Being born in a third world country playing soccer on the street with the kids and being poor and now living in Europe, I barely see any change other than I need to live with disgusting people more frequently. This $250k/year life is quite boring, you are the company you work for. I grew up thinking about being great at software, have a lot of friends, this and that, not that I have to make more money than my friends(I make like 100x of the people I was born and lived most of my life with, but it makes no difference). I actually want to maybe help they also to get it. As we are healthy and productive citizens, it is up to us to help who are behind or maybe just need somebody to talk to, or a laugh.

Every raise I get, the less fun people I get to live/work with. I've been fighting against this trend for a while already and my life has been getting much better. It isn't saying that I don't wan t to succeed, but that success for me in my profession has changed. For instance, I would rather have impact(could be in a political party or a movement/be a good husband/good friend etc). Or speak another language(already got a few) etc.

For a lot of things in life we plot graphs. Your software might do it transparently to you, but how it works internally is using mathematical concepts. It is good to know it and I really enjoyed learning it at college, as it opens your mind about how things work. But I don't believe it is a must to know.

Extensibility is just as important as Bugfree software for some businesses. Actually, for most of them.

Technical debt hurts much more the extensibility of your code rather than raises the number of bugs.

You didn't talk about your personal life, but I think you should focus on it. Work is a great enabler, with a good enough salary you can afford to do very exciting things when you are not at work.

And when you are at work, you can try to shape your craft, go to a few conferences, try to get something new to your brain.

Also, enjoy life. The endless search for something better will never end and it is one of your best qualities, but don't let yourself, your body and soul suffer and suppress that by letting it make you depressed.

I was kind of like you, then I found a wife, moved abroad, still work with the same stuff as before, but having to adapt to different contexts, culture and language made me grow a lot personally and also I believe in my job. Maybe consider that. If you are American and know those things, hell, even from a third world country(like I was), you can definitely find a job abroad that will give enough problems to solve(immigration is hard) that will keep you busy for a few years...

Maybe consider saving enough money in order to buy a property over there before moving, that will greatly help you. Other than that, just move there.

If you do that, your cost of living will be lower and in Canada you will have access to good healthcare, education and maybe to enjoy things again which doesn't imply monetary property. I'm pretty sure that overall, you'll have happier and more educated kids. I can imagine the kind of monsters people grow in the USA.

I live in Germany and we have many points like Canada and I just laugh when I hear about "could make more money elsewhere" or "career" in America when life is much softer and nicer here. Sure, things aren't perfect here, but at least people in general care about the environment and the personal space of others, I can easily get a lot of vegetarian/vegan food in Berlin and people are just awesome, many of them, from the US and sick of the state of art country you've got there. If you don't care about this and is a psycho which just want to maximize how much you make and then die, just stay in the US. It is a good place for you to be.

If I had the chance to pick living in the USA or in a first developed country, somewhat decent living conditions and economy. I would definitely pick the second choice.

I seriously wouldn't feel like living in a the same country of Trump, or just the average american mindset. It just looks pretty retarded to me. It's a economy that only exists because it manages to really impose its power around the world, so americans there feel like they got something, but it's always in exchange of somebodys life or happiness. I'm not sure if I would like to tell my kids I'm this kind of person, or my family. I wouldn't feel happy for myself.

In Germany you can definitely get a job without a degree.

I've got married almost 3 years ago and didn't do anything apart from getting a company to do my party. No fb groups or anything, no regrets, it was perfect.

We also wrote a lot of stuff offline and talked about how we wanted it, but all the planning software and so on that exists makes me think that people are doing a lot of useless stuff.

We didn't even film it, had a photo session where like 2-3 pictures in the end we cared about. There's a lot of bullshit in the industry and it all makes it either more expensive or less special.

My mother and father filmed it, I believe that they've watched it like twice and whenever they tried to show me I just slept, it's boring as fuck and it's only very emotional, nice and cool when you are actually in the moment, at the time, with yourself. All the rest is just bullshit, it's about showing people on fb that you are married and so on, which is something I don't feel so comfortable to share because it's very personal.

I bet couples and people are different, but if I had to bikeshed even the color of the plants on the table or my wife did, it probably meant that we don't like each other that much. We just enjoyed the time and had a very nice moment together, from when we decided to marry, to the party and after.

Now as I'm getting older, I'm having my younger friends getting married and asking me this kind of stuff, but when I really dig them, some of them are getting married just so they don't split up... really... dunno. Hard to say.

As he has mentioned, knowing solidity can give you an edge in a company that wants to write ethereum contracts, but that generally means it isn't like a day job, you can also freelance for companies that wants it.

Don't consider his opinion about the success or not of ethereum, smart contracts are there to stay and even if you code in another platform in another SDK the basics will roughly be the same. But anyways, I believe ethereum will thrive, nobody actually said that Ethereum was scalable enough anyways, everybody knows its limitations but instead how about looking where it wants to be? :-)

Why should it? Is it really a good idea or perhaps you've done loads of Javascript, considers it an important feature and would like to see it there?

I've had this a few times with other programming languages, why doesn't it have guard clauses like erlang, or macros, or X and Y?

I think the reason is that the people who maintain a language got already plenty of work and you try hard to avoid 'Feature creep', meanwhile still satisfying most of the people who uses it(or not...).

You could as well implement the feature yourself, see if people like it.

But just as you've mentioned Java, I have to tell you something. Java took like a decade to implement lambdas(or more). They need to reach consensus, agree a lot of things. Implementing things is easy, agreeing is hard. Most of programming languages got a lot of people with very different interests.

There is a performance hit on having this feature in the compiling phase. It's yet another feature they will need to support. The work to handle this is a huuuge language such as java is absolutely huge, again, not so coding wise, but also the whole ecosystem. People would even have to update their books...

When I've got an offer to move to Germany and wanted to go there, my partner just did with me, even though she had to struggle a bit with the language to then find a job, she did it, now she's happy about it, just as she was we came here. And in the end, this can also go away, and you'll be stuck with your old town, no girlfriend and your poor choice.

If you don't do it and stay with her there and do what was your plans before, it's very likely that this will become a subject when you fight and this could be even worse, you would feel that this specific decision as dragged you down future-wise in life, getting you to blame her perhaps forever.

I know this can look individualistic. But seriously, there's special people everywhere, you could move in and find a new love, I don't know. I feel that if you are made for each other, you would like to be part of the plan of one another, or to respect and do the best to support the interest of your partner, as for instance, when you are married, you indeed got a contract which in case you get divorced, you get 50%, so even in economical terms it would be great to take decision to go wherever pays best for the couple. If my wife would get a good job and I could just stay at home and keep things tidy until I would also find one, I would definitely do it, why not? :-)

If you are an American living in Brazil, you didn't see too much of how it's to to be born there in a very poor family suffering all kinds of abuse as in less developed regions you barely got light or proper education. I didn't live exactly like this, but I too come from a poor background and could see this happening across the street. Many teachers on those regions barely got any education and it's hard to get smart people to move to those regions. There isn't much opportunity there. Things has been improving over time, but we need more than a century to get where other more developed regions(such as Sao Paulo) is right now.

Actually, it's so problematic that for instance, a big percentage of my circle, the one who had opportunities and took them, moved abroad, as soon as they could(like I did). The ones who end up staying in the country are the ones in need, that can't leave because they are stuck there, and the riches, which need to stay there because of their businesses. You do learn about brain drain there at school and it's a common topic, but given all the other big problems, it's not often talked about in the media.

Of course that there is a lot of people who enjoy living there, I did a lot too, but it's only possible if you don't get caught with the amount of shit happening right now. I don't have much intentions of coming back right now, but would definitely would like to help it once I'm in a certain life stage I can afford moving there to change things, so like many other Brazilians who move abroad.

BTW, it isn't the ruling elite that give out the good stuff there for free to other countries, it's actually our inability to get good trade deals, just because we are the bitches of the first-world, we take care of our forests to them, meanwhile we get nothing. My point is that if they want to pay cents for our bananas, sure, we still sell them, but we don't give a single fuck for whatever they say and instead focus on developing our country.

I'm not suggesting we replicate, but that we at least do whatever we want and need, instead of having needing to bend to the needs of what other agendas tells us to.

My point isn't only with forests, but also with everything else. And I'm not being populist, or nationalist, left-wing or right-wing... just being real. Once I've moved abroad and stopped living in Brazil, I started to understand how other countries and cultures, from the first world, are pretty much immune to this kind of debate, or are the ones setting up standards on how everybody else should behave and do things.

And how this feeds poverty and confusion... and in the very end, as counter-intuitive as it seems, damages the environment.

We need no fucking agendas to follow, if they aren't of our interest, it's not like we've got 50k+ dollars an year per capita in a very egalitarian society to start caring about this, at least to the degree that those who doesn't have any fucking forests anymore, cares. In the Capitalist world we live in today, managing a country it's about picking up the right battles, there isn't an infinite overflow of money coming in so we can both educate 200mi of brazilians, feed them, give them the good life and in the end, still be 100% green.

Sure thing, you can improve in many areas, having Brazil being less corrupt would work wonders, but this won't change overnight.

But policies and agendas, imposed from countries abroad, changes the mindset of everybody very fast.

I think it's a fair move. A lot of people around the world and organizations try to do anything on their hands to protect Brazil from using its own lands. Meanwhile all countries have devastated their own forests to build ships and make wars, people from Brazil are hungry and the country must grow to make the lives of all the human beings there good.

But no, instead we've got first world countries which give us always very shitty trade deals speaking about what we do with our own land, when they complete wrecked theirs. And if you check their energy solutions, it's always coal, or they all got cars, or anything. They've got their own problems, which are potentially even worse for the environment but they keep looking at a poor country, just as they did in the past, to perhaps steal gold, slave people, make money... They want us to follow their crappy and shitty agenda when they can't even get decent politicians, they get shitty ones as we do, they go on middle-east and make fucking wars everytime, killing millions. But no, we can't do whatever the fuck we want with our forests.

The sad part is that much of Brazil has succumbed to environmentalists from abroad. If those who complain about it would go to Brazil and try to live a middle-class life there with a job in shitty conditions going through a crisis every decade, always feeling things aren't stable enough to make a living. Perhaps living in a big city, taking 2-3 hours to go to work, then 2-3 hours to go back, I've bet that they wouldn't care too much about Amazon or whatever countries from abroad says... but they don't, they come from privileged backgrounds, sometimes they say that they know poverty, sure, everybody can look at a magazine, but did they ever feel it like they do in a country like Brazil?

I've grew up in a very poor neighbor in a third-world country called Brazil, which also got plenty of opportunities and is beautiful. I would argue that I've started rock bottom, but never hit it, by my choices, which sightly better as my whole life, things just improved.

My mom had me very early in life, perhaps 21. My dad worked very hard, I almost never saw him. Meanwhile he managed to get me in an average school and made sure I studied English, which at a time was gamble as not much people believe things would turn out that well for somebody so low-class. When I was around 10 I started making websites, from then and on, I made a bunch of money, studied computer science, worked in a few jobs and moved to Germany with 26. I've worked very hard to get here.

Nowadays I don't care so much about it, because while I succeeded, I saw how much people are left behind as most of it is about luck. There's a lot of people which had more effort than me but got less, just because they went in a not so good direction, for instance, humanities. And those people also deserve something. Everyone deserves a good life and I think it's better to try to defend those who are in need, rather than keep scaling things up forever, until I'm in the top of the world and thinking that I'm the best, when all I did was to neglect everyone.

Nowadays, even though I'm not a dad, I think it's more important being a great dad and partner(unlike Elon Musk) than being himself and being the CEO of multiple companies.

If people looked around before trying to move up, life wouldn't be hard for so many.
