China is playing the long game. They can go spend a trillion bucks and hire/steal the tech and they could destroy Taiwan's competitive advantage, and they could just economically crush them.
On aggregate people go were the money is. There are exceptions, but greed motivates a lot of smart ambitious people.
People go where the money is. It is capitalism. SV is where the money is so people are going to go there. Same as wall street before it. You want the best talent you pay the most money. With Europe paying so little compared to the US I don't know if Crotia or anywhere in europe will be a real tech hotbed.
NN/ai concepts have been around for a while. It is just computers had not been fast enough to make it practical. It was also harder to get capital back then. Those guys put the silicon in silicon valley.

In general its a dirty process. There are a lot of toxic chemicals involved. People might get sick. Margins aren't as good as software and its very capital intensive so investors would rather invest in software. Lots of booms and bust in the semiconductor industry.

A vast majority of advisors (90%) aren't going to beat an index fund. You are just giving money away money by hiring an advisors.
Unless you want to pull offshore tax shelters or Real estate depreciation schemes its not super complicated to do taxes. Invest long-term and you are getting capital gains tax.

A bootcamp person can learn most of these things. It just seems with some of our recent hires they don't seem to want to learn this stuff or maybe it doesn't really matter for react devs.
And these things do make a difference. L1 cache is faster than L2 cache which is faster than L3 which is faster than memory which is faster than hard disk etc. You want your code to keep things within those limits to make things faster.
Or for example if you start using virtual memory and paging to disk you might want to switch algorithms. For example you might want to use merge sort instead of quick sort if you don't have a lot of ram and you have to go to disk. However if you have 128GB of memory and mostly randomized data you want to use quicksort.
This is kind of trivial example, but I think this stuff is somewhat important.
Just tax the employer 1x on H1b workers salary. If employee gets 100k then government gets a 100k. That will probably solve the h1b problem quickly. If employer truly believes this person is that valuable they will have no problem paying the tax.

For a lot of kids its the only way out of the hood. Especially these kids in super 30. If they don't make it its back to poverty. If they get in they have the ability change their entire families socioeconomic status including parents and siblings. Its like pro athletes or rappers trying to get out of the hood. Its hard to do.
To a lot of kids it is a life or death situation.
How hard can it be to make a wifi food scale? Why do you need data scientist. Inventory management is very well studied science. There are plenty of formulas to calculate optimal reordering points. You probably can use seasonal ARIMA to forecast coffee use. I know this is just going to come off as sour grapes, but how does a company like this get into YC?

The US is not in the top 10. Despite being the country the most people want to come to. It has by far the most unicorns. More than the next three combined. They ding the US for education. Does it really matter when people want to come here?

PhDs need to be banned. It is basically bunch of professors who exploit a bunch of graduate students from foreign countries. The professors controls the visa which effectively controls the student. The worst offenders are usually the Foreign professors which is ironic since they should be the ones to realize how harmful it is. A professors tried pull this stunt on me, but he didn't realize I had papers. So got the hell away from his lab.
India is a country with a huge split. There is a lot of rich people and and a lot of poor people. This is the only chance a lot of these kids have to get out of their situation. We complain about america's social safety net well India's is a lot worse. It doesn't really even exist. If some of these kids can't get out they lose hope. I think the dream is get into IIT, get into MNC or US college and get out.
Yeah it puts a huge amount of pressure on kids because it might not be just them, but their families too. They are making huge sacrifices too for their kid to succeed.
The median household income in DC is 75k. So you are making 130-160k you are way above the median. Everyone doesn't make 300k. Its like HN exists in its own universe.

I just think the importance of the H1B is a little overblown, but I am not opposed to to it either. I think if you can make it to the US and hold a job we shouldn't kick you out.
This is not going to be a popular opinion. My opinion has kind of changed on H1B people. I have talked to a bunch of these folks and they were hating on other immigrants. Some of the people from South American countries are basically are coming here so they don't get killed.
Most of the H1Bs could get a job in their country and at least have some safety. Everyone is just trying to better their lives.
India Graduates vastly more people than america. Even if only 10% of them are any good that is a massive number of good people. I am not sayings only 10% are any good its just a number. American companies should just go over there if they want.
