It’s also that so many real-world use cases of BSDs entirely avoid these issues. If they were dominant concerns they would be addressed in a very professional manner, like the rest of the system. But the target market for these things just doesn’t overlap. Maybe there is a market for a BSD-esque approach to solving these things, but honestly? Meh.

Yeah you run into this head on trying to use BSD. It’s too much glue and compat work. By the end of it you no longer have a coherent system, you’re back to Linux.

I use FBSD on an old-ish Lenovo W540 without too many hiccups. No, it’s not for everyone and never was. I wouldn’t suggest to anyone to run a BSD as a daily driver, or at all, unless they have a good reason to. Once you cross that line you need to know what and why.

At the risk of sounding snide, thank you for mentioning this. I am going to skip this article, so you probably saved me a bunch of time.

I’ve heard lots of music like this over the years. It’s catchy, the lyrics are very relatable to the audience of people who like this music. It might not be your thing, but it is certainly enjoyed by many, and there are albums written around this subject. Folk/blues are made of this subject.

Is it over all flat and boring? Somewhat. You can only hear the same thing so many times before it gets tiring.

I dislike being this negative. Given these are prestigious awards I was expecting higher standards. Apart from the death-grip in the photo which makes me wince for the poor pen, this entry unfortunately shows the pretentiousness of the whole thing. Artists (drawing and painting kind) have been using broad felt markers for as long as they’ve been around as part of a rough-in specifically because it leaves enough ambiguity where the imagination can fill in the details, allowing them to move forward through a concept without committing to any specific idea (see Syd Mead, Scott Robertson, and so on). This is an actual part of the work, not a stationary that a salaryman uses for some profound moment of reflection.

Not a good week/weekend for Microsoft on HN. There are currently 2-3 front page threads tearing them apart. I’ve even made my own thread regarding discontinuation of not only support, but runnability of Publisher (what the absolute fuck!). What are their product managers doing?!

There’s a poster on here who keeps posting and re-posting about their dinner with a Microsoft executive and how they were told Microsoft is all-in on enterprise. Waiting for that copy-paste to make its way over here.

Microsoft keeps footgunning things so hard I think even enterprise might be reluctant to go with them moving forward [0]. I don’t have Netcraft numbers in front of me but I doubt things have notably improved even if they do have a strategy shift to enterprise which includes crapping all over Windows for no good reason.

I’m personally glad FOSS is going strong but that’s a complete aside.

[0] We got burned by Azure as I’m sure many other enterprises have, and they did exactly nothing to remedy/compensate the situation, SLAs be damned. At this point our strategy is to move off of reliance on any Microsoft/windows tech. We moved off of ActiveDirectory not too long ago. Bing/Edge/etc honestly who cares.
