He's betting the mods don't represent how most users feel.
Can I please recommend w/ no ill intent that you take news courses of action if you've unable to achieve raising a relatively low amount of capital after 10 year?
Genuinely curious where patio11 disagrees with this interview & why

readwise is so good that even though I LOVE physical books, I don’t buy them anymore. They wouldn’t get into my Readwise notes, which is now a crucial part of my daily workflow.
Why did this get penalized from #1 down to ~15?
Check out Lambda School’s part time (at night) program
I’ve watched that video probably over a dozen times since I first saw it on Kottke. This makes me sad.

An example question to consider:
why are electricians and plumbers less respected than university professors even though they often make far more money?

+1 for Icarus. Excellent, fascinating documentary. Don't get distracted by the weird title.
Hi, I'd love to chat but your email is not in your profile :)
I sold my Bible app company a few years ago, and it was mostly a PITA (e.g. took 7 months for a relatively small deal)
Now I acquire small SaaS businesses at CapitalAcademy.org and make it a point of making the process as painless as possible.
If you have any interest in selling or just want to learn about the acquisition process feel free to say hi, trevor@capitalacademy.org
Hard to compete against things like Lambda Academy where there's no up front cost and you only pay if you get a job: https://lambdaschool.com/computer-science
This is not true. Prices vary widely, and 2-3x is definitely within range of prices you'd see selling through brokers.
The price also depends on the product/company itself: how stable are revenues, what's churn, how diversified are traffic sources, etc.
Thank you for writing this. It's incredibly important and basically no one talks about it.
I can only reiterate what you've said: - Selling your company in an asset sale as a C-Corp increases your taxes 20-30% or more - Unless you're a BFD and have tons of inbound acquisition interest, the acquirer is going to dictate whether it's a stock sale or an asset sale, and they will almost always want an asset sale (less liability for them) - You should only be a C-Corp in the first place if you're a venture backed startup. Start with an LLC and just do a conversion to a C-Corp when you raise money; this maximizes your optionality.
This is a much more interesting story than you make it out to be! "College kid learns to code building sketchy Amazon Affiliate sites, gets job at AWS."
It seems whenever I do anything successful it always started as a small thing. No grand plans, just a small task or two done over and over until it's much larger.
It seems like good lives are built the same way as good companies: one small task at a time compounded over years.
The Economist comment came out of the blue. Why does the author believe that will help one improve?
I ran into this exact problem when selling my company. It's horrible.
How far along is the product? Have you talked to any lawyers about it?
Quit my job as an accountant at a big firm with no next job or prospects lined up. Ended up creating a successful iPhone Bible app.
Why in God's name does the CIA have a VC fund?
This is being way overblown IMO.
If you've worked at a big, regulated company, you know there are tons of trainings that you have to do.
Often said training provide little to no value, other than covering the ass (CYA'ing) of the employer.
But what's worse: these programs will sometimes log you out if you're not paying 100% attention.
Everyone I knew working at our Big 4 accounting firm would do our real work while these "training" videos played in the background.
Some engineer likely thought s/he was helping everyone out. And rightly so...their time was likely much better spent in other places given their incredible growth.
:) Yes you are correct.
I try to avoid details when higher levels of abstraction are sufficient for my audience.
Probably. I'm long overdue for changing hosts.
