I know that Godaddy does this. It sucks that NameCheap is doing similarly crappy stuff..

A good Password Manager - doesn’t matter which.
Helps avoid password resets and makes logins in apps much easier.

Right now, every visa is a hassle. It is unreal how much of a bottleneck US Immigration system has become - no visa appointment slots for months, or years in some cases.
Then, if you do get a H1, you will likely never get a Green card given the current rules.
For short term (5-7 years), you may surely consider getting some sort of work visa. Long term, if you are looking for PR, US is not the one to look at for Indians.
I am in mid 30s, got PR approval 5 years ago. At current rate, I will retire and still not have a PR. It’s ridiculous, but not funny at all.
I have Sleep Apnea, use CPAP daily since about 6 years now and it has been a life-changing experience.
Sucks to have been sleepy and tired for all the years I can remember.
Can you elaborate on what MMA and TDP expansions are? Where are you (or the doc you refer) located?
I am completely fine with using CPAP, but if I don’t need it at all, that would be even better.
I have been there and this situation sucks.
I have been testing payments with Stripe, using both an Indian and a US credit card.
I have standing instructions on Indian CC and get advance email notifications but it goes through.
Don’t even get any notification for US CC, except post payment notification.
Experience may vary for larger amounts, as mentioned in the comments here.
Dashlane. Been using it for a few years now. A bit disappointed that they discontinued native apps for Mac and Windows.
Wonder why it is never mentioned here on HN.
Two interviews can to mind when I read this.
1. An in-person phone round interview at one of the social media Companies in the Bay Area. The interviewer came 10 min late, gave me a problem and was then busy as hell with his phone. At least he had the courtesy to tell me that there was a prod issue he was engaged in, but still, not cool.
The problem was tough as hell, and I didn’t solve it. There was no help/prompts either. I was curious about the source of the problem - and the person told me that it was his own personal twist on a problem from competitive programming competitions.
So, basically, unless you are a seasoned competitive programmer, you are screwed. Again, not cool.
2. An interview at one of the Big Banks in SF for a Engg role. One of the interviewers asked me about my current job and was visibly upset when I said it was cool and nice. Then they followed that up by being disinterested and openly hostile in the rest of the interview.
Didn’t get the job and dodged a bullet. But I still don’t understand what his problem was. Since when is it necessary to hate and abuse your current job when you look for the next one?
Ha! I agree Ruby is probably weirder, even though I love it.
It's going to be Webdev with Flask. This is another vote for Python The Hard Way - will take a look at it, and get some hands-on time with Python.
Yes, they are OK with that, but I'd like to ramp up as much as I can.
As to the IDE, I am assuming they would be using PyCharm and that should be familiar since I use RubyMine. I'll check.
That is a very nice resource list! Thanks for sharing!
Awesome. Hadn't thought of that!
Very practical tips. Thanks!
Already been reading. Time to work on the other two steps! :)
You should consider getting a sleep test. As far back as I can remember, I have always been tired and sleepy through the years. I just attributed it to being on less sleep due to my erratic schedule. But I was diagnosed with Sleep Apnea at 29, after likely having it for a couple of decades or so.
Been using CPAP for almost 5 years now. Everyday is fantastically fresh with a regular ~7 hours of sleep. Can't recommend it enough. I am also on path to see if my Blood Pressure medicine can be stopped - since it is understood to be the side effect of Sleep Apnea in my case. Should become clear in a few months.
Also, been active for a year. Started just walking in the evening mandatorily - sometimes listening to podcasts, and other times just using it as a break from everything digital. Then, after a few months, split the walk-time into a morning and evening routine. Probably been regular at it for about 395 of the last 400 days. It's a habit now. Added running to the routine but it is a bit erratic still. Want to add HIIT / Weight-training to workout routine, but that hasn't stuck at all and will try again in a while.
As to the results, I am almost 11Kgs lighter from my max weight, feel healthy, BP is almost always normal, BMI is close to normal, resting heart rate has dipped significantly, and so much more. I track a ton of this info as it can help you stay motivated on the slow, low and tiresome days. :)
Wish you all the best - experiment and find something that suits you best!
The problem is that this is what BofA considers 'historic' data (older than 18 months, I think). Only PDF statements are available. And the text is encoded as well, which means I cannot just copy paste all transactions text and clean it up in sheets or a text editor (Amex has copyable text PDFs)
Took a massive data migration from several hours (over a day) to a few minutes (less than 10) on MongoDB with the right indices.
Been there, seen that.
Some good domain names I found were suddenly not available and were up for auction on GoDaddy.
After a couple of times, I have completely ditched them for search.
Namecheap is good. Also use Google Domains for checking now.
Yes, sometimes. Depends on the content to be sent.
I also send messages to myself on Slack.
There seems to be a slight misunderstanding regarding the ‘exam’ and ‘testing’ context in this article. I don’t know if it is translated or was just poorly written.
Just to be clear, this awesome dad was taking his son to another town to appear for the 10th grade Math examination so that he does not fail the paper. Off-topic, but I am surprised that these exams are still being conducted. Most academic examinations are suspended as of now and may resume next month.
Anyways, though the situation was like this because most public transportation has been shut down, it is still a sad state of affairs - and I don’t know what to do about it nor what can be a solution.
Respect for this father who is striving to push his son at least a level up the economic ladder via education.
Decades ago, my father used to walk several miles a day to attend school. His dedication and hard work has probably pushed my family through 2 generations-worth of growth. I’d say we are upper middle-class in India right now. And I am eternally grateful to my family for their efforts.
Kudos to this father, and others who strive through utter misery to rise above the hand life has dealt them.
Politico.com?
I am not American, but follow the politics. The content seems neutral to me but I haven’t really judged it seriously enough.
Last year, I did have a comment on the question - It was good to express what I was feeling and get considerate feedback on that - https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=20477882
For me, the situation right now is almost amusing.
Had I been writing this comment yesterday, I'd have stated that things were fine despite the upheaval in the outside world and I was doing OK remotely in a job that paid well and it was fun to work with very smart people.
Today, I am out of a job and staring at sudden uncertainty in the near future. Still, compared to a year ago, I am more like myself - calm and composed. I am around family and have things to look forward to. The trauma and near-depression from a year ago seems significantly reduced. I am almost glad to realize that the damaged me from a year ago seems to have healed quite well.
The near future is uncertain, but I am optimistic. This shock and uncertainty might just be what I needed to finally get going and find my own path. Time will tell, and perhaps I will too - in the next year's thread.
That would be great, but they would never do that. It would make studying the organic search results much easier, allowing folks to better reverse-engineer the search algo; and game the system to a greater extent.
You are focusing on an important metric - the growth rate!
What is the source of the data? How frequently is it updated?
Bookmarked. :)
Edit: Oh, I see the source now. I see they also have an API. My questions are pointless now. :|
What type of tech? There are tons of programs for consumer tech and even B2B tech. You have to pick based on what 'tech' niche your content is addressing.
Besides that, many technical sites and even apps/services leverage Carbon Ads network - I know that is not an affiliate recommendation, but something to look at if you are open to Ads (and if they accept your application)
I have been using SleepWatch for a few months and I like it. Using the Apple Watch, it can give me decent stats, analyze patterns and suggest things for a better sleep cycle.
Given that a ton of people have recommended AutoSleep here, I will give that a try as well and see which one seems to be better.
Many states and the central government is making provisions to do direct-to-account money transfer to people. This is just one of the measures being taken up considering the poorer strata of the society. The money being distributed might not be enough, but should help families through the lockdown.
Better than losing the sole earning member of the family to an avoidable disease. :(
With my privileged position in having the freedom to sit at home and work without interruptions, I can only try to be empathetic and imagine the hardships hundreds of millions of people will face.
There is no compulsion that I know of, but most of these businesses have associations and lobbies that will be dealing with the government and trying to keep things open. I have no doubt there will be disruptions all over the country. There are no precedents of such situations, nor would I expect any kind of Standard Operating Procedures to be in place.
It's gonna be chaotic - but hopefully not deadly. And that is the important thing.
Last few days, I have been thinking how disastrous a widespread infection would be in India. I shudder thinking about the numbers if this goes out of hand. A small percentage of 1.4 billion is a huge number. To avoid that, frankly, I'd accept temporary draconian measures.
I have been preaching "Stay at home" to everyone in my circles who would listen. Hope you do the same.
As an Indian, here's a more cautious perspective:
1. I am going with the assumption that community transmission might have started at some location; but with that assumption this 21-day lockdown becomes an imperative and excellent step.
2. Will people obey the lockdown? (This is not a curfew, as essential services would be open.) Many people, sadly, would not. That is where the sometimes-criticized high-handed approach of police and other agencies would be useful.
3. I am optimistic about this period. At the end of it, if nothing else, we would have more data points to make thoughtful decisions about how to proceed and what other measures need to be taken.
4. Testing is being ramped up, and I hope it is an exponential ramp-up. Local test kits are also approved and beginning production today.
As a nation with 4X the population of the USA, and 1/3rd the area, the population density in India and particularly in the urban areas is off the charts. Hence, the approach suggested in some other countries, like carrying on with walks, exercises and other outdoor activities while practicing 'social distancing', gets much more difficult.
It is nearly impossible to be outdoors in urban areas and not have people nearby. As such, measures have to be very strict. I imagine the situation was similar in Wuhan in China, and they had to impose a complete lockdown as well.
Ironically, that did not take long to read, as the page does not load.
