Begs the question, what kinds of local businesses are structurally safe from being disrupted by Amazon? Some that come to mind:

* Food - restaurants, fast food, pizza, takeout

* Social experiences - bars, cafes, arcades, comedy clubs

* Things that can't be shipped - gas stations, perishables

* Things you want right away - milk, delis, convenience stores

* Things that can't be commoditized - Copying keys

* Services - Barber shops, mechanics

Other ideas?

To be fair, neither the left nor the right are persevering in debate these days. For every X-"ism" claim from the left, there's an equivalent "fake news" gaslighting attempt from the right. The degeneration of politics today comes from both extremes of the political spectrum.

Major difference though is that we as individuals gave Facebook permission, and most of us would still knowingly make a "limited tracking in exchange for tangible personal utility" trade.

We as individuals never gave the NSA permission to track us, and most of us would never knowingly make the "unlimited tracking in exchange for nebulous collective utility" trade.

Possibly because it's a lot easier today to generate income without "producing" or creating new value.

"Sayer argues that the past four decades have been characterised by a transfer of wealth not only from the poor to the rich, but within the ranks of the wealthy: from those who make their money by producing new goods or services to those who make their money by controlling existing assets and harvesting rent, interest or capital gains. Earned income has been supplanted by unearned income."

Built-in distribution, period. No other platform gets you as many readers w/o doing any self-marketing.

The design and functionality is nice, but I think it would still be similarly successful if it looked like Geocities.

Thought experiment: If you kept the design & functionality, but took away the distribution, would it be in the deadpool? My gut says yes.
