Some of this can be automated. We’ve seen the result with the big companies though.

Facebook is the only way that a lot of local organizations advertise their events, so if I'm not on Facebook I don't hear about things. So I'm on Facebook and check it most days. No app,no notifications, though.

I also use LinkedIn for much the same reason. It is the main way some businesses in my local industry (including the one I work for) communicate.

My wife quit LinkedIn about 5 years ago when somebody used it to mine information to try to steal her paycheck... and it almost worked.

I use chatGPT a lot, professionally(software) and as a personal sounding board for potential career pivots, business and creative ideas, and my personal life.And I keep memory on, so it has a lot to draw from. I was impressed with the results. I can't say it came up with anything I didn't know, but what it did come up with was accurate and the reasoning gave me some things to think about.

I wonder how much of this is also due to either an unwillingness to live with someone or difficulty making friends? I know that where I live the rent on a 1 bedroom apartment would be difficult for most young people, but half of a 2 bedroom apartment would be do-able at minimum wage. For reference, I am thinking 1500 and 1800 per month respectively for rent on 1 and 2 bedroom apartments, which seems to be the going rate locally for a decent but not luxury place.And local minimum wage is 15 an hour

It is very convienent. It gets unclear when people try to substitute it 1-1 for he or she in situations when the number of people is unknown.

Completely hypothetical... two ways this could happen and not be "forced". One, as you said the minority gender could be stronger "on average". Which could happen if the reason why the applicant pool is skewed is historic discrimination. This could discourage all but the stronger applicants from the minority gender. The top X% of the applicant pool would then be evenly distributed, while the bottom portion of the applicant pool is weighted towards the majority.

Applicants are not applying to only 1 location. If other companies have discriminatory hiring practices (whether intentional or not) but this company doesn't, then the applicants that accept an offer could skew more towards the minority group (since the majority group was more likely to get a higher paying offer or any offer at all).

Not going to defend Carvana... but most people trust used car dealers about as far as they can throw a full size pickup.

Most of the problems with Carvana are the same problems you get at any used car dealer, just magnified by scale. All of the title/registration problems. Financing. Availability. Communication. No better or worse than any random dealer.

My first car ever (25+ years ago) I received the wrong plate from the dealer. My dad and I noticed it and ran back to the dealer a day or two later. Good thing they didn't give away the plate they were supposed to give us.

Perhaps the self-interest in this case is "managing expectations".

If they tell everybody to prepare for a 20 percent drop but the market falls 10 percent, then everybody feels good about themselves and Blackrock.

If they tell people to expect flat markets but instead get the same 10 percent drop, then people panic. They withdraw their money. Move to a new broker. Because obviously Blackrock wasn't prepared for this. Or stuff it in a mattress. Because obviously something unexpectedly bad is happening.

Not the OP, but oddly enough I ordered this book this morning before I saw this thread. Looking forward to reading it. 20 years ago when I graduated undergrad I had to make a decision... software job or math graduate school. I chose software job.

Should that always be the case, though? We could try to force a position where 2 separate moves checkmate. Then only 1 (presumably the one that results from capturing the highest valued piece?) would be the engine result.

When I was on a project that used Mattermost we had BigBlueButton integrated. It worked adequate. As a user, at first I didn’t even realize that BBB was a separate thing.

My wife works as a junior accounting clerk in the finance department of a small-medium (500-ish person) company. She has to reconcile credit cards each month. Yes, it takes days when there are poorly documented charges (federal contractor so all of these charges have to be documented to bill to a contract).

Down to the penny. Two months ago my wife spent half a day tracking down a 2 cent discrepancy when somebody's handwritten 7 looked like a 9.

I work for a government contractor and I need approval for basically everything, regardless of price. Monthly expenses just make more work for us, so yearly is virtually required.

If you or I made it, it would likely be good. Although I don't eat as many vegan meals as I should, I enjoy them. At "school food" quality, probably not so much.

If the study were asking for distance instead of steps, then taller people will naturally go further in fewer steps. But, at least according to these studies, it is the act of stepping that improves health and not traveling distance.

At one point I had an 18 month gap. I dealt with it my applying to jobs which were almost an exact match to jobs I had done before. They asked me more about those jobs than about my gap.

Pretend I want to learn web development. I have been doing desktop programming and data analysis for many years, so I know all about programming but nothing about how a web-app works.

I would be looking for something that explained web apps assuming I know little to nothing about them, but not "how to program" because I don't want to sit through learning about loops or variables.

And pretend I'm also the type of person that wants concepts and not just tutorials.

I didn't learn to ride a bike until I was 39. Motivation was that I had just taught my oldest daughter to ride and I wanted to be able to go out with her. Also proving that yes, it is possible to teach people things you have never done yourself.

I picked up a cheap hybrid bike (about $250) from Dicks Sporting Goods and just started putzing around the backyard until I felt confident enough to go out on asphalt. Took a week or two, then I was out cruising the neighborhood.

I don't consider myself good at all, but now I know how to do it.
