Certainly there are companies that pay remote lower salaries but this isn't always true. Some companies want the best talent and know one of the best ways to make that happen is to not try to under pay any employee that you can find a reason to under pay.

I also disagree that you're competing, at least directly, with someone from the countries you listed. Depends on where you are and who you are, but as a remote employee I'm still working from the same timezone I was working from when I was in the office, it's very cheap to fly me onsite as I'm next to a major airport, and am a native English speaker. Hiring someone who wants to work from their home in the US isn't immediately the equivalent of hiring someone from another country with possible timezone, visa and language barriers.

I'm not really a fan of the term because it covers a huge variety of people and the most vocal ones are working here and there and largely just prioritizing the idealized "digital nomad life".

Then there are people, like you said, who are renting apartments for weeks/months, prioritizing quiet work spaces, and often continuing to hold full time jobs.

I'm kind of in this category right now and am certainly never working from the beach. I went to Latin America so I could find apartments with good internet and continue to work in the same timezone that I started out in.

Answering as a current employee. When these were being phased out to start to lower costs students and graduates reacted strongly that they felt they were a large part of our value. Part of what makes us "us". As another commenter in here pointed out: bootcamps aren't for everyone.

We were up front about these things being part of our program because we want to focus on the human aspects of people as much as technical skills. That meant some people were better suited to join other places, but some people came specifically because of this part of it.

Personally I think such a dilema means it is time to find new friends.

A bigger processor and more memory isn't something that most users are concerned with. The important thing that people will see on a phone like this is that it's enormous (4.6" vs 3.5") and the huge impact this (as well as the processor) will have on battery life. Android already has a reputation for terrible battery life.

I like that these AI Challenges appeal to everyone and rope in large numbers by the reward factor of watching your code fight someone else's to the death.

You're right, though, it's definitely not about writing intelligent software. That type of competition would have a much smaller but probably more intensely academic.

The concern is coming because Mozilla announced that they will soon stop supporting Firefox 4 and the enterprise has a problem with this.

Personally, I'm fully supportive of this. I feel that as the browser world is rapidly changing along with HTML5/CSS3, there's not much room to continue supporting (and thus encouraging continued use of) old browser versions.

If gaining support of the corporate world (which Mozilla has never had much luck getting into) means leaving developers, support and security resources working on old products this really isn't surprising.

I think something like this really needs a rating or comment system. Would be nice to see what people thought of the code used in the scaffold you were downloading rather than having to create a scaffold and review it on your own. As the number of scaffolds grows, it would be hard to sort between clean, popular ones and ugly ones.

Rails for Zombies was very well done, but not too long into it I found myself going straight to the end, looking at what I needed to do and then clicking through the video to find to the parts where he actually got to the guts of what it was about and how to do it.

Overall it's a neat idea and the guys at EnvyLabs are great but I couldn't see myself paying for more.

No I believe you're right on this (though I'm not a particularly heavy HN user). Upvoting things you agree with implies that you should downvote things you don't agree with and that really isn't appropriate.

I turned this on and a ton of my auto archived mail started showing up in my inbox. Seems cool though but I immediately turned it off.

I can definitely see this side of the complaints. The side I was arguing against was everyone's outrage that you couldn't just use Friday to moonlight.

I think it's funny a lot of comments are saying they would be angry about not being able to work on that Friday. I'm not particularly sure why you would be upset if your employer offered to pay you 40 hr/week salary and only expected you to work ~32 hours.

They place value in that day assuming you will use it to rest. Working on it would be counter productive to what they see it being useful for.
