Free Pascal was originally derived from Object Pascal and later Delphi, both of which added more object oriented programming features to Pascal. Additionally, it supports some of the more advanced features introduced to Pascal with later releases of Delphi including managed types, interface types, operator overloading, generics, implicit and explicit conversions, extension properties and methods, as well and user defined initializers and finalizers for your custom types, and more.
I could write an article about each of these features, but in summary they each are powerful and help users write more useful programming code when leveraged correctly.
Today Microsoft released the next version of dotnet, known as dotnet 7. It includes many enhancements including new language features to C#, which they are calling C# 11.

Why is this on hackernews right now? It's an old program, closed source, hasn't been updated in ages, and the author abandoned it long ago because he doesn't like people using it to recreate tables. This seems like a shameless plug indeed.
I've always though about that fact myself. Can somone find the answer to why didn't the GLSL designers / video card driver people make PI built into their language?
It can be incorporated into a 3D scene as long as you can make a square billboard . You may have problems with clipping that' you need to address manually, but it might be worth it as you can get better visuals, assuming you are trying to render spheres.
As far as I know there shouldn't be any distortion issues. A sphere will always look like a circle from any perspective. Well that is unless it's really really big or your are really really tiny and you give the size difference you are relatively close to its surface. At that perspective it just look like a flat plane.
With a good phong it's all about the dot products and specular highlight (if you using highlights). Make sure you clamp the dot products and give yourself a minimum ambient light value of around 0.15 to 0.2.
That's very interesting. Thank you for the link. From what I read and see in the images, I gather he's done the same thing I have, as you guessed as well. Obviously he's going much further. The author is using a subtle bump map (simulating balls scratches and imperfections), a reflection map with a gradient and indecent angle, what looks to be a faux sub surface scattering effect.
Also he is placing his balls in a 3D environment with nice shadows that really help to sell the illusion.

I was around and writing OpenGL when we started getting the first programmable cards. Nvidia shot out first with their Cg language, but I held back and waited for the "Orange Book" to come up. I bought it right away and learned from it and by looking at other peoples shaders.

Well first of you get infinite smoothness and better lighting (and reflections if you add them) because there is no underlying geometry. It's just math. It's also much faster, as you're only giving the GPU four vertices defining the square. This can even be sped up further by using point sprites which consume only one vertex.

Here is a summary I wrote on my attempt to render balls using only a fragment shader. I am pretty happy with the result, and I've included a breakdown of the creation process.
Having followed this project on youtube for a while, it would be nice if Stephen (one of the creators) posted a video of the machine actually working. All of his prior content has been related to trying to solve problems with his design. A video or two demonstrating all the features of this PnP machine reliably working would go a long way to help potential buyers decide if they want to commit their money and time to get Stephen's PnP.
This tool is not at all scientific or accurate. One problem is that this tool assumes most of the water flows through rivers and out to oceans, when in many cases water flows underground in aquifers, emerging elsewhere. In the US south east these aquifers travel a long distance feeding many springs, which then lead to one of two rivers: the Suwannee River and the Saint Johns river.

The rendering in my library relies upon OpenGL and the NanoVG library. My library is called Tiny Sim. All of these nano tiny and vg names seem to be colliding adding a bit of confusion in my opinion.
I've worked a bit in OpenSCAD, and although I really enjoy the programming approach to generating 3D designs, it really is limited when compared to traditional CAD software. Being able to visually align an item, or use even basic commands like offset or fillet, are absent in OpenSCAD. Sure OpenSCAD has it's place, but I think that's in the area of procedural generated shapes, and it's not for 3D part or machine design.

Since when is Facebook a convenience? Regarding a cell phone, I don't commute and I don't have even the tiniest bit of need for one. Linux is better than Windows, and it's my opinion everyone ought to use a VPN.
Finally, you have to be a real conspiracy nut case to believe not having an Facebook account or cell phone would get someone `red flagged` by a shadow overlording spying agency.
The joke is on them. I don't have a cell phone, I don't use Facebook, and I am constantly Linux distro hopping when I work writing code while ssh'ed into private servers behind my private VPN.

In all seriousness though, you are wrong on all points. Sorry, yes you are wrong. Rather than write a point by point rebuttal, against my common sense (you know, the thing about arguing with someone one the Internet) I'll just write a few paragraphs, provide some professional anecdotal and maybe quantitative evidence, and allow others to decide what's reasonable.
I build laptops and desktops for students of whom I teach programming and electronics. I build both new and used systems, and I loan and sell a lot of computers. Students get the loaners, buyers fund profits to buy more students computers. That said I experience a wide variety of actual system performance information across a large spectrum of computers.
Linux installs faster than Windows by a lot. When booting it's my experience that Linux can open a task manager (sometimes called system monitor on Linux) quicker than on a Windows system, the same goes for the file manager (explore on Windows). Across the board most programs open faster on Linux. You can disbelieve all you want, but that's just an objective reality.

Regarding less CPU cycles, yes again it 's true, Linux uses less. Linux has far fewer background services and other tasks running in the background doing a bunch of unnecessary stuff.

It's not just the services though. Windows is constantly scanning files for viruses or other malware, it's recording your activity, it's indexing the content of your computer as files are written or change. All this causes guess what? More CPU cycles and more memory being consumed. You may now go back and check my second point.
Moving on, you are wrong again on point number three. You don't need to download illegal Windows software to get malware. You can get it attached as an add on to free legal Windows programs.

Next, Windows updates are notorious for downloading updates in the background without your knowledge or consent. There are well known stories of people who were working on an important task on their Windows computer, who got up for a break and came back to see updates being applied from an automatic reboot causing their work to be forever lost.

Without a doubt Windows has more software, but I said the Linux app store experience is better than Windows. On Linux distributions have app stores that come from a curated list, and those apps are built from source by the distribution maintainer. They are verified to some degree and use the same installation methodology. On Windows this is not the case, a lot of software installs automatically without user consent. I keep getting Espon software each time I install Windows on a new computer attached to my network, gleefully telling me I need to buy ink from Epson. Additionally, Windows software often contains other adware or malware even if it comes from a Windows store. The software management side of things on Windows is a big stinking mess, which was the point I made, but yeah feel free miss that point to morph it into "Windows has more software".
When I said telemetry, that means collecting you data. You're not only being disingenuous in asserting that means downloading your personal files, you're also asking someone to prove a negative.
Regarding customization, on my distribution of choice it's very easy to change the icon or control theme, add extensions, and change those settings. There are prebuilt themes you can preview and click on to make a bunch of changes all at once, or you can click the original prebuilt to restore to the default settings.
You say the price of Linux versus Windows is 100% irrelevant nowadays. As a system builder I don't follow. Does Windows cost a system builder money or not? If it does, then it's not irrelevant.
Linux runs better on both new and older hardware. Better as in programs open faster, the file manager opens faster, the task manager opens faster. Everything uses less memory and less CPU cycles. Everything is snappier.
Linux users don't have to worry nearly as much about malware, trojans, viruses, exploits. It's more secure.
Linux distros generally don't annoy users with stealthy automatic forced updates.
Linux distros have a better app store experience than Windows, plus most of whatever there is free without much if any risk.
Linux doesn't have any phone home telemetry type "features" built into the OS.
Linux user experience is much more customizable. There are a much greater variety of tools at your disposal to customize how you want your desktop to look and operate.
Linux is free.
Well you have said what I always think. For those familiar C# feels like the next iteration of Delphi, but with curly braces. Both Delphi and Free Pascal haven't stopped though. They've added generics, extension methods, attributes, and many of the other features that have also been added onto C#.
Free Pascal has gone further to add management operators, vector math intrinsics, and improved array features.
