How about this scene from It's a Wonderful Life. Is this movie still popular at Christmas time ?

But regarding torture, in the 70's Christian/Roman era themed movie were commonly shown on TV. As a child I concluded that every man eventually gets tortured. While we were watching a particularly brutal scene I asked my dad if he was ever tortured and didn't believe him when he said "no". But if TV weren't enough, we had a crucifix in every room and I found the normalization and ubiquity of depictions of torture depressing and confusing, leaving me convinced I was born on the wrong planet.

IIRC DNA methylation (sp?) is used in blood tests to determine the rate at which you are aging biologically. This article does claim that the children who are touched less develop at a slower in addition to having a lower DNA methylation. So in a sense, the less a child is touched, the slower the child ages biologically according to this marker and observation.

Anecdotally, there are environmental situations where animals can significantly increase life-expectancy but at the expense of delayed sexual maturity.

It would be interesting, but of course not conclusive, to see if these children experience puberty later and if they also live longer. Perhaps some neglect has some benefit.

Perhaps evolution has partially tuned the mixture of personality types that is optimal for us as a species. For example if there is a leadership gene then it should be ~10 times rarer than the follower gene. There could also be epigenomic (sp?) affects as well where one's leadership gene doesn't express itself unless there is a vacuum of leadership.

Years ago I just accepted being "hangry", and "that 3PM feeling" as a consequence of being thin. With low body fat, of course I can't skip a meal and I need to drink a bottle of Gatorade while I sit at my desk and code. And I certainly need that late night snack to ensure I don't wake in the middle of the night in hunger.

But in reality, thin with ~10% body fat equates to enough calories for 20+ days for most people. What I lacked was metabolic flexibility and that's what I gained after praticing TRE (10:30AM - 5:30PM M-F) for the past months. A few times a month I go 24hours with just 100 calories from a Keto coffee drink and feel fantastic. And I am actually gaining weight / muscle mass for the first time in a decade.

I wish I had started doing this sooner. Being able to skip meals and being free from the leash of food feels like a super power.

In 6th grade we started learning about the various torture methods used on Catholic saints. There was one particularly enthusiastic lesson where our teacher explained how doctors recently confirmed the intersection of human wrist bones could, as a pair, support the weight of human body and that rope wouldn't be necessary to bind someone to a crucifix.

We learned all sorts of confusing and depraved ideas that made it nearly impossible to concentrate during the non-religious classes. At least that was my experience. It's arguable that these schools should be attended by no one, let alone be publicly funded.

"What option women settle on because of that isn’t yet clear".

Well from my experience it isn't settling for an older man.

When I was in my 30's and making $100K+ I tried on-line dating and was pleased at how many desirable women responded to my profile. Assuming that would always be the case, I decided to focus on my career and postpone getting into a serious relationship.

At 47 I decided to "settle down" and resume on-line dating. With a target age range of 34 to 40 since I would like to have children. I am millionaire, tall, good looking, muscular, high-income, etc. But the only responses I received are from women 50+. Not sure how this ends for me but at the moment I feel a sense dread.

It can be difficult to predict the knowledge gaps in a high school kid, even the "intelligent" ones.

A smart friend told me that a score of 800 is all it took to "pass the SAT". He said you could get into the best colleges with that score as long as your grades were good, etc. So we put no effort into studying for the exam. We regretfully, conflated the combined score with the individual section scores.

We also had another misconception that college was a waste of time. A place where rich kids go to join a frat and burn their family's money.

The irony is that this occurred at a private "prep" high school. In my late 20's I finally realized that "prep" was short for "college preparatory school".

The above was 30 years ago. Perhaps with social media and the internet it is unlikely any student would be this misinformed.

Well if you casually observed the last two generations of my Hispanic family, you would say we made it work too. But that is because the culture pushes the youngest daughters to not get married and have no children. So now we have multiple women in our family who are bitter, boring, poor, and have destroyed their careers prospects because "it works" for the rest of the family.

One of most surprising headlines I saw this week is that in NYC you can be fined $250,000 for calling someone an "illegal immigrant".

I can understand that such an accusation may be slanderous under civil law. But the criminal law seems to only apply to that specific phrase, not the accusation.

Does anyone understand how such a seemingly unconstitutional law could get passed ?

Before quitting, try your best to make changes that will reduce stress and improve the project's manageablity with or without permission. Your work sounds so mission critical you could probably do whatever you want with no chance of getting fired.

Just be able to justify your action and communicate your decisions clearly. You'll start earning respect and that alone will reduce your stress levels. Standing up for yourself is hard to do at any age and "learned helplessness" is a concern if you don't push yourself.

Imagine if this headline read "Research on drunks' preference for aggressiveness and sobers' for politeness". Would anyone argue that nurture and societal norms is the reason drunks behave more aggressively ?

As someone who has been drunk on testosterone most of their life, I can testify it is a powerful and fun drug. Perhaps if research was framed in terms of hormonal differences rather than sex differences it wouldn't be as intrinsically controversial.

As much as I want to believe climate change can mitigated by individuals making conscientious decisions, it seems as naive as telling someone in 1970 that if they care about the smog then they can just buy a catalytic converter for their own car.

Climate change progress, like the catalytic converter, will be 1% innovation and 99% legislation. If you care about this problem please vote. Voting is arguably the most important action you can take.

A "startup" typically implies hyper-growth. That means raising money, hiring, and motivating the team to execute quickly, all of which is easier with the right vision/idea.

If you were a VC or a prospective employee deciding between many companies wouldn't the "idea" be the first filter you use ?

"To enroll, brands need to provide a government-registered trademark number."

I had heard some US sellers get a trademark from a foreign country since the process is often faster and they can then enroll in Brand Registry sooner. But does anyone know if you register with a non-US trademark, can you then still sell that brand in Amazon's US market ? Or is it only the region/country that issued the trademark ?

"it is not very good at explaining the process it has gone through to reach such a conclusion".

The above statement is just too convenient and practically superstitious.

AI is data hungry. That implies that there are so many past incidences of corruption you can generate large training data sets. So perhaps even a random guess would be too efficient since it is right more often than not.

On our current trajectory, "who pays" isn't the most pressing issue. Suppose Medicare for All does save 10% as the article claims, if the cost just keeps rising then it only buys a little more time before no entity can foot the bill.

100 million people in the US have diabetes or pre-diabetes according to the CDC.[1] Diabetes costs $14,000/yr(?) and people are getting it at an earlier age and living longer. Of all the threats to the US, this one is particularly insidious.

There is also the concern that big pharma (along with big-sugar/corn) has too much influence over congress. The U.S. is the only country besides NZ to allow direct to consumer drug advertisement. That fact alone makes me lose faith in the government. Is it prudent to give more power and money to our government when they appear to be complicit and bereft of root cause solutions to address the rising cost ? Bloomberg, as NYC's mayor, seemed like the only politician who was willing to pass unpopular and extreme legislation by way of banning or limiting certain foods.

It's not a talk, but worth a mention. Joe Rogan interviews Matthew Walker, a Professor of Neuroscience and Psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, and Founder and Director of the Center for Human Sleep Science and author of the book "Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams".

The human mind is susceptible to priming. When I read the SciAm article earlier this week I was sure I read "200 Billion" since that is what I was expecting. But upon reading the conclusion that number made no sense and I swear the B magically became an M.

Somewhat off topic comment, but in 2003, Bill Bryson's book "History of Everything" states that anthropogenic CO2 output is 7billion metric tons per year where natural CO2 output is 200 billion metric tons a year (mostly volcanoes IIRC)[0]. It left me with the impression, that an additional 3% a year is small and we have time before this becomes a crisis. For the record, Scientific American calls Bill Bryson "A Champion of Science".

Then when climate change appeared to accelerate, I assumed that it must because we are removing our carbon sinks and that deforestation is likely the more dominant cause than our +3% additional emissions.

Earlier this week, I revisited the above figure and according to Scientific American: "the world’s volcanoes, both on land and undersea, generate about 200 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) annually, while our automotive and industrial activities cause some 24 billion tons of CO2 emissions every year worldwide." [1]

At 3% I can see how a climate change skeptic might feel this issue is alarmist. But if it is 12,000% I don't see how anyone could honestly be skeptical that global warming isn't being caused by humans.

It is mind boggling that two authoritative sources could differ by 3000X. Any clarifying comments are appreciated.

It is a pity the human mind can become a dark abyss.

Be careful indulging thoughts of revenge. They will subside with time, but then decades later you find yourself in a dark place again and all those re-enforced feelings will bubble up again.

Thoughts of revenge are detrimental to success. You aren't guaranteed to be successful no matter how hard you try, but you certainly can't be successful if you ruminate on revenge.

Please if you own a gun, then find a friend with a safe and give it to them. Liquidate all your cryptocurrency so you don't hire a hitman. Don't let this brief period destroy your entire future.

There are people whose children were murdered in front of them by a Nazi soldier and never got "violent revenge" and went on to live fulfilling honorable lives. Is your injustice anywhere near as bad ? Please find the strength to find a way to get through this without resorting to violence.

By that argument I should be paying the state of Arizona a portion of this windfall because that is where it started. But as soon as it became profitable I moved to CA. I paid CA every year on our profits, payroll taxes, and sales taxes. It was mutually beneficial and CA collected plenty of taxes.

I'd also agree with you if I were moving to NV to avoid taxes. But that is not the reason as I explained in my post.

My upstairs neighbor with a nicer floor plan pays $900 a month, gets 2 parking spaces in the back lot AND a garage. I get no parking spaces, let alone a garage and pay $1900 a month. They have been in the apartment for a long time and I moved in 6 months ago.

It takes mental effort to not think about the imbalance. It wears you down. It is the most likely reason I would leave the Bay Area even though I can afford the rent.

After reading, it does seem like a megayacht is an overall safe place to work.

In contrast as a teenager I worked the register at a convenience store in NYC for less than minimum wage selling cigarettes and lottery tickets to the poorest people in the city. At the time "convenience store clerk" was the most deadly job in the US and I really thought I wouldn't live to be an adult. There was also an 11 year old boy who was employed at that store for 25% of minimum wage (not a typo). The boy worked from 5AM to 7PM on Saturdays and was kept in the basement where he used a razor blade to prep magazines and newspapers that didn't sell.

If you had given any of us a chance to work on a yacht, cross the Atlantic, and leave with a few $Ks in savings, we would have taken it even if the survival rate was 50%. And especially if people would still be writing about our deaths years later. Even now, I doubt the death of a convenience store clerk would make the local news.

"there's no way I'll ever be able to afford a home".

That's how I felt in 2007 but in 2012 many of those homes were then selling for 30cents on the dollar.

I am not saying that 2018 feels like 2007 (or maybe...), but your are only 27 so there are likely a few 2007s that will occur in your lifetime.
