BLS forward looking guidance means nothing when technology revolutionizes the nature of work.

Being raised on welfare and paying for college on my own, I hated the post-grad interview cycle because it seemed so asinine. Almost 20 years later, I’m somewhat better at knowing how to answer these questions, but I can’t help but to acknowledge the cynical side of these questions in finding surreptitious ways (either intentionally or unintentionally) discriminate against low-income candidates.

I’ve been thinking a lot about a similar concept, but orthogonal application of that concept: when immediate/short-term incentives are not there, how do you reward workers in the trenches (scientists and engineers in this case) to push forward and make the best decision for science, even if it’s not the best decision for the business/entity?

idk… I for one like the fact that Gmail sucks at search to be honest because I (naively?) believe they don’t profile everything in your inbox. For example, if I subscribe to a newsletter about “healthy lifestyle,” it won’t return that newsletter, but return string matches where “healthy” or “home” are relevant. If they profiled the emails for contextual awareness to know what I meant by “healthy living,” I’d be concerned.

I just tried reading the documentation and I have no idea what I’m supposed to do. I have a bunch of keyboards that won’t let me use the F keys as standard f keys (only lets me use them as multimedia keys) unless I hold the keyboards fn key. Karabiner is set to “use f keys as standard f keys” and it still doesn’t work. Anyone know how I might use kanata to use F1, F2…etc without holding the keyboards fn key?

Isn’t Deepseek’s advantage that they didn’t actually start from scratch and that embeddings & training was already supplied? To say that Deepseek is comparable in performance to OpenAI is like saying Kirkland brands is comparable to {insert non white labeled good here}- they’re created off the same inputs. To say that Deepseek is a threat to AI supremacy is hyperbolic. As long as OpenAI innovates at the rate that it’s been innovating, their value is undeniable. Sure, Deepseek may tick after OpenAI’s tock, but the premium is in that tock.

He states numerous times he excessively relies on full self driving. Driving is a privilege, not a right, and if anyone puts this must trust on AI for such a dangerous activity, I can’t feel sorry for them. At the end of the day, this driver was responsible.

Is there a citation for the US being a net exporter of oil? Last I checked, they were a net exporter of Gas, which is not the same as oil. Oil is refined to produce gas, and the US imports the majority of said oil.

Jokes aside, to answer why knowing the value of ‘a’ might be useful before writing the full equation: ever work in excel and you’re building up a calculation, and when finished, your answer isn’t what you expected? Tracing that missing parentheses or brain-fart typo can be frustrating. I imagine that’s the same reason why some people would care about the value of ‘a’ before they’ve finished.

I meant to reference modern roads. Lane markings, signage, and setbacks are clearly spaced, designed, and optimized for traveling in a car. Those 45mph signs and the intentional spacing of lane markers were not designed because of bicyclists.

What law? Bicyclists do not automatically have the right of way. They are users of the road and must follow the same road laws as cars.

You say many roads… if you go by miles, you think major interstates weren’t designed for cars? How about rural roads… who do you think those long stretches of roads are designed for if not cars?

Cars are more dangerous than bicycles because they’re larger and faster, yes. But when you compare cars vs. bicycles on the same road, together, bicyclists are in more danger. I can only surmise the people that tell you “bicycles are dangerous,” are just looking out for your well being and meant “you’re putting yourself in danger.”

Unfortunately, roads were designed for cars first. Even more unfortunate, people are not accustomed to sharing the road with bicyclists and only glance at their mirrors to check for large familiar cars. Thus, to say that “cars are the ones that are dangerous,” implies you think bicyclists have the de facto right of way and everyone should adjust to your presence.

Apple announcements, especially WWDC used to be very exciting. I've watched all Apple announcements live since 2020ish. This is the first year where I am not watching live because it's been "meh" for a while now, and I can just read about it later.

Squarespace was my first experience with a hellish technical interview process back in 2014. I went through like 4 initial screens/take-home assignments for a {something} Analyst role that was considered entry level. I eventually gave up, and from that moment on, I hated Squarespace as a company. These take home assignments weren't even relevant for the role, yet they thought it made sense to inject it into the process. I'm glad they're 1 step closer to their demise.

To my knowledge, CDC provides a solution to the following 2 pain points. Would love to hear more:

1. Replication: Imagine you have 5 different analytical environments. Do you backup & restore to each destination, essentially re-writing 10TB of data, when only 2MB worth of data changed? You'd be surprised how many organizations still do this.

2. System Triggering: How can you inform a downstream system an event occurred? There are many mechanisms to do so, and they vary in complexity, but given the requirements are simple (if a row in the DB changes, let's tag this change as an event and just pass it to all the downstream systems that need to know this)
