Aligning a model is the biggest challenge of these companies, it's unlikely they were able to make a giant leap in alignment capabilities in about a month. You know what is easy to do in a month? Establishing the foundation for digital identity and surveillance.

The government just forced (heavily incentivized) these companies to invest in classifiers and monitoring in a way they haven't needed before. All of this new infrastructure can be used outside the context of the people using language models.

Because willingly throwing away your safety from the government and the oligarchs for a tale as old as time, "think of the kids", is irrational to say the least.

Stop listening to advice so much and learn to cultivate a life of curiosity, failure, and iteration. Advice from others suffers from the inevitable ambiguity of language. Too much advice is given by people who themselves do not fully understand their situation and how they got where they are.

Take everything with a grain of salt and prioritize the building of your own inner understanding of your situation. It's just like the scientific method: make a hypothesis, control vars, test, analyze and repeat. It takes time but you will arrive where you want to go.

I understand it as the effect of new technology. The internet was still very new in 2000 and we've all witnessed its potential expand into what it is today.

New technology creates new and ripe frontiers. What new technology exists today that unlocked something for the human race? You'll find the opportunities there.

Just want to chime in and say there's nothing wrong with finding excitement in doing something unique. That drive inside of you has taken people very far I'd imagine, with the obvious tradeoffs.

Don't give up on tech and keep an open mind. It's true that flying drones are not exciting to you, but flying a drone could be a first step in finding something more interesting to do with drones.

Boredom is functional. It can be a guide towards more interesting things so as long as you don't let it run the show. Tolerate it and follow (intelligently) where it takes you, don't avoid it.

I don't know how helpful this will be to you, but it bothered me to see people dismiss your interest because you value doing something unique. Those same judgements held me back for years.

I think we all need to keep in mind that social media can also be a refuge for those struggling mentally. Correlation can not imply causation.

It's 2020 and I still see this "churn in frontend web frameworks" mentioned. I don't see how this is true anymore. The churn was very real in the early 2010s, but these days almost all web development is done in React [1]. If not React, it's either Vue, Angular, and Ember. I'm sure there are a lot of niche frameworks out there that are in use, but that's not what churn means. As a web developer you can learn React once and never have to pick up another framework again pretty easily.

Not to mention that at this point the complexity of web development isn't exclusively held within your framework choice. Thinking about global state, eventing, and architecting your project are where the real hard problems are.

I'll admit I haven't necessarily changed my coding practices directly based on posts like this, but they do help me formalize the things I've learned in my own experience.

It's really unfortunate to see downvotes for this. The belief in reverse racism in America is pretty widespread and I imagine we'll eventually see people understand what it means to say it doesn't exist.

The rejection of reserve racism isn't a reaction based on anger like "they hurt me first and more so I can hurt them." That's not what this is about. It's about not minimizing the prejudice black people suffer from every day by comparing it to having to send a picture of your black skin to be a mod in the subreddit mentioned above.

It's about understanding that racism is NOT just an instance of prejudice against someone based on color. It's the entire fucking system and culture we have in America that oppresses black people. It's about the system of power and authority that oppresses black people. When we reserve the word racism for this it follows that it's ridiculous to believe in reverse racism. There is no system that oppresses white people in America. It does not exist.

Is it shitty to be treated differently because your skin is white? Of course. It sucks and it's your right to feel hurt by it, but don't call it racism. Prejudice yes, racism no. Why is this distinction important? Again, because the instances of racism that white people complain about simply do not compare to what black people go through. Using the same word for these things minimizes what black people go through every god damn day.

Maybe I'm wrong but I think self-negotiation here means: when I put my dishes away after dinner, I attempt to negotiate with myself if I have to do it right now. A habit instead terminates this attempt at negotiating and gets you to just do it without thinking if you should or shouldn't.

You're taking that one line out of context in his post. Yes of course the brain is special because it's the only organ that makes you, you. Just like the heart is special because it's the only major organ that if you removed, blood would stop flowing.
