UC Davis grad and still live in the area. I believe almost all strawberries grown commercial come from UC Davis. Was the whole big issue with this strawberry commission thing that a few professors ran and tired to take the IP when they left. Was interesting. I love being able to grow really delicious tomatoes with almost no effort. Always look forward to tomatoes season. I cure my own homemade bacon and make sourdough bread. Best BLT sandwich even use lettuce I grow sometimes. UC Davis has some great online resources for gardening. I have even thought about starting a beehive but I am not sure I want to go through the effort.

I am forever thankful for California community colleges. I did not the best high school slacked off mostly c's doing the bare minimum. Went to local community college loved it took so many amazing classes with great teacher. I transferred to uc Davis with admissions under contract if hekd certain gpa. Cost me about 4k for two year in fees and books. At uc Davis for 2 years 30k. I learned more at my community college than a pretty decent public research college. Still uc Davis was worth it worked as student employee doing computer support. Turned that into full time job at the college as computer programmer and then gotA e jobs making way more doing the same thing. Never got CS degree just got chance to some cool things I had no business doing. All thanks to community college

I got solar in northern California with new roof that needed to be replaced. I got 30 percent tax credit on the roof as well. Paid for the roof in cash but took 10 year loan out for the solar panels at 3.0 percent. Break even at this rate is about 4 years already a few year in. With inflation right now I feel like I got good deal borrowing the money. Right now my loan payment plus then 10.00 monthly connection fee is less than my average monthly bill before 2019. Not sure I would do it with needing a new roof though. But everybody experience will be different.

It is also was built on super fund site. I still will not understand why Davis and other places are ok with a Target but will die before getting a Walmart. It is very impressive how target is able to pretend like they treat there employees any better..

Davis is cool if your young. I went to UC Davis and lived there a few years after I graduated. But some of the residents that live there are just something else. Some people hate the college even though they owe everything the town has to the college. I wish it was more affordable.

Very true I am taking the opposite bet. I refinanced last year 30 year 2.85 apr. In California so prop 13 means property taxes won't go up to fast. I have no plans to pay it off earlier. But we are kinda stuck we can sell our house for a nice profit on what I paid 5 years ago. Then I have to pay for another house that is expensive in the current marketing. Not really looking to relocate to cheaper place. So I am just hoping all the money I am putting in the stock market ends up being the right call. Who knows though. Either approach could be a good choice in the right situation.

They just rolled out att fiber into my neighborhood. I was surprised as I live in a older neighborhood. Have overhead power lines talked with att installer and he said that was the reason we go it. Went from 1 gig down 30 mbps upload cable for 100 a month to 70 for gig full up and down and they gave me 400 bucks for signing up. It is pretty awesome having a direct fiber line to the house. My brother lives in Santa Rosa California and is on the list to get 10 gig fiber from Sonic for 65 a month. Hopefully things are starting to change. Once he has it I was thinking of just doing rysnc between us for backup.

That is what I am trying to get at. I think atleast here in the United States the bigger your state gets with population the more your going to see issues like you describe. Unfortunately I just do not see any government looking inward to improve efficiencies at this rate. I agree with everything you state and want the same.

Honestly I just think this how all governments operate.

In theory we can vote them out and replace them. Then the new people will do the same things most likely.

You can shame them all you want but if they still hold office, they will not care.

We should still keep trying though. Maybe we can find the right leader's that look out for everybody and do all the above. But I am pretty cynical about it.

I like to think Churchill quote about democracy is right. We have been struggling with this issue forever. Plato's republic and all that.

You are right being able to criticizing governments is really important.

I guess we just keep trying. Wish I had better answer.

I wonder if there is correlation between what people think of as incompetence and the population of the state. Would be interesting to look at. I have no data to support this just a guess but I would guess when population increases you get things like this. I mean Texas is the second most populous state and is literally politically the opposite of California. There power grid was 5 mins away from literally crashing completely. So it sure is not what"side" the government picks. Both have struggled with power distribution.

Eh how is it purely political kangaroo court with jury convinctions? And for sure they only bring cases they think they can win they admit to this.. for sure having money helps get you better defense. But a purely political kangaroo is a pretty big stretch. Unless you are talking about the secret FISA courts sure. What is way more scary is the whole killing USA citizen via drone strikes in foreign countries no court cases at all.

This and if you owned just total market index funds you are up over 40 percent from last year. I never try to beat the market just ride it. I am in it for the long term.

Yep my dad drilled that one into me. Every exit interview I have done is the same exact script. I really was not looking I am quite happy here but this was to good of opportunity to turn down.

Wish you and the wife the best! I do not have the courage to do something like that. Even though my wife would tell me the same thing. It is quite amazing to find someone that truly cares about you! Cherish it. I have trust issue as well with my crazy family life. I really look forward to reading your blog post about this. You got this!!

When I was kid my dream I was to be NASA engineer.. from kindergarten to high school if you asked me what you wanted to do I would say work for NASA building rockets!!. Heck no joke I am wearing a shirt right now I got Kennedy space center with all the shuttle's on it. We were visiting Disney world when the last shuttle was on the Launchpad. Convinced them to drive out for the day to check out. Got vip tour and everything best thing ever. Then I read up more about the challenger diaster and was heartbroken. Swore off NASA except for JPL. Thought about working for SpaceX but did not want suffer under them. I am really hoping by the time I am 50 or so I can pay to do a few Orbits around the world. I would pay atleast 100k of today money for it.

Yes and they should get paid that much. When I went to school at University of California we would look up the salaries of our teachers. Most of the highest paid people were football coaches. But a few doctors making around 1.5 million. Looked the person up they invented a way to do liver transplants. They have done over 800 transplants over there career at the school. They also taught how to do the surgery. That is money well spent.

I like it. I kinda wish I got the touring for eyesight for adaptive cruise control. But it came with leather and I was just not going to deal with leather. Though the outback XT is pretty good as it is 2.4 ascent engine so no premium.

Same with my Subaru Forester! My car got totaled so I needed a new one. Used Forster that were 2-3 years old with 30k miles were selling for 24-26k with loan interest rate of 1.9 or so. I ended up by a brand new Forster xt for 28k with 0 interest loan from Subaru. Only cost me 2k more to get brand new car with full warranty vs a car that was 3 years old. Made back the difference in interest rate. I took a 5 year loan because why not no interest. I was never underwater on the car as put decent amount down.

It is super laughable because the nuclear powered version that they are building for themselves was a fixed bid contract for something like 10 billion for 8 subs.. and the Australian contract keeps going up and up something like 35 billion for ten subs. The diesel sub for Australia is based on the nuclear sub that they signed the fixed bid contract for. Anybody with half brain can tell they are making up the lost of fixed bid contract by charging the Australia more.. and then they act surprised when Australia pulls out when they can get nuclear subs for cheaper. When nuclear subs usually cost 2.5* the cost. These people do great reporting on all of this. https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone

Really depends on the company and in big companies it depends on your team. My very first job out college had vacation and sick time. You could take your vacation at any time no questions asked. It was really nice but they paid less than everybody else. But the work life balance was much better. You saw a lot of people with families come and work there and take paycut. It was interesting seemed work well for them.

Yes you never want to hit your cap. At some of my older jobs people would be like oh crap I gotta take two weeks off starting next week. I much rather have defined PTO. My last role and current role are "unlimited PTO" I take about 4-5 weeks off with out issue. But you are taking a risk for sure going to company with "unlimited PTO".

Yep in California PTO and vacation get paid out. They can not do use it or lose it. They can cap how much of PTO and vacation you can have at one time. Sick time does not need to be paid out. The whole scam of unlimited PTO is so they do not have to pay out when you leave. Then can not roll over your PTO or vacation at the end of year but if they do that, they have you pay you out.

China wants a buffer zone between them and south Korea. USA tells china make sure NK does not do anything to crazy. And yes if NK attacked south Korea they could kill lots of people.. but after that the USA would carpet bomb them until nothing was left. One of the above comments is very accurate. Basically NK Will not attack. And NK Will exist for as long as china sees value in it.
