I thought this as well and bought my wife the 8GB model, thinking it would be enough for her casual use. With nothing open but Chrome or Safari (dozens of tabs, sure) it will lock up and sometimes even hard restart. 8GB is just not enough for anyone anymore.

In my view, we need legislation to step in and enforce some level of algorithmic tuning. Modern algorithms drive engagement at all costs, regardless if it's healthy for the individual. I want to be able to tune the algorithm to potentially use a timeline feed instead, or limit content to only come from topics I subscribe to, etc. We probably need parental controls that allow parents to enforce algorithm tuning as well.

A recent example of an algorithm going wrong is Reddit. Home used to show you strictly a feed of reddits you subscribed to, and it was shown as a timeline. The most recent changes not only removed the timeline approach to the feed, it's now injecting subreddits you don't subscribe to and asks if you're interested in them.

I think a great use case for this technology could be to preserve dying languages. I'm sure a lot of work has already gone into preserving the written form of these languages, but training models on data sets of native speakers could be a way to preserve pronunciation.

I've seen this many times and completely agree. Nearly every issue that I've had managing teams that hasn't easily resolved with communication has come down to ego. I'd go so far as to say that weeding out ego during the hiring process is the most effective thing you can do.

1Password's mobile experience also isn't great, especially when compared to iOS's native keychain syncing abilities.

All in all, I'm fairly bearish on 1Password for the personal use case. If you're not in the Apple ecosystem, Google has similar capabilities. If you want to be agnostic, then there are free alternatives as well.

We do something very similar to what's laid out here. One note on the On-Call stream though. We've found that On-Call can become a catch-all, and force engineers to work in domains they have no familiarity with. It hasn't worked very well for us.

Not necessarily. Before the great filter, there's the jump to multi-cellular life. As far as we know, the symbioses with mitochondria bacteria only happened once, and is the progenesis of all multi-cellular life on earth.

So single-celled life may not be terribly uncommon throughout the cosmos.

Maybe you could evaluate based on changes in player's performance or ELO. If they rapidly begin advancing, it could be more likely they are cheating.

The Big Squeeze

I've done basically the same thing a couple times over the last 10 years. First time I lost 40 pounds or so over a period of 6 months. After a few years, my weight slowly started to rise up a bit, so I had another period of caloric restriction. I lost 25 pounds over two months.

I think the most important part is simply counting your calories. You can't manage what you can't measure. You'd be surprised just how quickly you can get to your daily caloric limit with a few snacks and one large meal.

Now days I don't stress too much about my eating. I still try to keep a caloric balance, but I also know exactly how to lose the weight again if it starts to go up too much.

Australia is similar as well. I'm not sure having more parties fundamentally fixes the issues. From my experience, parties just form coalitions that wind up taking similar stances to the US two-party system.

I will say though that the US two-party system seems to promote a deadlock / winner-take-all scenario that doesn't seem as common in other countries. So I do think having something like ranked choice voting will help. It's just not the full solution.
