That's one of the problems with cheap domains in the sub $5 range. Some gTLD registries (.space included) thought it was a good idea to offer them really cheap, but what they got were mostly spammers which puts you in a bad neighborhood.

As many others pointed out this is a change in ICANN policies and we are required to do this. The page will be completely neutral without any ads.

It's not that bad anymore. When I arrived 5 years ago the data caps were still terrible with around 10GB. They still exist but are 10x-20x higher now (and there are some unlimited plans) and 100mbit down is not uncommon. There's 4G with decent speed too... I get 27mbit down on my iPhone 5s in Wellington—that's on 3.5G. Some rural areas are not as lucky of course.

It's great to see other companies experimenting with openness in salaries. We've taken a different approach and pay all employees (including founders) the same salary which increases as the company grows. Our team is now 8-people strong and it's working great so far. As long as you contribute to the bottom line everyone's salary goes up automatically. It's totally transparent, no negotiations required, reviews, etc.

I moved from Germany to Australia in 2007 where I was able to save some money from my day job. Then moved across the ditch to Wellington, NZ about 6 months later with ~$10k cash in the bank. I started running out of money after 9 months which was exactly the time our little domain registrar iwantmyname could afford a small salary. Most exciting time of my life (in a good way) with moving countries and starting a company!

Just saying that GoDaddy can't do anything about the restore fees imposed by the registries. If they screwed up it should be carried out at the firm's expense but I highly doubt they would delete a domain without being explicitly told so.

GoDaddy's dashboard might be bloated which can be confusing but I doubt they deliberately delete domains after removing the credit card info from your account (as long as a domain hasn't reached the expiration date of course).

As the GoDaddy representative correctly mentioned, it is the registries who are to blame for any restore fees. It's bad enough that you as a customer lost domains so Verisign, PIR, Afilias or any other gTLD registry shouldn't ask for anything else but the normal renewal fee.

We are not an ICANN accredited registrar but it's something we might consider in the future. Lots of registrars started out as resellers (or still are for ccTLDs, e.g. eNom, Netsol going through a German registrar) so this is not an uncommon thing.

Most of our TLDs are registered through 1API which is a pure wholesale registrar and we're having a very close business relationship with them. I can promise you if there ever is an issue on the registrar/registry relationship part of the business, we will be able to solve it faster than many ICANN registrars.

It's most of the time coincidence. Especially with GoDaddy being the largest registrar. Millions of customers and two people had the same idea.

Judging from ICANN's current timeline not before late 2013 but my guess would be 2014 so it's still some time away (if .app will be in the first batch of approved TLDs which is very likely).

Wrong and a typical US-centric view... Germany's preferred TLD is .DE and has >15 mio registrations, .UK > 10 mio just to name the two largest ones. Generally speaking the easier (and cheaper) to register a ccTLD the more wide-spread it is in a country.

1) Transferring DNS is a bit of a pain indeed. Luckily GoDaddy lets you export the zone for each domain from their control panel. I would just send this to your new registrar and they can import the settings. Some registrars also give you an option to add DNS records when starting the transfer.

The domain was transferred 12 days ago and you have received an email informing you about the successful transfer. Sedo was only sending you a reminder to change the domain owner.

Email support answers during the weekend can sometimes take a few hours longer. As far as I can tell from our help desk, your request was answered after 13 hours. Did you send us an email before? If you don't receive an answer after 24 hours, feel free to ping us on Twitter.

Not yet. We're accredited for some ccTLDs and will add further accreditations as we grow. That's a common practice at lots of registrar companies. Even the big ones like GD, NetSol etc. are "only" resellers for some ccTLDs. We've got an excellent relationship with our ICANN registrar and access to all management functions so there isn't really a difference technology-wise.

To answer Marco's question: It is hard to be a good domain registrar but not impossible.

Let me tell you my little personal story about bootstrapping iWantMyName. I left Germany at the end of 2007 after working for a German domain registrar for nearly 6 years. We were successful (2 million domains under management) and the big ones GoDaddy, NetSol, eNom, Register.com etc. just started registering ccTLDs (country code top-level domains) through us.

But something didn't feel right... Domain registrars were getting lots of bad press (frontrunning, parking) and I started thinking of building a new domain management service. In the meantime I moved to Australia and after 6 months of being with an Australian registrar, I had enough. It was time to finally take the plunge. So I moved from Australia to New Zealand where we launched iWantMyName with zero dollar investment in December 2008. I knew one of my co-founders from Germany (luckily he was the former CTO of a registrar back in Germany and had enough of Europe too).

The first year was hard. Really fucking hard. We still had to do some consulting jobs to survive and our service could do nothing but register domains. No transfers, only certain DNS record types were supported, no whois updates. But for me it was really surprising how few features people actually need. Our site architecture helps to keep design work at a minimum level too, it's intentionally kept simple. Actually, we don't even have a designer in our team.

So where are we now a bit more than 2 years later? Well, we're running a profitable domain management service which generates six figures in revenue. This currently supports three founders, one employee and every single cent that's left will go into improving the user experience. No upselling, no annoying ads, no parking crap, auctions and what have you. We have decided not to compete on price, features or add crappy hosting services but only to give customers what they really need and that is purchasing / managing domains. Having said that, there's still lots of room for improvement and we will not stop until we've build the domain registrar Marco is looking for.
