We have lessons to learn from European paradigms as you point out. However I think you are a little harsh on founders, the pursuit of fame may be an issue for a small minority but is hardly a universal issue.

I saw a short presentation on it at the weekend at PyCon Ireland, It was above my pay grade but it was intrigueing.

I am a developer in the the company but work a lot with our sales guy. So while the area is interesting to me I am incredibly ignorant of it.
