Cringe is one thing, but exposing data gets you walked out the front door. The two are worlds apart in terms of severity.
It would be, if the owner began editorializing the content, because the point at which they get involved, they lose neutrality, and therefore Section 230 immunity protection.

You are not missing anything. This is a reheated anti-pattern that was (poorly) conceived in the 90's, and managed to crawl back. Was a great way to break a monolithic app back then, and it's still a great way to break a modular, scalable, cloud based web app now.

You found it, right at the end of the post. It is a cultural issue above all else and it is a common difference. It's not a question of good/bad or entitlement. Just decide what type of culture you are OK working for, given the trade-offs. If you don't have to live in a $4000 a month, two bedroom apartment, or a 2 hour commute, or 12% state income tax, maybe it's worth adjusting. Maybe not.

Have you ever gotten a six figure check when you move out? Happens to buyers all the time.
Renting everything means you go from managing dozens of objects to dozens of contracts. Imagine managing acceptable use, wear and tear, cost depreciation, return dates, rate increases, and of course your time to manage this is counted as zero in the cost model. Sounds like a nightmare.
It is very possible the reason is not speed, but readability. If you simply named it 'length', then sure, there is no point. If it is given a better, more descriptive name, and then gets used in an equation elsewhere in the code, then it may be very useful because it is easier to read.

PHP is falling because it has major issues. It has poor idioms and is slow. It is trending down, not up.

That's interesting. Most working people I know still have healthy marriages.
There are lots of places where you can trade commits for dollars, remotely. Have you tried topcoder or Upwork? My guess is you thought about it, but they don't pay enough. So the market is clearly sending you a signal that for pay above the commodity code commit, a premium goes to those who also show up and communicate successfully. If you are well paid, you can safely bet it is for more than just your code commits. I think you've got an overly simplified view of reality that you hold onto at your own professional peril.
Answer that question and you might have a startup company...
If you're going to do it at all, I agree, integration with GPU enabled libraries is a must. Even so, I could use DLLImport in VBA, and get access to Tensorflow from an Excel macro. I would say the same thing: you can get a dog to walk on two legs, but that's not what it was meant to do. 'Can' and 'should' are world's apart.
I mean, it's not that it won't work, but why would you use a language that is a CPU hog, for a heavy duty task that needs a GPU? It's 2 orders of magnitude slower than it needs to be, and nobody else has ever trained or done tutorials for PHP ML, so why? Just why??
Respect for building fundamentals, but in terms of utility, it needs a proper warning label IMHO.

Really good read. So true that most 'innovation' is really a lot of tedious work most people don't bother doing. That is in sharp contrast to the 'Eurika!' moment that most people think of. There may never be a eurika moment, just a bunch of small insights put together into a body of work.

The assertion is not that Huawei isn't an asset. Huawei is definitely an asset. No one disagrees with that. The assertion is that Huawei is a _Communist_ asset used to enprison their citizens and steal data from freedom loving countries.
