The room of my house that I use as an office did not receive much sunlight from the window that faces a brick wall. I recently had a skylight installed and wow, it's been life changing. I don't even need a light on anymore during the day. I highly recommend installing a skylight to add more natural light to a room if it's possible.

I'm a web dev by day so playing around with Unity has been really fun. Having to consider time, i.e. what does everything like at time t=0, t=1, etc., adds a new dimension I don't get it my day job.

It's not programming but playing around with Blender has been really fun too.

It most certainly is.

I worked at Wal-Mart in Canada for seven years when I was younger and during the summer, when I worked more hours, I would see the department managers and the upper level store managers do it every morning during the week. Wal-mart really pushes the idea of winning. Everything is about being the best at generating profit and beating the local competition into submission. The location I worked at completely destroyed a Zellers, Eatons, Bi-Way and possibly others that I'm forgetting.

I worked in the electronics department and my manager had the discretion to price big new movie releases below the competition (he would actually check out the competition himself). We had a line that snaked through the entire store for days when Titanic came out since we had the best price for a large radius. Having the best price on an item would be something that would be mentioned during the morning meeting and would be something everyone in attendance would get excited about.

I tried enabling this recently and I immediately noticed that websites started appearing in light mode instead of copying my system settings and displaying in dark mode. It seems like in it's efforts to make my fingerprint the same as everyone else's Firefox stops telling websites about my display settings. The issue immediately went away when I changed the setting back to privacy.resistFingerprinting = false.

This has been the trend lately for games that are multiplatform.

It's better than making 100M copies that contain the PC version, 100M copies that contain the Xbox version, etc. and then having them sell at different rates and having 3-5 different SKUs.

Last.fm turns 20 4 years ago

Last.fm has a special place in my life since I actually met someone I was quite fond of through the site. I kept seeing her profile pop up as someone with similar musical tastes. I noticed we lived in the same city so I sent her a message. We corresponded back and forth for awhile, eventually met and then dated for a few months.

My friends and I have had a LAN party every year for the last 20+ years. Usually around Christmas or early the following year.

Since the pandemic hit we moved them to be online over Discord and I'd say that they've been just as fun as the in person ones. There are obviously pros and cons but given we're all much older now and many people have moved away I doubt we'll ever have an in person LAN again.

This is very interesting to hear. In 2014, my wife and I went on a vacation in Germany and I found that it was cheaper and more convenient to rent a car than it was to use trains as we've typically done countries like Italy and France for our vacations. I chalked it up to Germans being a big fan of cars.

Using --i-am-a-dummy is the best recommendation:

  root@localhost [main]> update user set password = 'abc123';
ERROR 1175 (HY000): You are using safe update mode and you tried to update a table without a WHERE that uses a KEY column.

You've probably never needed to work with really large files or edit/examine a fie in HEX, it really shines for these use cases.

It's not really an IDE and I've never used it to write code.

Such a misleading article, the meat producers and processors are maximizing their use of the product to ensure there's minimal waste, that's basic economics.

If I'm looking to make chicken stock, I have to call up my local butcher before going there to make sure they haven't processed all of their chicken spines into dog food...

I thought about this as well but reality TV shows are still enough of a spectacle that it's clear that big money is involved.

Survivor placed the contestants on an island competing in elaborate challenges with camera's everywhere for a million dollar prize.

The Bachelor featured a wealthy suitor/suitress and a dozen attractive people of the opposite sex dressed in ridiculously expensive clothing again with camera's everywhere doing extravagant things.

Anyone can end up on YouTube, only certain people can end up on TV and viewers always have this in the back of their minds.
