Thanks. Indeed those are transformers, upon further digging(for some reason, I think of transformers as big, these are not big but boy they emit this low-buzz sound). And indeed it has been very challenging to have them moved, because as you said they probably picked this location based on a reason.
It is surreal that this article showed up now. I am going back and forth currently with our electric utility company. They upgraded capacitor pack on the pole by my house. And these new ones are generating so much of this kind of low buzz sound, it is unbearable. I was researching into what generates this noise, and found this article very timely. Only solution is to move these, as nothing else can be done about this sound. Which is turning into quite a project.
I used to dump every thing in GoogleDrive and search. I was enamored with keeping my notes in plaint text, so as to not tie these with any specific tools/app/formats as these go out of fashion every few years. However I realized I also have links/clippings from Web, which needs to be part of my searchable knowledge-base. And I want to be able to clip/bookmark those from my phone as well as Mac and Windows machines. Evernote works great for such use, and has tags(it does not keep notes in plain text format though, these are supposed to be exportable though). I would not mix video/movies with text based content though(links are fine).
I am surprised there is not much noise over this. In my city, they recently replaced street lights with the LED ones. These were so bright and piercing, I complained to the city, and they replaced ones near my house to lower intensity one. Still the other one's not the nearest to my house are still so bright, it is very unpleasant, even though they are at a distance. No one in my neighborhood seems to be bothered by these? In my opinion these pose serious risk to health, not just ours but to birds, animals and plants. Even when driving on roads, where these lights are on, they just hit you like a sunlight.

Best thing about HN are the quality of posts and the comments. No politics, mainly focused around technology and intellectually challenging posts. It gives you idea of technology trends, and how others are handling challenges similar to yours - something equivalent of going to a conference, but without going to a conference. Some of the comments here are even better than the article and when you combine both, you get a complete perspective. You learn not only technology but how to lead people, how to(and not to) run a company based on what/how you absorb from HN. It's the quality of comments that makes it better than any such site/forum out there. I still remember a comment - which was almost equivalent to a dozen books, around why some people are successful - something to the effect that it is not that we lack information, or lack access to information but the fact that our mind is so full of input that we don't act on what we already know we need to do. Very few other places, I've found such thought provoking comments.

We recently migrated from Anthill to Jenkins, and went with Pipelines instead of freestyle jobs, and what a difference it has made in terms of being able to see/manage your build/deployment as code. We have been using Blue Ocean in Beta mode (we use Cloudbees version). Is it out of beta for Cloudbees version also?
This assumes that eye is the only sensory mechanism to measure if an organism is self aware or not. Looking at snimal kingdom we already know different animals rely on other senses more than eyes. So perhaps not the best way to measure self awareness. Besides we know kids upto certain age also fail this test, which means is it possible this is an acquired skill?
Isn't this the same principle that subway/bart trains in some cities use? He is right, it is time to increase apaption of this 50+ yr old idea and apply it to other modes of transportation. Not only you operate in 3D, there is less disruption to existing inhabitants and roads.
In terms of ease of setup, I don't think any of these can beat Eero. And in spite of Netgear marketing dollars behind, Orbi, I hope EERO maintains the lead in this space, as they were the first one to push for mesh networking in consumer Wifi space.

Totally agree..This should be put on a page published somewhere. Whenever I am trying to look at performance issues (or any other issue) with a SQL, this is the first thing I do and pretty much follow the same strategy.
I must say this is one of the best articles I have seen on obesity. This clearly lays out how psychology plays more important roles in obesity than merely focusing on diet/exercise. I had come to the same conclusion after trying different diets but the author lays out a very scientific explanation of how it works. One thing very important pointed out by the author is this: more you try to lose weight by controlling diet and/or exercise, more it activates your hunger drive. Instead just have some middle of the road guidelines(not too much carb, not too little fat, no calorie counting) and use this guideline to eat till you feel satiated(more you control yourself thru willpower, more it activates your hunger drive). As more and more people get confused by the contradictory recommendations, flip-flops in results of different type of diets, eventually the psychological aspect, as laid out by the author, will get more attention. Hopefully.
I have 6 yr old and a dog. Dog i've had for little more than a yr. There is a running joke in the house that - if there is a fire in the house, and I can only save one - I will save dog first and then kid. I think it has to do with innocence..kids have that pure innocence(at least until they are 6/7 yrs old), and dogs the same...there is no hidden motives, no long term agenda...they are just interested in play... interested in whatever is going on in the moment. And this is what attracts us.
Beauty of a sport is in playing...and not so much in keeping score. When you are really playing(in the zone), you don't look up at the score.
Long time back I had posed a question on "Ask PG" - that how come PG does not go out and do a startup(after his initial one)? My aim was to ask if doing startup is such a "must to do" thing for certain kind of folks, then he should be doing it again, and again (and not stop after the first one and then start advising only). While I never got a direct answer to that one, he did answer this in another forum the same thing - which basically boiled down to - that doing startup is too much work, and he does not want spend his time doing that. I really do think, that doing startup is not such a sexy thing as it is portrayed it to be. I feel it is another of those things in life, where primary reason for most folks for doing a startup is that you will seem more "important" a person, after you have a successful startup. Otherwise you are just an ordinary dude with 9-5 job. I truly wonder how many folks actually do it because it is more fun and adventure, than pain and stress(most of the time). Or if the real reasons for doing startup are ever examined.
What an efficient robot. It is amazing how our entire lives are about being most "productive". Do we do anything just for the for the fun of doing it, in an unstructured unplanned way?
Using UUID(or anything other than sequentially increasing numbers) for primary keys is a good idea because when you have high number of concurrent inserts happening, if you have a sequentially increasing primary key(implemented via a b-tree index), the inserts into index will result in hotspot(as all the inserts will be at the end, in the same place). Whereas if it is random number (like UUID), the entry into indexes will happen at different places thus avoiding hot spots.
Public memory is short(how many remember the Top Gear review of model S now?). In few months people will forget about this episode. This may have negative short term impact(or may be not) on sales of Tesla cars/shareprice. But from Tesla's point of view, they got the following:
1) another test case, which they may not have accounted for, and they will use this to make future improvements
2) wide publicity, which may seem negative at this point, but lot more folks know now that it is possible to think of driving in electric cars outiside your city limits (it may not seem to have works as planned in this case), but nevertheless it is a possibility. CNN did another test ride, which again is more publicity.
Overall I see this as a net plus for Tesla in the long term.
Game consoles are irrelevant from point of view of gaining/retaining big chunk of consumer market. There is a reason why Apple avoided this market (instead of focussing on music, then phone and of course tablet), while Microsoft was busy competing with Sonys and Ninentendos in early formative years of Xbox. In less than five years, this whole game console thing will be a feature in TV/tablet etc.
Rather than self-driving cars, I see hype-loop kind of system being more effective overall(reliable, cheaper). Obviously a lot more work has been done(Google) on self-driving cars but I would secretly hope/wish that Elon really gets cracking on this thing(especially since he has to regular suffer one of the worst commutes in the world - 405 freeway in LA - especially that particular section).
In the long run what is going to hurt SQL server is the fact that it is on Windows only. And if you look at the technology trends for databases - big/midsize IT shops are gravitating towards integrated solutions(Exadata e.g) where Microsoft still relies on third party for hardware. Small shops/startups are gravitating towards commodity hardware(primarily linux based), where trend is more towards MySQL/Postgre/NoSQL, where Microsoft is lacking. And then the cloud (where Microsoft does have an early presence, but then Amazon has been there long before and Oracle is there in too)....In that context this In-Memory database technology tussle is playing out, which was clearly ignited by SAPs Hana (even though oracle had times-ten long before SAP came out with Hana). So looking at future market direction, things are not looking very good for SQL server, even though it is probably one of the best products to come out of Microsoft and currently is doing great.
