The mainstream audience was young and open to new ideas. Folks could create new things that impacted the culture at large and in that way punch above their weight class. In NYC, people could create art movements that would live for the next 50 years. Sort of like the way kids could create new technology in a garage in Silicon Valley in the 70s, or a dorm room in the 00s. It was a time in culture where the doors were open and you could have profound impact. The doors closed again, so people look back and have an appreciation for what was possible and what became and perhaps long for it again.

I took a first date to Synecdoche, New York and we didn't have a second (good film though).
Some people want to create. Some people want to consume. Some people want to collect. Sometimes consumables become collectible (Baseball cards). Sometimes collectibles become consumable (Mona Lisa postcards). Creators are allowed to decide who their market is and adjust as they see fit.
It sounded like they were willing to remove the mods and let the forums pick new ones

Imagine if billionaires had the same _effective_ tax rate we do. That would be helpful enough.

It'd be pretty novel and refreshing if Apple competed for developer buy-in for payments on features and functionality.
Seems like the unspoken story here isn't really about Apple, it's that the govts of the world want access to your phone data and its backups. They're already getting some of it from exploits, telcos and the cloud. They'll be back and will keep coming and it's hard to imagine any company will have the ability to stand up to them without seriously impacting their business.

Am I nuts, or is the heart of this issue really the fact that our healthcare system is built on tying benefits to full time jobs?
Being peaceful by nature, but also highly allergic to mosquitos, I'm cool with completely eradicating these little flying vampires and the ecological collapse that would ensue. Or not as the case may be https://www.nature.com/news/2010/100721/full/466432a.html
Apple has an abusive relationship with developers. I bet this harkens back to Jobs being pissed about jailbreaking and having to open up the platform. I think the culture still reflects that basic misunderstanding at the company. It's ironic, because it's the apps and developers that made the iPhone what it is - case in point, "There's an app for that," which they actually went and trademarked. https://www.cnn.com/2010/TECH/mobile/10/12/app.for.that/inde...

There's a great doc that came out last year on Marion Stokes, who recorded decades of television. Her footage is being added to The Internet Archive https://blog.archive.org/tag/marion-stokes/

Given our propensity for war and genocide, I wonder if humans just killed off all the other near species?
If Apple's going to be a services company now, wouldn't it be great if they kept themselves honest (and their products great) by honoring a level playing field for the services they compete with e.g. Spotify? Imagine if services like iCloud, Pages and Mail were comparable to or better than the existing product landscape? Apple's been holding themselves to too low a standard for too long. Maps was a wakeup call for them, it'd be cool if they lit a fire like that across the board for their products.

At this point, maybe just delete your Facebook account?
Parallels still exists? Good for them!
Reminded of this Chamath quote attributed to Bill Gates in an interview with Semil Shah about Facebook's platform.
"I remember when we raised money from Bill Gates...and Gates said something along the lines of, 'That’s a crock of shit. This isn’t a platform. A platform is when the economic value of everybody that uses it, exceeds the value of the company that creates it. Then it’s a platform.'"

When OSX launched with a Unix platform, every hackathon went from Thinkpads to Macbooks over the course of a year or two. It was just more fun to make tech on them. I don't think it was intentional on Apple's part to target developers, I think it was a byproduct of the Next's team's passion for great tools that leaked into Apple's offerings. Apple would do well to make developers happy and to make creative pros happy. It's weird that we're forced to buy iMacs and Macbook Airs in 2018 to do our best work.
Also a daily subscriber to Stratechery. Ben (Zuck?) under-indexes on the feeling of good will associated with a good product experience. But I agree that we over-index on it here on HN. IG won on speed, usability and UX over early competitors like Hipstamiatic and Flickr. But for sure the network was the addictive glue that brought users back, new users in and made the entire product grow. FB feels like the opposite experience to me - crappy product decisions, bloated UX, bad will. My best guess is FB pushed IGTV on Mike and Kevin. They did their best to implement it, but it feels tacked on, like a FB feature, and it became clear that more and more feature pressure was going to be put on the product until it too became bloated and incomprehensible. I don't think Ben sees this, but the poor product choices (in deference to business and strategy) will pile up and the vein will collapse, just as it is starting to do in FB's main product. IG had a good run, it's hard to imagine a future where it gets better from here.
