I frequently create a new account so that I can post freely. I always try to post substantively, though of course a reader may disagree with this self-assessment. Were new accounts required to wait if either:

1. Create a new account every so often, so that in the event that I see a topic I’d like to comment on, I’m not precluded.

2. Just not post.

Were 2 to apply to a great many people I fear HN would be worse off. And anyway committed assholes would just take door number 1.

It’s weird that individuals are taxed on revenue but corporations are (usually?) taxed on profit.

If you model it as a lifetime annuity with inflation adjustment you are looking at more like 50k/year income at the outset were you to buy today.

My understanding is that annuities provide in general a worse return than the so called 4% rule on average.

While there’s perhaps a “clear and present danger” distinction, I think this analogy is a good one because we are talking about similar interventions: nonviolent, easily overcome. No one’s gonna die from taking a cab home or missing out on the latest conspiracy theory.

I have no ADD whatsoever, but similarly find it difficult not to focus entirely on subtitles to the exclusion of all else.

I don’t know that this is a reasonable generalization. Certainly in my CS department one could write a thesis to receive an MS, and no MAs were offered. Just one data point, from a very large state school; YMMV.
