Has anyone had performance issues using JSONPath? We are processing large pieces of data per request in a node express service and we believe JSONPath is causing our service to lock up and slow down. We’ve seen the issue improve as we have started refactoring out JSONPath usage for vanilla iteration and conditional checks.

There are a lot of factors at play so we can’t quite put our thumb on JSONPath, but it’s the current suspect and curious if others have run into anything similar.

Agree with all of this. As a single parent though it’s hard to find the free time - for me, only during school hours (work time) or if I explicitly arrange child care, which is rare because well, usually I want to and am doing activities with my kid.

Being a younger dad relative to my kids age, it has been very isolating and challenging to find anyone who shares my lifestyle, my responsibilities, who can really understand the stage of life I am in. They are usually either very pre-kid and enjoy life independently, without much awareness or desire thereof to the responsibility of parenthood, or, they are on the opposite end and fully settled down and have forgotten what a city looks like after dark.

Software, cycling and pizza. Some of my favorite things in life. This project and write-up was thoroughly enjoyed, and has inspired some of my own similar ideas now! Cheers

I’d love to hear what the inspiration for this was. Maybe just a code golf project for fun, but based on the author’s last blog post, something tells me the iceberg of inspiration runs deep.

My follow up question would be, how do you envision sharing a sheet? With someone right next to me, and with someone across the world. With or without internet access, seeing that this office suite is offline-first.

This is one of the coolest things I've seen on HN. I am definitely going to try to follow the instructions on this in the near future! I don't even play saxophone, but now I am not definitely going to learn. I would 100% buy one of these, if not 3 so I could give some as gifts.

Try horizon workroooms. To me, immersed is like Linux - tons of options, more features, but it’s a bit trickier to set up just right and things seem to not stay right, it takes constant adjustment.

Horizon workrooms was like using a Mac - it “just works” when I onboarded, less features but way less hassle. I much prefer it personally.

I question if any of these other commenters have actually tried the Quest Pro yet and specifically with 1) Horizon Workrooms and 2) a mac and 3) a supported tracked keyboard from apple or Logitech.

I was a complete Meta disbeliever and long time Quest owner, having put a few dozen hours into working in Immersed last year before putting it down and accepting it wasn’t good enough.

Fast forward to last weekend, give it a try with the setup described above instead. Proceeded to do a 9hr shift fully in VR. Went out, got the Pro, and now I am all in. We are there. Give it a shot, you can always return it right?

So, interesting stuff! I had my installation appointment, the guy came out and proceeded to tell me that the 5k plan would be useless to me. I asked why - apparently switches have not progressed at the same speed. Latest MBPs for example only support up to ~1300Mbps via wifi (however could support up to 10Gb bandwidth via Ethernet.) Most of my devices I use via wifi anyways. I have 1 Pi plugged in. I guess most hardware only has a 1k switch in it these days?

With that new info, I decided to stick to my 1k plan until more hardware catches up.

Same thing happened to me about 5 months ago. I ended up email the CEO. Had an executive relations staffer email me back within minutes, and I had my number back within about a day. YMMV.

assuming ssh and not scp, replacing traditional ssh with mosh in this setup could prove for some interesting benefits wrt network dependency. If the connection was less brittle, and directories could be opened and cached and rewritten later on, after the connection was disrupted and re-established…that’d be awesome.

Native mobile apps could arguably be considered “frontend” such that they are the client the user uses to interface with your backend. Frontend !== “web”. I would say this is where it gets slippery, because previously there wasn’t such a silo between “native mobile aka native frontend” engineers vs “native platform aka backend” engineers. Now there is, and so the term frontend is evolving to mean anything exposing a UI of sorts.

With that in mind, IMO the examples you outlined seem to fit the fe/be full stack paradigm.

4 words - “what is your budget?”

If they hesitate, just ask them for a ballpark - “1k, 10k, 50k, 250k” (usually start this at the lowest you’re willing to go for a project because small clients will just pick the lowest number)

Different clients looking for the exact same thing can have different budgets. You may be able to sell a piece of software to one company for $50k that another company will only pay $5k for. Value is subjective to the business.

Simply just ask them what their budget is, or what ballpark they are looking to spend to accomplish this goal.

If they say $5k, great, you can charge $5k. If they say $1k, you may need to think about how to cut scope to offer them something for $1k without you dropping your rate, that way you can still service them. And if they say $50k, then you hit the client gold mine and you have plenty of work to do!

This tells you what type of client they are right out the gate. They will either use this opportunity to balk and minimize perceived value, or they will confirm that they will happily pay you your worth so long as the mission is successful. You want the latter clients.

Also try to avoid one time payment. Instead of $1500 for the project and you think it’ll take a week, draft an agreement that says “$1000 per week, estimated 2 weeks of work, here are the list of priorities we will tackle, after two weeks you can choose to continue to pay me per week to finish any remaining tasks or for new work.”

Just ask questions. If you don’t know what something is - ask. Forget about everyone else in the meeting - chances are someone else feels exactly the same way and is also too nervous to speak up and ask for help.

Let the meeting driver keep course, if they don’t want to take the time to explain, let them say so and ask to “take it offline” for follow up.

The whole purpose of meetings is to get aligned. If you’re not clear on what it is to even be aligned with, that’s step one and that is totally fine, there is no shame. You have to put yourself out there and speak up, otherwise you will get left behind, because only you are looking out for yourself. No one is going to drag you along besides simply inviting you to the meeting. Take the opportunity into your own hands and demand clarity. Either you get it, problem solved, or you receive pushback, at which point you’re clearly not needed in the discussion and so you dismiss yourself to more important things.

In your example, “I don’t know what any of those things are, can you explain?” is a perfectly valid piece of feedback. Rinse and repeat until you get clarity or someone tells you it’s out of scope for the discussion (which means “catch up on your own time”). If anything, this is valuable feedback to the meeting driver that maybe not all communication is taking place as it should be, why are team members not informed? This leads to learnings, which is why it’s valuable for everyone involved if you speak up.

This doesn’t really address the point. As I said above, yes cash and crypto have this same flaw, they are useless without the ability to trade it. What is a dollar good for? Wrapping a stick of gum? That was the point. True utility value.

Do you have any recommended readings on zk-proofs? Familiar with crypto, familiar with zcash, but haven’t looked into this enough and sounds promising. I am going to look into it.

I like that. Risk of losing it, and difficulty of recovery of the same or an equal asset.

Life, for example, is extremely valuable. Everyone loses it, but there’s no getting it back. If you lose the apple, you can probably get another relatively easily, unless we’re talking a post-apocalypse situation…

I understand cash has this same issue. Assets do not - they provide an actual value to the physical world - which is what my point was in the above statement. A crypto t shirt can still provide value as a t shirt, regardless of the value of the coins it holds. I’ll admit it’s a reach, but just to illustrate the point.

Marginal value itself is unstable compared to real value. Sure, the amount of air you require may change, albeit insignificantly. Marginal value can go +/- total value at any moment due to external factors.

Breathable air and drinkable water have the greatest real value of anything, but their marginal values are zero and near zero respectively for a number of reasons

Case in point. Sure, abundant now. But when they are not, which we know is actually happening, that “0 marginal value” will quickly become “whatever we can afford so we can survive”.

Oh totally agree - someone can just pull a necklace right off you. I was just surfacing the point that at least gold does has some value on its own as a status symbol - there is a market for jewelry outside of gold as a transfer protocol. An bitcoin wallet without ability to transfer it is just some used up memory, it doesn’t have any value on its own. See coins going to 0 when exchanges close their doors. All the banks in the world could close and people would still find shiny rocks attractive and admirable. We have for thousands of years.

This matters. Even gold, at least I can wear it and display my wealth. You can’t even display your crypto wealth like that. It is entirely lacking in any “real” value.

Idea: luxury tshirt made out of a $5 white tee with a wallet QR code slapped on the front showing off the balance of the shirt. Or a ring. Crypto fine jewelry.

If a geopolitical climate is too volatile for fiat to provide value, what good is it that crypto can isolate its stability (it can’t) if the humans who would use it have bigger problems than how to pay with money they already have in some form? Supply chains, physical force/warfare, climate, etc. If fiat is breaking down, there are surely bigger problems at play. How does solving the ability to transfer money solve the overall stability of the situation?

Per your example, ok Apple Pay got cut off. Is the transit system going to support crypto? Will they be able to run their business and make that transition with regulators? It’s a drastic measure that cuts one off from the structures that they physically exist in, and unless those structures are overall crypto-supportive, they would just be putting themselves further between a rock and hard place (which as we’ve seen by the lack of serious business adoption, companies and orgs are not really willing to take that risk in any meaningful way)

Edit: I agree with your use of the term “regime” and am not arguing against the sentiment of your point. Just that I don’t think crypto actually has the backbone to solve it, there’s not enough physical-world tie in yet for it to have the leverage it needs to truly overcome the global financial regimes that are neck-deep in fiat and physical assets that actually impact everyday peoples’ lives.

This is how you know this is a real hacker - says 3-6 months, feins sarcasm, then will show up next week with the modifications and a lack of sleep.
