Being just a grunt engineer in a product firm I can't imagine being able to spend multiple years on one project. If it's something you're passionate about, that sounds like a dream!

Because LLMs works like how system 1 does, with heuristics such as pattern matching, frequency heuristics, etc. The fall back to coding stuff works not because it's doing system 2, it's because there are many instances of system 2 thinking for this particular problem done by humans so that the instances can be found using the heuristics.

I agree. As an engineer the recent layoffs in hindsight felt inevitable because I was working with product managers whose careers rely on them shipping new features every quarter even when customers stopped caring about them years ago (they care about paying less for the main functionality). Now it is us who feels the pressure of having to decrease infra costs while still maintaining support for features when even the PM has left for better pastures.

Thanks for the answer. I honestly don't know about the photo thing. LinkedIn itself has a photo of the person and I would assume companies at least check a candidate's linkedin profile in which case they will see the photo of the candidate. Some companies also look at your social media presence which also has your photo.

I think this write up is a good resource for those who got called into at least an interview. I wonder how does one improve if the rejections come even before a single interview? At that stage companies typically will not give you any reason for the rejection either for legal reasons or simply convenience. This leaves you hesitating whether to apply to other companies for fear they will reject you for the same unknown reason.

Maybe someone who has been in the other side of equation can explain, what are the common reasons would get someone discarded before an interview and is there really no way to communicate those better to the rejectee?

By working continuously for more than 24 hours. I'm Indonesian and there are stories of polling places running from 7am to 9am the next day, not counting the hours they spent setting up the polls.

The main reason it became so grueling is that we held simultaneous elections for president, congress, and provincial representatives this year. We learned our lesson and won't be doing them simultaneously next time around.

A possible counterpoint to that is that walking away from people has a price and it may not be easy to find people who accept you for who you are - especially if you perceive the more disagreeable side of yourself to be the more authentic.

Yes if you be yourself you might feel better, but you might lose out on friends, on a great job, on a marriage even. At the end of the day those people who regret not being themselves may not properly account for the things they wouldnt have if they had been.

A fair valuation may not be the same as market valuation since you can always bid for a stock high if there's a greater fool to buy it off you. This is what bubbles are made of - and once the music stops valuations will return to the fair valuation derived from multiples of revenue or asset values.

If food deliveries are made using the same driver fleet as the transport business then it is actually essential to squeeze more revenue per driver hours. Having the fleet there only to serve transport is inefficient because driver time is fungible between the businesses.

I shouldn't think so. Early in my career I work in some consulting company that prides themselves for working their engineers until late at night. Never again. A real strategic advantage would trump hard work every time.

When people with equity asks regular employees with salaries to work their ass off unsustainably it is just very insensitive to the inherent difference between them.

If owners and top executives were doing an amazing job directing the company then front line employees would not even have to work that hard because the company already has a strategic advantage.
