Lenses are type-safe, so if you care about type-safety then object/json paths are not really a feasible option. Regarding the boilerplate in this post, that is mainly a side-effect of demonstrating how lenses work. If you use a library like monocle-ts the boilerplate is reduced drastically (see: https://github.com/gcanti/monocle-ts).

Yes this quote got me cringing, these things are definitely not 'simple'. The post's title is also presumptuous. While Haskell is a brilliantly elegant language, by capturing abstractions at a high level (i.e. category theory). This is also it's fallacy, these abstraction are inherently hard to understand because, well, they are so abstract. When writing most software in the real world we need to be pragmatic to be able to recruit people to actually write that software. So will Haskell take over all software engineering, I don't think so. Fortunately we can, and are already learning a lot from ideas introduced by Haskell.

There are editors that allow you to edit the abstract syntax tree (AST) directly. An AST is the parsed representation of your code without information about its presentation (e.g. spaces or tabs). Code can be presented in different formats for each programmer, since the formatting is part of the presentation but not the storage. The downside of these editors is that it looks like you are editing text, but actually the text doesn't really exist in memory, since the text is just a projection. Such editors are called 'projectional' editors, JetBrains has an implementation called MPS.

The idea behind svelte is neat, i wonder though what the impact of its approach will be on a developers ability to understand what is happening under the hood. In my experience opaque abstraction layers can really hamper your ability to properly understand what is going on. Traditionally the JS ecosystem has been a frontrunner in this area (e.g. sourcemaps). But I have had terrible experiences in the Java ecosystem, with all its aspect weaving and annotation magic.

It is interesting to see the package management approach Deno (Ryan Dahl’s new project) is taking. It has stated as an explicit goal to make the package manager part of the same deno runtime. It tries to achieve this by supporting a native webstandard for modules out of the box. The approach seems to be partially inspired by the go 1.14 module system.

The accessibility of the ecosystem is just not good enough for more junior engineers. This used to be a real strong suit of web development, but it has degraded over the years. My believe is that ES modules could reverse the trend, and simplify web development.

ES modules could also bring sanity to dependency management within the ecosystem. It is interesting to see the approach Deno JS is taking here as well.

This is very good development for frontend development. Build systems like webpack were useful technology in earlier days. But they are presenting a big hurdle for newer less experienced developers to enter the frontend development space today. I would love to see a future where we can again run a webserver from a folder to serve a frontend in development.

I do wonder how modular css fits into the picture of es modules though.

In my opinion many of these issues with Kubernetes arise because it is not the right abstraction for application developers. You are forced to think about too many low level details to get a stable application running.

Many companies forget that they are incharge of getting way more intricate details of the application runtime right when they shift their application to Kubernetes.

In some of my recent experience I have seen a company shift an application from app engine to Kubernetes. However they forgot that appengine is using an optimized jvm to run your application. When they deployed to Kubernetes their app grinded to a halt. They forgot about all the observability that comes out of the box in app engine, thus resulting in an unobservable badly performing application.

Hopefully more domain specific runtimes build on top of Kubernetes can help application developers deploy to a kubernetes cluster in a sane way. I am putting some of my money on knative, however it is still quite hard to convince clients to invest in this area.

Recently I have been more invested in the Jetbrains ecosystem then ever before. Intellij has become a tool that is so full fledged it can replace almost all my other development tools. It can run and compile all things JVM. It is able to compile, refactor, and typecheck TypeScript. It can run my test suites. I can use it to browse any database tables, and the list goes on. At the same time I also see the popularity of Kotlin picking up, which will help Jetbrains push their IDE products in the future.

Isn’t the founder from the Netherlands? I’m fairly sure they also have a small office in Amsterdam, but most of their engineering is done by people working remotely.

Wholeheartedly agree that cryptocurrencies haven't found a good (legitimate) use in the past 10 years. However 10 years is a short period especially in fields that grow exponentially overtime. I feel the real use cases and technological advances in the cryptocurrency field are just starting to take of. We see all kinds of domain specific applications popping up (e.g. IOTA which tries to solve problems in the domain of machine-to-machine economy). I hope cryptocurrencies will be the backbone of the fight against a centralized/walled-garden internet and will help us decentralizing the internet in the next 10/20/30 years.

Also the code should just use math.Pi. There are not that many use-cases I can come up with that you would want to use anything different. So I do agree that it is a terrible example.
