I have experience doing this and am happy to talk offline as this is a complicated situation - just shoot me an email and I'll make time.

You will need to create organizational accountability for the integration and define what success looks like and how it will be measured. You will also want to avoid an "us vs them" situation inside the two companies.

There are a ton of subtleties in how to do that above that vary with organizational dynamics, but you must ensure that at a senior level you have alignment from both organizations or there will be a lot of shared misery.

I found it to be well written and interesting when I was a university student first going deep on the subject.

The Design and Implementation of the FreeBSD Operating System (2nd Edition) by McKusick is also well written and covers some of the same ground.

At Ness we're building a personalized search engine which combines personal data about an individual along with signals from their social graph and delivers uniquely tailored results for each query. Our first product focuses on restaurants and has been featured in the App Store since our launch 8 weeks ago.

Behind the scenes we're combining collaborative filtering and other forms of machine learning with traditional information retrieval to predict what users will like, explain our prediction to users, and rank what they will want to do in the moment.

Doing all this requires well architected, scalable systems for pushing lots of data and answering queries with minimal latency.

It looks interesting, but not ready for prime time. Anyone using this in the wild?

I really feel for smaller companies here as I know people with great products who have been trolled out of existence.

I wonder if there is a non-legislative fix available because I've heard about programmers wanting patent reform for as long as I've been programming and I believe almost no substantial progress has been made.

Brad mentions that larger companies have more resources available for fighting patent trolls. What if VCs set aside a pool of capital for defending their investments from patent trolls as part of raising their funds?

The idea would be to create a pool money whose size would ward off patent trolls. I'm sure it would take a few victories in court, but it could establish a precedent and change the game.

It certainly seems easier than attempting to reform patents.

Their layout is pretty busted on Safari :(

They use flash for display and XMPP polling with ejabberd on the backend. I can understand some of the motivation for this now, but I wonder how much will be obviated by HTML 5 with server-sent events and Web sockets. I guess it will depend on how quickly those things make it into IE.

It seems like this is really "enterprise collaboration" done right. Think of how many places installed lotus notes or ms exchange to get some of these features.

Sprinkle in some calendaring and todo robots and you have an extremely powerful collaboration tool. Add in search and you have a new way to manage ad-hoc information.

It will be interesting to see how they come up with efficient representations when these document trees get to be large.

One downside of wave is that I haven't seen anything about how to stop spam. That was a major problem for email, and is becoming a problem on twitter too. Throw in differing social contexts like proper distribution of tweets for spymaster and you have some thorny social issues.
