In my opinion, it's less about the amount and more about setting an example that this is something that moral companies should be doing.

My startup sponsors 25 projects/developers on Github [0], curl including, and none of them with a significant amount of money. However, if majority of companies that use OSS were to do so, the amount of funding would suddenly be a game-changer for almost all of these projects.

Europe has quite a few high-quality, high-speed rail connections. If I may suggest a feature, in order for the tool is to be faithful to its mission, alternative mods of transport could be supported as well.

Personally, I am more than happy to take an overnight train than a short-flight, given the additional overhead of travelling to/from the airport. An overnight train can take you pretty far within continental Europe.

Nice idea! Couple of bugs I came across during my game:

* an age-restricted video can show up (I am not logged-in to YouTube)

* a video is not guaranteed to actually have lyrics. Ony of my songs was a "danish" fully instrumental anime soundtrack

For workloads where the image size was critical, I have achieved a similar result with using strace to collect the required files and then limiting the image to only those files in the build process.

It's a neat approach, but ultimately brings non-negligible amount of uncertainty as you can never be 100% sure your test set of inputs did not miss a particular edge case which will require to have a file present in the container that no other input does.

My 20-person biotech startup runs on Linux including the workstations of a vast majority of employees.

There are definitely pain points, but also substantial productivity gains. For anybody trying this, my advice would be to attempt to ship the lowest number of possible HW configurations internally - with the ideal being having everybody on a same model of a laptop.

Definitely understand where you're coming from. I'm excited to see how well can Helix make the pedal assist with rear wheel motor work. What I like in particular is that the setup will be more upgradeable than most mid-drive builds.

With respect to the belt drive, glad to hear that's still a possibility (albeit not a priority, which is fine). This is just a single data point, but if there was a Alfine 11 option with a belt, I'd pull the trigger and buy one right now. Well, perhaps I'd wait for the rear rack and the luggage case that I understand are in the works, those are killer accessories.

For me personally, the weight is less of a concern, at least in the vicinity of the low numbers where current helix builds are. To illustrate, my current 20 inch folder is about 15kg (belt+alfine 11) and I find that quite manageable.

In any case, keep rocking on, I hope you guys succeed - it's exciting to see such novel bike engineering happening here in Canada :)

Been a fan for a long time, in fact, my dream bike is a helix with a belt drive (and possibly a mid-drive motor). I do understand a belt drive might require a tensioner, but a man can dream! My current folder has a belt and it's a joy to ride on.

Additionally, I saw there are some electric options coming up in Q3, would you spare a moment to share your thoughts about possible future developments (i.e. if you see belt/ebike options expand in the future)?

The way I've implemented this is that the yubikey is on an extensible lanyard which is almost always around my neck. So while an evil actor could definitely unplug it to ruin my day, stealing it would be a tad bit more difficult :)

In any case, the primary idea here was not to prevent stealing the laptop, but to prevent walking away from the laptop without locking it.

It is worth noting that setting up a local demo with their docker-compose based script is roughly 30s of work:

This will setup a local server on localhost:9000.

That said, I would personally recommend inspecting the bash script first before running it. The script in this case is not malicious, but it's a good habit to have.

Have you tried donating to OSS through Github Sponsors? They act like a middleman (similar to Patreon), but take no fees (the also eat the CC processing fee), so the full amount being donated goes to the project.

This gets rid of the problem with multiple micro-payments, because all of your recurring donations are charged in bulk, once per billing cycle (monthly/yearly).

That said, not every project is on Github or has Github Sponsors feature enabled, but anecdotally the number seems to be growing over time.

Except in this case, what makes a journal prestigious is not the subscription fees that the school has to pay, but the free work of editors and peer reviewers that perform selection from the submitted papers.

There are free-access journals out there that charge virtually no fees, and still have excellent quality / reputation. One such example is Quantum: https://quantum-journal.org/

She did not have to, but she voluntarily chose to, in order to have a shot of winning this case. If she didn't comply with the court's orders, I assume the chances of winning would plummet. From the article:

One reason is that Elbakyan believes she has a shot at winning the case, and her odds might improve if she plays by the rules. “I want the Indian court to finally support free access to science,” she said. If that happened, it would mark a significant victory for Sci-Hub, with reverberations likely beyond India. Victory remains a longshot, but Elbakyan thinks it’s worth the hassle and expense. She didn’t even bother to contest the two lawsuits in the United States.

I really wonder how this is going to play out. For those who don't follow the current situation with Sci-Hub, Alexandra (the creator and likely the sole operator) of Sci-Hub shut down the part of the website ("the magical proxy") that is responsible for fetching the papers that were not previously retrieved. This was done to comply with the request of the Indian court, as described in the article.

As a result, any papers published in 2021 (and some of the rarer, older ones, that nobody tried to access in the past) are not retrievable by Sci-Hub. The user only gets to see a white screen.

This is meant to be a temporary measure, but it's been going on since December of last year (due to various court hearing delays), and the desperation in online communities like the r/scihub subreddit has been palpable [1,2].

I've been using neovim since the initial fork. The Neovim 0.5 is by far the most impressive milestone yet. I tried it couple of months back (before release) and immediately jumped to support the developers through the Github Sponsors after trying it out.
