "old world", with London being the only place where startups have a somewhat realistic chance of getting funded on reasonable terms, however entry level developer salaries are still poverty level in London for the first 3 years or so, as there are more candidates than jobs, unlike in the US.

The best and brightest in the US would probably be suicidal welfare candidates in Germany, but enough whining from me for now, as I have been to enough third world countries to know that it can always be worse...

Everybody wants to work for big companies like Siemens, so they filter people out via school grades (people that hate the educational system usually have bad grades) and inane logical thinking tests that go on for hours.

If you don't fit in, you're pretty much on your way to permanent welfare or min wage jobs in Germany unless you emigrate like I did.

German companies are totally backwards compared to US companies and usually managed in rather totalitarian ways.

This might work for someone who does not mind this or who has a place to stay while earning less than 1k USD a month for years, but it certainly did not work for me and I choose min wage jobs and self learning instead. Self learners are considered unemployable in Germany, but it gets one a fair chance in the UK or Ireland.

Switzerland is a tiny country with most companies being service companies that cater to foreign customers just like in Singapore. Larger countries cannot function on that kind of taxation. The cantons can individually negotiate taxes btw. so there is little need for intricate avoidance schemes.

I'd argue Japan is a good example of a larger well functioning country with fair taxation (up to 40% on income above 150k USD).
