Spring of a decade plus ago was fine, it just required a day or two of upstart to configure the whole deal if you weren’t already familiar and had a good project to reference as a basis for bootstrapping.

The tradeoff of today with Spring Boot is you might get bitten down the line with a little configuration mystery, although it’s such a well-blazed path you’re probably in good company and will find your error solved and documented.

In addition, it’s Java so virtually any serious task is done in a well-blazed fashion with numerous open-source options available. In contrast my Node library I used to generate and validate an XML document at work last month cannot read in its own XML output. It’s a boon for efficiency.

The only downside Java really has is that it’s a bit harder to “hack on” a dynamic, evolving JSON structure so it may be a bad fit for organizational reasons if your company lacks a cohesive, mature Engineering staff.

I’ve seen cases over the years where doctors irreparably maim a patient requiring a lifetime of expensive professional services and home care, are set a fair judgement meant to cover these costs, but then skip out due to maximums set in law thereby hosing the victim.

Much like other commenters in the thread, I’ve had a man threaten to “cut my mother effing throat” in broad daylight in front of a dozen bystanders. Police showed up 45 minutes later and were of no use, so why bother reported the three times I’ve had guns pointed at me in traffic since 2020?

When police response times are at or above the hour mark and the best you’ll get is an “oh that sucks man, need a report for insurance?” people stop reporting crimes. Now the politicians get to pretend crime is “better”.

Spent 12 years in “the City,” in Charleston, SC to be exact. Watched it go from “hidden gem” to “how much more Carpetbagger can we take.” Mixed blessing there, sold our meager home for a lot more than it should have been worth and moved to the mountains. No more getting cut off every other stop light. No more pistols brandished in traffic. No more “oh wow our across-the-creek neighbor had a home invasion.” All in all, seems with a certain level of density people just lose their mind and sense of decency. All those whacky stories you’d hear growing up about senselessness on the streets of a true city like LA or New York.

It may sound stupid in hindsight, but I grew up in a small coastal town of about 10,000 and growing up going to college and then a city for work was “the path” - it never occurred to me that maybe not everyone is built for a city, big or small. I’m not all that interested in the nightlife beyond the couple years I spent going out as a young adult. There really isn’t anything interesting about that $20 cheeseburger with an “aioli” on it. I’ve seen the couple of bands live that I wanted to.
