I have a friend that is a historian. He was visiting a monastery in Macau to view some very old texts brought by the first Portuguese priests. They were under the care of a very old priest who spoke Cantonese and some Portuguese. My friend spoke Portuguese but they were not getting very far so he tried Latin. They conversed in Latin fluently for the rest of his time there.

I think that this is a very important piece of the discussion. Improving the efficiency of a lot of workers and increasing automation does not marry up well with a constantly increasing world population.

Antibiotics for example. If someone was prescribed an antibiotic for an infection, read your site and decided to stop taking it after a few days to avoid a side effect while waiting for an appointment with their doctor to find a suitable replacement, then it may increase resistance. Worse, they might stop the treatment and not bother finding any alternative if they feel "better enough".

I agree that discussions on medications are good for the majority of cases but antibiotics should be considered firmly in the domain of the specialists who "should" take into account local resistance rates, etc.

This sounds like a very positive step.

As concerned as I am about the new or novel infectious agents, such as ebola, the largest problem will come from common pathogens that are only treatable with the strongest of antibiotics (that often have more serious side effects).
