I think people think things will go faster than they do. The AI revolution will probably be a bit like the industrial revolution which took a couple of centuries to go from Newcomen's steam engine of 1712 to mass produced cars and the like. With AI, Turing came up with his test in 1950 and it's taken about 75 years to get to something that looks like passing. Give it time.

For the idea to make sense I think you have to project forward some years to launches being cheaper and compute demand outrunning the energy grid.

Geography is not generally the most important factor. There are legal ownership precedents and then the will of the people who live there first. You can't just say Greenland or Canada are United States because the happen to be close. Or at least you shouldn't.

Well, I said NATO had never invaded bordering countries. Iraq doesn't border and also members of NATO can do their own thing. I think NATO did get roped into involvement in Serbia by the US but it's not their mission.

Re. ground troops dining in Red Square, firstly Latvia is also about six hours drive from Moscow as well so going via Kyiv wouldn't make much difference. Secondly there is the small business of the worlds largest nuclear arsenal and many troops to put off invaders. And thirdly many countries border NATO countries and seem to manage to deal with it without freaking out and invading others.

London has a ton of ethnic Russians who do fine under a NATO regime that's hostile to Russia.

Russia had long tolerated NATO on it's borders in Latvia and Estonia and is now OK with Finland. NATO is really a defensive alliance that has never attacked any of the countries it borders.

I always thought it a bit pessimistic on the upsides like robot to build us palaces, immortality, conquer the galaxy type stuff along the lines of the "Grandiosity" bit in the essay. It's interesting that the red tape is still there on the Russian side. A Ukrainian drone maker can make a new one and put it on their brave1 website straight away, Russian ones have to go through a lengthy bureaucratic procurement process. I think Russian interceptor drones still can't use explosive warheads because regulation, health and safety etc. It's quite a plus for the Ukrainians.

Fans are pretty much like propellers and the F15 uses a turbofan and goes supersonic. It works by inlets and exhaust nozzles that slow the air the speed it up again. The only reason that might not work on an electric drone with fans and nozzles is not enough power.

Europe isn't as bad as you might think. Though they may not be no.1 in military economic or innovation they are still quite strong.

Ukraine is an example - when that oval office thing happened Trump thought he could cut aid to Ukraine and force it to surrender with a cut of the spoils to the US/him but Europe took over and since then have probably been doing better - I note Russia's largest refinery 2500 km from Ukraine blew up last night.

You don't necessarily need to be competitive with US tech to be independent. Most countries aren't as good as the US on tech but they get by.
