Bingo! Wall St wants a monopoly on ALL your retirement funds. Your typical employer 401k plan offers only mutual funds run by Wall St. No investing in alternate assets such as real estate or crypto. The big boys get their cut AND make sure you are not crowding the field in lucrative investments.

What's super annoying is that Dell does not provide a BIOS option to switch between connected standby and S3. It's likely a cost saving decision because S3 is more complex to implement and having both options even more so. There are also some rumors that Dell may be under contractual agreement with MS to only support connected standby.

It seems to be a subtle critique of Google. I read it as Circle = Google, ad business where Mae works = AdWords, tablets = Android, zings = tweets / Google+ shares, new camera = Google Glass.

Interesting to see how companies sometimes have very similar looking apps across all or some platforms (Facebook), while others are at the opposite end and have completely different experiences (KickStarter).

In a few years we could have tri-band routers covering 2.4Ghz, 5Ghz and 60Ghz. Correlating the info from all these frequencies should provide a much better picture.

You conveniently forgot a key bottleneck: the amount of RAM on your server. That's what determines how many concurrent sessions you can keep running before performance degrades and you need to add another server.

Yes, because the value consultant charges more but also provides more. In addition to understanding the technical aspects, he also understands the business aspects and can speak the client's language (business goals) freeing the client from having to micro manage or go deep into the weeds of the tech nitty-gritty. Best of all, the value driven consultant knows what's truly important and can intelligently focus his technical efforts on those areas which provide the biggest payoff.

As others have stated elsewhere in this thread: there are people who are willing to pay you a lot of money so you can free up their time and let them focus on activities that generate a boatload more money than $10K. These are the people who will happily choose the $20K offer, and these are the people you want to work with.

I'll second this. The HackerX pitch is "Where developers meet startups" but all the partner companies shown in the logo section (namely eBay, Amazon, Groupon, Google, Disney, YouTube, Quora) are very much established companies, not startups.

There was another article recently about the awful DUNS # process for the App Store. You can find some good tips in the comments, including applying via the federal site and applying via Apple's form. Readers suggest both of these methods are faster.

I think it's way more than that. Once you're out of school, there is no one to set goals for you. Even assuming you do have goals, there are no structured classes or textbooks to get you to those goals with your eyes closed. You are essentially both the teacher and the pupil and you must figure out your own curriculum in addition to doing the learning.

I think Patrick largely answered this question in an email he sent to the mailing list back in October (Selling To The Fortune 500, Government, And Other Lovecraftian Horrors). Will forward you the email.

Getting the free DUNS number is awkward and awful even in the US. D&B calls you about 24 hours after you place your order and tries to sign you to a paid package (perhaps suggesting that the free DUNS is no good for the AppStore). Once you refuse they let you wait -- supposedly for 30 business days, but you can wait a lifetime since they don't bother contacting you again. The DUNS number gets silently issued after 30 business days with no phone call or email notification.

Agree 100%. Instead of an "idea" person, opt for a "business" person. A "business" person can do the idea person's job and several more. That means he can bring much more value to the table in a startup.

The ability to execute is not limited to engineering. It's also applicable to the business side (ability to successfully secure funding, find product market fit, create a marketing and pricing strategy that works, etc).

The other thing is that you cannot neatly separate ideas and execution. As you break a high level problem into its components, there are ideas at every lower level that will allow you to succeed. A high level idea cannot succeed without the supporting lower level ideas (strategies and tactics) in a variety of disciplines (marketing, product, engineering, etc). If we take Facebook as an example: many people at several universities had the broad idea, but only one set of people also had the lower level strategies and tactics to turn that idea into a multi-billion dollar company.

My take on this: good high level ideas are worthless without the appropriate low level supporting ideas.

There is a Wordpress plugin called Spam Free Wordpress that implements a variation of this and has effectively cut spam on my sites to zero.

The plugin improves on the method described by randomly generating the value of the additional token parameter, and keeping a list of all generated tokens. If the server receives a comment post request which does not contain one of the generated tokens, then that comment is guaranteed to be automated spam.
