We care a lot about QA, TDD and writing meaningful and effective tests. We aim to empower individuals and give them responsibility and the ability to make technical decisions.

In addition to pure engineering roles, we're looking for scrum masters, technical writers and more. Our founder is Stephan Schambach, founder of Intershop and Demandware (both of which he led to IPO). We’re well-funded and newly launched, so it’s a great time to join. We’ve got a good agile dev process and engineering infrastructure established, but there’s still lots of opportunity to make a difference!

Our office is in a beautiful historic power plant right by the Spree river in downtown Berlin. We foster continuing education, travel between the NewStore offices (including the one in the US), and we offer tasty, catered lunches three days a week.

Our interview process typically consists of a phone screen, a technical phone interview, and an extended on-site technical interview.

I have a feeling this is going to make the tetris effect much more extreme.

I've been entertaining the thought lately that all the work being done on photosharing sites and other "unworthy" commercial projects may qualify as basic research in the sense that the short-term benefits for society may be hard to see.

In contrast to traditional science, today, in computing, big ideas and inventions come from commercial applications, and then move into the public domain where they are often used for greater causes. For example, a new database may be invented at a hot photosharing startup, but graduates that particular application and becomes something that _could_ be used to fight cancer.

I find this technique works too. Come up with general ideas that describe your product, expand into metaphors. Try synonyms for the metaphors. Combine words.

In the end, the name doesn't have to be descriptive, but it does have to be unique and pronouncable.

Ikea sells a motorized version of their "Galant" desk for about 500 Euros. You can mount any kind of surface on it. I bought one 3 years ago, and it's great.

Yeah, "Switch account > Sign into another account" actually works, but it took me a long time to find it.

I also noticed that, in Germany, currently, the codes take several minutes to arrive by SMS, which is a bit of a downer when trying to check email.

It'd be nice if I could turn on two-factor auth in case i notice something fishy with my account. Basically, an emergency function that would sign out all sessions and raise the bar to get in once a user feels their account might be compromised.

I'm pretty sure I recently used a non-US credit card to pay for MTurk. They require you live in the US, but they don't seem to verify that.

I bought this in Germany two years ago and put my own surface on it. I like the flexibility of this setup, and the stand comes with a 10-year warranty.

I want a bank that feels like email. Set up subaccounts (folders), automatic filtering and forwarding of wired payments, custom-defined alerts, some kind of feed so I don't have to log into their site for everything. Y'know, exactly the kind of thing you'd expect online banking to be.

I find it sad that many restaurants are so bad at SEO, or maybe they just can't compete with Yelp and their spammier friends.

Often, it's nearly impossible to find the one authoritative website on a restaurant, bar, or store - the one owned by that business. Instead, search engine result pages tend to be dominated by crappy Yellow pages entries that may or may not include the correct phone number of the place, but never photos, the menu or the hours.

When I drink espresso, I usually feel the effect immediately. At least some of the caffeine must be resorbed in the mouth.
