Simple prepared foods that ease food entry: Those two could be solved in a deterministic way, and we'd be happy for a separate Open Food Facts hosted API endpoint (basically a small backend serving a combination of all national generic databases), or improvement to the core software 3. Restaurant foods - Open Prices (our effort to collect geo-located prices on products) could be an entry point to collect menus, and potentially estimate nutrition for food in restaurants, since we have support for products without barcode. 4. We need a modern opensource barcode reader. The best thing (zxing) is in maintenance mode, and the newer barcode scanners with niceties like neural scan, 90% scan, bortched barcode scan are all closed source.

No, no worries about personal consumption. What the OdBL requires you to do is to add missing products. Not add data outside the scope of the original database. (I'm a Open Food Facts admin)

Also please don't scrape us, since we release nightly dumps of the DB :)

Open Food Facts ranks all products from A to E, using the French Nutriscore. It helps you compare products within a category, and get a general sense of how bad the product is, nutrition wise.

You're in luck, we've just imported 175K Open Data products from the USDA, so it now works in the US :-)

Also it's collaborative, so please take pictures as you scan products :)

We already have apps (Cordova) and we're doing efforts to redevelop in native on each platform (all is volunteer word).

We've long wanted to create a small game/gamification app to have people make more complex contributions than taking pictures.

lthough Open Food Facts went from 100k to 300k products in just a few months, indexing all the food in the world proves to be a sizeable challenge: there are still millions of products not yet indexed all over the world.

As a result, we decided to focus on a task easier to achieve: Pet Food. And while we love all pets equally, in order to make our objective reachable, we have to focus only on one kind of pet: dogs, or cats or birds, etc.

But the good news is that you get to decide which pet that is, by participating in our worldwide competition:

More seriously, Open Food Facts is a mobile crowdsourcing effort, and we have volunteers from all the planet :-)

Open Food Facts is trying to create massive amounts of open data on all products sold. It's only a part of the puzzle, but we've already seen journalists and nutritionists leverage data to do better science or reporting.
