As a founder the biggest turn off for me is the fact that you cannot take on more than 500 non accredited investors. As soon you exceed that number and rake up $25M in assets you will be forced to go public, which is absolutely bonkers.

Now to me equity crowdfunding is inherently powerful that you can make investments as little as $100. This dramatically lowers the risk, and makes it a small gamble for small time investors. But as an entrepreneur with a max of 500 investors you end up with a mere $50k, which almost defeats the effort for most startups.

You are discounting the power of small investors. There is a good chance that your unaccredited investors altogether will cast a larger network than your VCs. Also if done right they could become super fans and the best possible promoters of your product. They definitely bring something to the table, but it will be somewhat different than what you'd expect from a YC.

What are some good strategies you guys used to narrow and improve your messaging for your crowdfunding campaigns?

Did you rely on qualitative feedback (by real people or usertesting) or on quantitative results (A/B conversions testing on ad copies and landing pages)? Or did you just go with your gut?

For those of you that did Kickstarter and not Indiegogo or a selfstarter (Celery/Tilt/Shopify) campaign:

How happy were you with the experience so far? There are a few up and downsides as drabie had mentioned before.

Taking all of that into account, would you use Kickstarter again if you had the choice again?

Interesting.

1- Was there a reason why you chose not to use a promo video? 2- What has been main driver in sales so far? Like what was the split between PR, Email List and Ads? Any other channels? 3- Why Shopify over Celery/Tilt then? Did it give you more control over the experience?

Sorry lots of questions. We are currently deciding between selfstarter vs crowdfunding.

Hey Martin from ShapeScale (S15) here.

Did any of you attempt any influencer marketing? (celebrities or connectors on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat)

If so, how well did it work and did you pay them (if so what was the model, commission, or up-front payment). Would you do it again?

Shape (YC S15) | San Francisco Bay Area (currently Mountain View, may change) | ONSITE | FULL TIME | Computer Vision and 3D Imaging Engineer (potentially co-founder) | http://www.shapescale.com

We are working on ShapeScale (not launched yet), a scale that scans your body in 3D so that you can visually see and track where you lose fat and gain muscle.

Our mission is to become the personal trainer for your home by providing better feedback and information of how you can achieve the body of your dreams.

We are still relatively early, just went through YC S15 and are prepping for our launch early next year. We are looking for someone who is excited by what we are trying to achieve and wants to become team member #3.

You should have a background in computer vision and ideally in 3D imaging so that you can assist us with registration, rejigging, and other algorithms of captured 3D body shapes.

If you can fill gaps beyond just that and show an entrepreneurial mindset we may also consider you our 3rd co-founder.

Competitive + meaningful equity.

Wow, that's some great research there. We are actually building a scale for consumers that will allow for body scans in 3D. We hope then to also later integrate morphing algorithms so that you can see how your body would transform if you were to gain extra muscles and fat. Potentially big data could also help.

As for the visceral fat, it's indeed there, but an MRI could probably help off-set such, if you wanted to have a high level of accuracy.

For most I believe outside fat will be most important.
