I've been relatively happy with Headscale, but now that I have MacOS/iOS users I'm in the process of testing alternatives like Netbird. I was also surprised that the Tailscale Kubernetes operator is not compatible with Headscale.

Yes, we are doing that. These tools help make my personal projects come to life, and the money is well worth it. I can hit Claude Code limits within an hour, and there's no way I'm giving OpenAI my money.

I'm so used to installing via F-Droid or straight APKs, installing something using the Play store feels weird and hack-y. If anyone's doing the "side loading" I think it's Google :P

I would love to learn more about how to set something like this up. I hope this group will consider open-sourcing more tools and instructions for others who hope to follow in their footsteps.

As some other commenters have said, Headscale/Tailscale scratches some of this itch for me. Having individual devices connect directly to an overlay network is fabulous. However, I can never fully control Tailscale the way I wish to, and connecting networks together with it is difficult.

Headscale is great (I use it) but it is an alternative to the Tailscale control server, not the client applications. Some of those are closed source, and their compatibility with Headscale is not guaranteed.

Genuine question, how could a well-formed HTTP request for a URL ever be considered unauthorized access? If I request something and someone responds...shouldn't it be their responsibility not to share important information?

A passport card is valid for all domestic flights, as well as land travel to Canada and Mexico. I prefer it to my passport book when appropriate as it's sturdier and easier to carry.

It's also nice on international trips as proof of U.S. citizenship (though you'll usually need your book at border crossings)
