not in the US. We have the takings clause

As a progressive - importing indentured servants to displace the American working and middle class is awful and revolting to watch.
someone's read their James Burnham!
These are good points. I think a compelling argument can be made towards the admixture of the best and brightest with the daughters and sons of the rich and famous. Net net, I think that the opportunities provided to the best and brightest from exposure to, and friendship with the offspring of the spectacularly rich is why schools and network spun out of Harvard have generated such an effective flywheel effect over the generations. Granting access and pedigree to society's elite by a school isn't purely a vocational exercise - and the social element is why the Ivies and Oxbridge have thrived so spectacularly.
extremely well written.
The company that by far does this the best is Stripe. They even have an in house press (Stripe Press) to publish out of print / small runs of books the Collision bros particularly like.
You're confusing income tax liabilities with corporate taxes
Moreover, while achieving a sub-10% body fat is achievable (see bodybuilding weigh-ins), it KILLS libido, energy, and general vitality / well-being.
Not to support A16 - but this reads as classic PR/SEO for the extensively quoted “CEO”. Below the quality of what I expect on HN
I'm sincerely curious as to what long-term health outcomes you ascribe to environmental contaminants in the food and air. Could you elaborate?
By what metrics is NYC doing "great"? The amount of crime and visible urban decay/blight seems just as pronounced (in Lower Manhattan) as it does in San Francisco
I would recommend anyone interested in Haiti's revolutionary history to read CLR James' 'The Black Jacobins'.
Theirs is the only successful and durable slave revolt in history and an incredible story.
Agreed! And to color your recommendation - SubZero is famous for using dual compressors (vs. the traditional single), which better circulates & chills air.
yes.
good to see some other civcraft alumni on HN. What an experience...
How did you enjoy Harvard's extension school?
Would you mind unpacking what you see as your addiction to 4chan? Are there specific boards you frequent? As an infrequent reader of /fit/ and /biz/, I'm having trouble wrapping my head around your experience.
The Economist is quite simply the best news magazine in existence. Imperfect but the least bad. Foreign Affairs is entirely an entirely different publication made of collections of topical essays on foreign policy
how much counterparty risk does the rapid price fluctuation result in? Can't imagine pricing a contract in bitcoin, as someone's getting screwed at payment if the BTC/fiat rate has changed during the lifetime of the contract
my absolute personal favorites are the New York Review of Books and the London Review of Books. Less magazines, more papers - of long form literary and cultural essays on eclectic topics.
SV is a crazy bubble to be in. Scroll through the very average 'middle class' $3M+ homes in Menlo Park / Palo Alto to get a sense of how distorted things are here
there are loads of these folks in VC. Anyone who went to an ivy/stanford/MIT, worked in banking for 2 years, and now is at a VC by definition isn't a contrarian. Contrarianism bears out in life decisions - not a faux intellectual attitude
HFT firms aren't trying to predict "the market" as a whole - just small eddies of it. A typical example of this is arbing names at the bottom of index fund rebalances. Speed is important mostly to make sure someone else doesn't hit the arb first.
Comments like this are why I love HN. Will order.
I don't think that 'should' is the best lens through which to view this. The better question is, would offsite talent (at or above the quality of onsite talent) be willing to do the job for less. I would hazard a yes to that because of the drastic difference in savings rate in low CoL areas. E.g. would be willing to make 30% less to live in a CoL area where your CoL is 40% less? If the delta in CoL exceeds the delta in pay change, I bet this takes off.
Happy to share! I have quite a few of both the LoA & Everyman's, and prefer Everyman's. They're IMO the best quality books in print.
In this vein, ‘The Everyman’s Library’ collection excellently assembles classics on thick acid-free paper, cloth bindings, and essays introducing/contextualizing the work
I would imagine there's a strong causal link between competence and being "dressed-to-the-nines"/"very sharp". Maybe signals of fitness and fitness here are to an extent the same thing.
I would recommend those interested in an international perspective on this to watch the below debate at the Oxford Union, which deals with class at Oxford.
Excellent resource.
