security of OpenWRT vs Tomato? OpenWrt has a up-to-date Kernel. We try and be as safe as we can from first boot. We make you set your password to get up and running so no crappy passwords from the start. wifi is turnd off on boot so you don't get a unsafe wifi network with no security. The firewall is set up with a small rule set to be as safe as it can. The webinterface can be installed with https We have lots of packages to be even safer. BCP38, addblock, banip, dnscrypt, several proxy servers and dns over https.

I would not run Tomato? on a router in 2020 it runs with old Kernels and old packages.

Disclaimer: I am not a OpenWrt dev I just help out around the place like on Twitter forums PS if any one needs help pleas come to the forums we will help out as best as we can. Some people think that OpenWrt has devs that are not very tolerant. I can tell you that this is not true. there was a bug in LUCI the webinterface that made it hard to use with my screen reader I asked about it on irc and it was fixt in 3 hours.

Known issues:

  * Sysupgrade from ar71xx to ath79 and vice versa is not officially
    supported, a full manual reinstall is recommended to switch targets
    for devices supported by both ar71xx and ath79
  * Images for some device became too big to support a persistent
    overlay, causing such models to lose configuration after a reboot.
    If you  experience this problem, please report the affected device
    and consider downgrading to OpenWrt 18.06 or using the Image Builder
    to pack a smaller custom image
  * Some optional GUI packages crash with an error about missing
    "cbi.lua", install the "luci-compat"  package to fix these
  * Any outstanding issues reported at https://bugs.openwrt.org/

No mate you need to flash a new build to get a new kernel.

For people asking about the user interface of OpenWrt. I think it is very well dun. I get a long with it just fine and I am blind and have to use a screen reader. A11y in Luci is grate. All the pages make sence to most people you do not have to be a networking expert.

I run OpenWrt on my wrt3200acm. It runs grate, but I use it for routing only. I run 2 TP-Link c7 v2s as dumb APs for both 5 and 2.4 GHZ. The c7s are on OpenWrt to. The WRT3200acm does adblocking, runs BanIP and DNS over HTTPS. Plus some firewall rools and BCP38. I am very happy with OpenWrt and my setup! Hi your c7 will not do thoes speeds with SQM the cpu is not fast enough. If you are running OpenWrt 18.06.2 you can use softwair off loading. Go to firewall and tick the box for it, but make shure you disable SQM first and it will get full speeds.

I am sorry mate, but this is not true. I have a connection that is 220 down and 12 up and my C7[-v2 can run SQM and I can get 190 down and 11.5 up. Set your Queue setup script to piece_of_cake.qos:

For people Wanting a cheep router to run OpenWrt look on ebay for TP-Link C7 or WD-N750 The N750 is not AC tho. All my routers can run SQM on my internet and it is 220 down and 12 up.

I updated my WRT3200acm and all is fine. New wifi drivers are better to. I all so flashed WD-N750 WDR3600 C7-v2 and a WRT1900ac

You should really update mate. The 54gl is verry slow now and can not run the latest OpenWrt. It's not safe to have a wrt54gl in the wild. If you would like to chek out all the security bugs that have bin fixt just look at the change logs for the OpenWrt releases.

Hi I like OpenWRT. https://openwrt.org/ I help out testing any changes in the webinterface called LUCI to make shure that it works with screen readers. I am blind and use a screen reader on my computer all the time. Most router softwair is not usable for a screen reader user. I am not a coder but just hang around and chat to the devs and test out any changes that I can. It's a good way for me to mess around with new tech as routers are mutch cheaper than Computers. All so running linux on a computer is no good for me as the screen readers that come with Linux desktops are crap.

Hi yes some times I click my tong, but it's not a magic thing or a super power! The way it works is it helps you to sense how big a room is or how close you are too a wall. The sound bounces back off hard surfaces. If you stand in your bath room and click your tong and then walk out and go in to your kitchen, then do it again you will here the sound is verry different. I am all so pretty good at playing Killer Instinct. I started playing on the snes and now I play on xbox. I haven't played for a few months now.
