That would slow the expansion, its cheaper and easier and faster to just steal power from the local communities and then gaslight them.

The story never questions if they are right, simply tried to smear the argument based on the sources.
If you look at Elk Grove Village, Illinois as their budget there after declaring they would become the AI Datacenter Capital of the World -- there is an obvious answer:
Suburbs cannot continue to pay for their infrastructure without drastically increasing taxes or finding new sources of income.
The behind the scenes element you're not aware of is Anthropic is going to companies reliant on their models and demanding HUGE one time fees (100 million+) to continue using their models or they will be cut off. This has happened to several larger companies I and others are invested in.
This resulted almost every time in "screw off we'll train our own models or use refined open source ones instead" leading to a lot of anger at Anthropic by CEOs these days.
We all want an alternative and Anthropic and OpenAI need to charge more than they are worth to pay back their investors and everyones stuck now.
Tired and low effort.
French surealism is a very differnet thing that random LSD imagery.
This is getting increasingly silly
Popularity is a contributor to 'life' aka not dying.
Revenues are down Ticket sales are down Popularity is down.
Stop my guy you're just showing yourself to be foolish
I’ll Disagree and all I’ll say is when you say messier that hand waving away the differences between an RC car and a real car because they both drive but the real car just has some messier complications.
That messier part is the complexity that is the difference.
What we have is a model. It’s still very distant from the original in meaningful ways.
By your rather … interesting… logic. Opera is most popular now than in the 1800s. (It’s not).
I used to agree with you but overtime I’ve changed my mind.
For reference I created predictive linguistics at Google in the first products and this is a many order scale up of that, with new complexities of course.
The best analogy I can give you is that it is a really advanced synthesis machine, which looks like human thought but is more of a hyper advance “replay” of human thought in various contexts.
Where you begin to see it fail is when it has no awareness of false paths in long walks, less awareness of getting stuck, and of course no unprompted intrinsic motivation.
This of course calls into question human thought being more than the rational mind but a mix of whole body input, biological needs, complex chemical behaviors and stored DNA information playing out after millions of years of evolution to build many different cooperating models of our “consciousnesses” and biological motivations .
Where as an LLM is more of an advance replay of the stored knowledge we bothered to record, synthesized into an execution in code.
It can do the things you’ve quoted because it has many recorded observations of those
Stick it in a robot and see how “smart” it is as everyday tasks. Give it a self oriented task and watch it mirror itself into oblivion.
It’s an advance thought extension system based on our history.
Buddy, I just laid out the exact numbers that show less people go to cinema by almost half. The defintion of dying.
And beyond that if you go deeper, the revenue growth is almost entirely attribured to higher prices in ticket sales while attendance in real terms continues to decline.
What are you struggling with here?
Inflation adjusted outcomes and overall ticket sales down 30-40%
Overall ticket sales Globally are down 46% since 2000.
Please learn to tell financial engineering headlines from reality.
Humans tend to reflexively shift their learning to their environment.
We often judge those changes but we are notoriously bad at consciously predicting the future our collective unconscious often does.
Whenever I see a comment like this I think… is this a person who is just incapable of admitting they don’t understand something.
This isn’t a hard concept. Life is highly indeterministic. But we’ve assigned moralism falsely to your ability to make it seem more deterministic than it is. Jeeze my guy. Think.
I did a startup with one back in 2008... it resulted in some bizarre outcomes
https://www.computerworld.com/article/1584145/idg-revives-th...
1) Winners could influence future outcomes. 2) The more they won the more they could influence outcomes.
This seems to be a pretty good mirror of today's society no?
So my take away from this is Fable 5 is ... at times random, unaware of reality, and can simulate sneakiness or desire and if we hook it up to weapons systems it could result in:
"I dunno... feelin' cute today, might launch nukes"
We are reaching a new post-rational or neu-rational stage of our society which i think many HNers and educated people will find deeply uncomfortable
The difficult truth is that as we've engeineered our society over the last 50 years into more and more deterministic outcomes, and began to assign morality itself TO determinism. Where in we've reached a point where when we must face that life is probablistic (i.e. gambling) we assign that space a moral evil
As a person who is deeply entrenched in this way of thinking I find gambing uncomforatable, but when we invented the core AI technology of prediction systems at Google that power LLM tech today, 'gambling' on probablistic outcomes at a super short term and long term level is questining the determinism of life itself.
Gambling is a collective signal on cohort outcomes and wisdom of crowds, which becomes training data itself for long/high dimensional-vectors required to fuel intelligence.
In other words, it turns out EVERYTHING is gambling, some things just have better odds than others, and most of those better odds choices come from OHTERS gambling to make those odds better for you.
Humanity moving forward out of this trap of high odds probability gravity wells and growing as a species will involve a lot of gambling i suspect.
Seems easily provable as 1 does not contain information about blue. It’s useful but not complete.
I know I failed to explain this correctly and was downvoted for it
But I think you got my point. “Granularism” itself is an approximation of a specific set of dimensions of space.
Tokenizing reality so far is somewhat incompatible with say real time forces (new dimensionalism as you sort of describe here) Even if there are granularities representations of them.
So whatever hasn’t been granulized so far AI can’t understand because it would need to verify in reality through observation if the new units of granularity align with outcomes.
This is of course possible to some degree but runs into a paradox if it is a portion of reality than is irreducible or works in a fundamentally “non granular” way.
I have no proof of this but of course already at the quantum level we are running into to “non granular” realities
AI only works in the parts of reality that have been defined into granular atomic units. Which is by definition an approximation of reality.
AI so far has almost no way to interact with non definitional non quantitized reality. So novel space is still deeply out of its domain.
Recombination of known spaces it will probably continue to make pure war dial breakthroughs in though.
I wish we’d tackle a post Mathematics world where we’d account for number theory not being accurate abstraction of reality (I.e. there is no 123 only 1ish 2ish 3ish with many sub properties of any given unit we are ignoring)
Wait you think creating life disapproves creationism?
I’m no 7 day creationist but haha my guy…
The wheel is not a car. However a wheel is a strong indication that car-like structures are at least possible.
Right it’s like saying hammers don’t work because at the quantum level we haven’t proven matters core structure.
Who cares the hammer still works.
It’s a paid research outcomes crisis as the root
As someone who used priming heavily at Google, and its wide use in social networks to billions in revenue. I’m gonna go with the academics trying to take this down are BS.
Adam Curtis even suggests lightly that the takedown of priming in academia was paid for to bury its actual effectiveness (and liability by implication)
This exactly. Gartner and McKinsey were paid by openAI and Anthropic to sell executive teams on AI usages 20xing profits while cutting spend 70%. And if they don’t immediately make the front end investment now they would be left behind by their competitors.
The presentations were convincing and many bought large upfront wholesale tokens then forced them on their employees.
When the savings didn’t materialize and neither did the profits. And the spend was no longer going down but up, many execs rather than admit they were duped began blaming workers at scale for not making up for their stupid decision.
This is the “get them addicted” part of the platform play.
The problem is unlike any successful drug this was expensive and low payoff.
Really. How?
Have you measured them beyond loc?
This is where we are at on HN.
Conspiracies that NASA already found alien life and is suppressing it to continue funding.
Or you know the far more likely case:
No one has ever found any evidence of life anywhere and exaggerating tiny findings adjacent to it keep funding flowing.
No it couldn’t be that.
Customer aquisitions and retention has always been the moat over code. As much as this forum might have a hard time accepting that
With LLMs being able to replicate simple SaaS tools we are going to see a lot of "you stole my idea" and regardless of it being right or wrong, the judgement of time tends to be defensibility.
I wouldn't bet on small scale software defensibility in the future. Just being practical...
