This is super important - I've run a number of 'oversized' instances just to get better networking. AFAIK none of the cloud providers offer a way to create a 'network' optimized instance, though containerized deployments should help with under utilizing the rest of the instance.

Lots of research here, but the most interesting part is their distributed graph approach. Scaling up CF is a challenging problem, and the current open source implementations have problems at really large scales.

I hope they open source their Giraph implementation, or at least part of it.

Housing is getting expensive, but most Cost of Living indexes put NYC/SF 30%+ higher than Toronto proper, and areas around Toronto are still somewhat affordable.

Snapshops / backups with MVCC isn't that complicated - you take a snapshot of the versions, and then backup the data at that version.

Is there an equivalent or similar metric for non-subscription commerce sites? I operate one, and I'm struggling to find good references on the best way to determine I've 'lost' a customer.

There's two ways to do it:

1) Go simple - affiliate fees in ecommerce range from 4-8%. Pick a number you're comfortable with and use that.

2) Do the math - estimate their revenue per year/month/week, do a Net Present Value calculation, using a discount rate based on the fact you're getting paid over time, and the fact that you may never get paid. Divide your quote for option A by the NPV, and that's your % to ask for.

It should be a % of their gross, not their net. Don't make the mistake of letting their profit margin determine how much you get paid.
