It's not uncommon for companies to "clear house" right before close of acquisitions, especially on exec level. However I don't believe it's for the reasons you mentioned (saving money). Instead it's likely to better align with new ownership (whether perceived or actual alignment) and ensure the company is well positioned for the change.

An established/relatively healthy org like Twitter will likely not be penny pinching at the risk of more fallout/attrition. In fact, I'm sure the convo went something like "if you leave now, you will keep xyz/golden parachute".

Right, they had this big mainstream push with being the first Homekit partner with a failed hub, plethora of non-core devices and multiple failed apps. I think they got ahead of themselves going into this mass market and should've stayed a niche player, further perfecting their core hardware and focussing on enthusiasts and home installers. Kind of like Philips Hue did but for enthusiasts/professionals.

There’s no need to use Insteons hub/cloud service. Most Insteon power users that I know are using homeseer, homeassistant as a way to control the devices.

The other good thing about, at least the light switches (which is their core product), is that they work without an internet connection and will continue to function.

However unfortunately the less tech savvy users who set up automations through Insteons service will be left (quite literally) in the dark now.

Having gone through two twin pregnancies (where the odds of these tests being correct are especially low) we declined all of them. Anecdotally, I know of several parents who had a positive test for genetic disorder, went ahead with the pregnancy anyway and children were perfectly healthy. Until these tests are close to 100% reliable I don’t see the point.

You must be kidding or willfully ignoring the atrocities committed by Russia just in the last decade or two (occupying Crimea, Afghanistan, wars in Chechnya, Georgia and likely Kazakhstan sometime soon) or China (Uyghurs). I’ve run into the same issue that standard battery packs on eBikes are just not enough. The problem is not so much needing to do super long trips but if you forget to charge one day, you’re going to be stuck the next. Luckily it’s become more common for OEMs to offer dual battery setups with the piece of mind of extended range but also having a warranty! We own two cargo eBikes in the family and both have two Bosch batteries. Range varies from 80 to 200 miles depending on level of assist and is more than enough for our daily ~20 mile errands.

Not sure I understand the appeal. It’s still a derailleur, isn’t it?

Lots of (higher end) bikes moved to internal hub systems like Rohloff [1] that have proven to be very reliable, maintenance free and (other than higher upfront costs) are superior to a derailleur in almost every way.

This! Putting down 20k on a house in my late twenties was one of the best investments I’ve ever made.

I was especially surprised so many of my peers who had no clue that’s how little it takes to get into a mortgage. Of course, assuming you have a steady job/income.

My twins were born June 2020 and all my immediate family (parents, brother, etc) live in the EU and haven’t been able to see them (nor their other grandkids). Not allowing tourists to come visit I can get behind but splitting up close family, especially for these extended periods of time (and especially when they are vaccinated!) is just cruel and senseless. I really don’t see how this is helping anything, given that countless countries with much higher case rates are not on the banned list.

(Current green card holder) I was scheduled to have my citizenship interview in early April that got de-scheduled. On USCIS website it still says I’m scheduled to complete the citizenship process in August, which seems unlikely. Do you have any insight as to whats a realistic timeline to receive my citizenship?

This is exactly what the Russian government would want you to do with this: question everything and everyone. You seem to at least admit that you were unable to verify some outrageous claims that the US has planted evidence against Russia. It has been proven time and time again that Russia doesn't shy away from systematically cheating in major sport competitions. This entirely adds up with my experience growing up there: status and perceived image have always ranked higher than truthfulness or honesty in Russian culture.

Also, based on your comment history, I'm not necessarily doubting your truthfulness but you do seem to be pushing a focussed agenda in your comments.

Great looking website! But... I hated it. As soon as I opened it the fan on my 1 yr old Macbook Pro started spinning like crazy. As I scrolled down, so many things were animating it made my head dizzy. I fully understand the need to stand out but shouldn't the #1 goal of a (landing) website be to educate the user (me) about what you do and why it's relevant to me. Maybe this product is super useful and I would pay serious money for it. Maybe it will solve all my problems in the best possible way. Unfortunately, I will probably never find out due to this first time experience.

Same can be said for keys on a keyboard you rarely use but why not have it there for that one time you need it? I for one, don’t want to be going through menus just to adjust my steering wheel - especially when I already started driving (which surprisingly happens often that someone else adjusted the steering wheel and I don’t notice until I’m already driving).

As far as comparing with the Volt, the Model 3 and Volt are in two different leagues. The volt is a mass market EV that could’ve been had (ironically, they discontinued it ;) for well under $30k. Model 3 starts at 40k and is competing with BMWs, Audi’s and Mercedes with much better ergonomics due to increased R&D spending over something like a Chevy.

I realize this is a Tesla tear down (and I agree with a lot of it, having driven different Tesla’s myself) but I would like to see a more comprehensive analysis comparing different other infotainment systems on the market because there are much better ones than Tesla’s.

For example, one of the biggest complaints of touch screens mentioned in the article is lack of haptic feedback. I believe Audi/Porsche solved that really well in their latest models by using (multiple) touch screens that provide physical feedback upon pressing. In addition, half of the “buttons” have a fixed placement and can be blindly operated.

Ahh the NIO - a car that was announced back in 2016 that no one yet has seen in production form, let alone driven.

Unfortunately, the EV startup market (especially in China) seem to only be good at building slick websites showcasing vaporware products, at least for now.

IMO what you describe can be summarized as a UX problem. Those things are there but it takes time and effort to find them, usually hard to figure out and therefor not adoptable by the masses. It's much easier to sign up for FB and start consuming through their slick UX. This is why big money wins time and time again. This is why Bitcoin, Linux, IRC, p2p, etc never had as much of a mass breakthrough as some had hoped, and likely never will.

Looking back, growing up in/near Delft was probably one of the best experiences in my life. Being able to get anywhere in our smallish (100k population) city within 10 minutes (and usually less) by bicycle had some great advantages when I was in my teens. Without the infrastructure, I arguably wouldn't have had the same level of independence that lead to some of the best experiences in my early life. Like biking to school independently, frequent games of DnD with friends across town and other social activities, going to library daily to play with computers, drinking alcohol for the first time and being able to (safely) get home, etc.

In contrast bringing up my own kids in car-centric California seems quite more limiting. I like to brag to my American friends how I would bike to school by myself at age 9 and how it would be completely impossible here. Now, I don't think we should necessarily try to compare or convert every place to one like Delft but experiencing this increased/free mobility early on in life definitely changes ones perspective and arguably stimulates greater independence.

This is an integral part of a driving exam in the Netherlands. You are drilled to look over the shoulder for literally every maneuver (lane switch, turn, etc.) and if you fail to do it even once during the driving exam you will get a fail. In other news: driving test in the US is a complete joke.
