I think there can be routing policy rules in place if a request came in asking for 700mbit/s for example the balancing would kick in providing that bandwidth. And tbh there is very likely going to routing balancing rules anyway even if I don’t know the nature of OPs business since he mentions bandwidth here.

Exactly! Most people now just text me if they want to know about me. I realised so many of these ‘friends’ only cared enough to like pictures or make a comment on them. Beyond that they weren’t interested. It’s better to not have such friends than have them as you are getting a false sense of friendship not a real one. I can’t believe people don’t see this problem yet. Not to mention the fact that if I actually meet them maybe by coincidence for example, they have nothing to talk about themselves but still have a profile full of photos. I already know a few people who have completely lost it due to Facebook and Instagram. I hope the damage isn’t beyond repair. This is a very serious problem in my opinion. I don’t think everyone is addicted but I think most of them are and it’s not good.

I deleted FB 2 years ago, Twitter 2.5 years ago and Instagram 1 year ago.

Most close friends found zero problems connecting with me. That’s cause they call, text or we just meet. It’s almost like I started to live in the ‘real’ life rather than a made up one. It felt weird and underwhelming at times but it is horrifying how much we can get sucked into social media without even knowing most of the times. The withdrawal symptoms can be real too.

Seriously just go and click the delete button right now after seeing this post. Don’t think just do it.

What I find common on such threads is Linux users bashing how Apple users are suckers. I don't get the point of such comments. Most people on HN can already figure out how to build their own PC, install and configure the distro of their choice. But thats not even relevant as everyone is pointing out the flaws in software so that the company responsible will fix them. Bragging about Linux makes no sense, many of us using Macs here most likely already have a linux box as well.

I find C++ and Rust hard to grasp quickly. I like Go since I come from C but I haven’t looked at any frondtend in Go. I would say some kind of Rust + Go mashup with some kind of good frontend framework (especially something that translates for mobile devices) could do the trick. But I find that every time I interview for a company the tech stack is always a different combination and a learning curve for newcomers.

Okay so let me be clear what I meant in the first line. I meant MBP users only wanted the ports to be fixed and keyboard since 2016. Getting the M chips that are this goods was a lottery winner for macOS users. I am saying this in a positive tone not negative (though I could have worded it wrong).

The second part is where I say that even if Apple has worked on ARM chips for their phones for quite some time tuning it, macs are still significant product and even if the chips are in house its still a gamble to completely shift a product from what was basically an x86 monopoly. What I meant is that the way Apple pulled it off is rare in the business.

I feel like the only complaint of the 2016 MBP was keyboard and ports. The M chips are literally a lottery at this point. Apple making their own chips is probably a rare thing in any business where the maker of a product eventually makes the most complicated part of the product themselves from scratch which only a handful of other people in the industry have managed in 2 decades. Yes iPhone chips were designed by Apple for quite some time but a general purpose computer is a lot more different than a heavily controlled App Store only device.

So basically apple just went back to the things they tried to fix that weren't broken and then messed up the aesthetics by making it a design from 2010 and added a notch. Why do they do this. Does the design team not understand how to design macbook pros ?

Apple is getting into VPN now and if I was to guess they would integrate it with some kind of hardware block in their silicon to make it seamless and transparent. I wonder if Wireguard is at the point where silicon makers can actually consider a hardware block such that the VPN is completely transparent to the cores. Personally I find it better to have individual devices do the VPN than at the central network of my home as I find that these mobile devices are significantly more powerful and efficient to do it.

Its funny how Windows and Android, the two most widely used operating systems, are a privacy nightmare and basically spyware at this point. Remember you can install tools and ROMs that are privacy focussed but also realise only a minor percentage of the users bother or are aware of these.

I wonder what the sales pitch would be to sell privacy focussed products to the average Joe.

I think it means ‘user-friendly’ cheap which is different than cheap. I don’t see gnome to be user friendly much and don’t even get me started on windows on mobile. iPadOS on the other hand is something 2 year olds or someone who has never used a computer can get used to in hours.

The most fascinating physics nobel prize for me in recent times was for gravitational wave detection using LIGO. I spent days learning and watching videos of the three of them. The ingenuity of the detector is fascinating and the fact that every year they simply got closer but ‘not there yet’ and the fact that it took more than two decades says that the goal was probably secondary but they enjoyed the journey far more. Of course they would have hoped to see the waves be detected in their lifetime but for Kip Thorne it was 50 years from the start. Most of the stories behind Nobel prize winners are mind boggling.

I really hate the path Apple is taking. They make excellent products, really the average Joe simply loves Apple products. But they need to stop acting anti-consumer and anti-developer to “protect” their IP. At this point they could release the schematics of iPhone 13 and still people will buy Apple’s iPhone than someone who copied them. Rant over.

So here is how I see it for these big tech companies(I know it’s terrible but I believe that’s just how it is sadly).

Medical professionals have malpractice insurance / budget where if a doctor was to make a mistake and was sued for it then it is used to settle. Similarly companies like Apple seem to feel like they keep doing what is right for their own personal interests and profits while at the same time set aside money to settle such cases and see it as collateral damage. Even if you were to get a tough judge in a case like this you’d still as Apple at best get a slap on the wrist with a few hundred thousand or a million in fines to some individual developer. The only difference between medical professionals and big tech is that once a medical professionals licence is pulled he can’t practice medicine again. I wonder what similar punishment big tech should get for pulling such stunts.

If intel doesn't consider ARM for its client devices (like Laptops) then their market is going to further erode by QC/Nuvia as selling a 300-500$ CPU is going to be a great market for QC to enter. Intel has already lost a considerable share to AMD and they might lose that further to QC because I just don't see an intel laptop offering ridiculous battery life and TDP like the M1 which QC can achieve in a couple of years hopefully. At this point I feel like intel is just being adamant which is not good for both business and customers because in the linux and Open-source space people would much rather prefer an Intel/AMD platform than QC.

On a small mobile it’s worse because then I have to basically avoid tapping any ads and thats much harder than using a mouse on a computer.

I have little understanding of this but someone who actually works on vaccines told me this theory: Your body upon coming in contact with the vaccine starts to product antibodies (the first shot). This is generally enough for a normal immune system to fight the disease if in the future the body was to come in contact with the virus. The second shot is for hyper immunity after 4 weeks. What it does is that it basically tells your body make a lot more antibodies now and the second shot is actually a booster shot. So every time you take a shot afterwards (like in the middle of a pandemic) your body produces an abundance of antibodies and will likely fend off the virus much more easily than if there was no booster dose of any kind and just a vaccine shot. This is important because simply protecting your body from the virus is not enough since you could be carrying the virus and spreading it with mild infection which will not be a problem for you but will not protect others and so the hyperimmunity is important for preventing spread during a wave. I won’t be surprised if this one is a yearly dose as you need to be hyperimmune to not show symptoms and spread.

‘Beats’ ‘benchmark’ ‘nm’ are all marketing terms. You can only do so much comparison using such numbers but what you miss completely is that we are not putting them in a server farm. x86 is still coming as a CPU offering while the M1 and ARM chips are SOCs. It reduces system power as far less separate chips are needed to do other stuff while simultaneously being much more performant. A 5850U miniPC uses a 65w power brick. An M1 mini sips at best 39W. You would have to compare 1.65xM1 with 1x5850U

With ARM, the lack of control might deteriorate even further. While the underlying architecture might not have much to do with it, the accelerators in these SOCs just give more options for Microsoft to collect data and lock down devices even further.

This reminds me of Windows 10 itself. A fresh install of windows 10 has all its builtin apps including the calculator (for currency I am guessing) allowed through the firewall by default. In the security world, the default should be off and only upon request should an app allowed to talk over the network. Not to mention the fact that apps like Facebook messenger are installed by default in Windows. Microsoft can sell me their operating system in a minute if they just stop all the stupid telemetry, remove the bloat and by default turn all privacy and security options to on and not off. It's not a bad operating system for most people, it's just a privacy nightmare that Microsoft seems to be fine with somehow. Because no matter what your privacy 'policy' is, the best policy is to not collect any data at all.
