Do you know the reasons why management is moving away from working remotely?
In an effort to attract and keep more talent the company for which I work allows working remotely more and more. Without that option the turn over rate for engineers would have doubled in the last year.

I have no idea if such company exists:
- No politics. If the whole team agrees that something benefits their work then we will try it out. I do not have any respect for managers sabotaging team decisions because of gut feelings. Hard facts count. I can help getting those, just ask.
- Working fully remotely from Europe.
- No BS. No, your video serving backend written in Ruby which does 3k requests/min isn't something to brag about. No, you do not need to brag about your Sales guy who brought in 200$ more revenue this month. Let me fix this bug for you in production and save a few servers of your AWS bill.
- I don't care if it's Ruby/Java/Scala/Go/Erlang/Self Invented Foo
- No Perl.
- No quizzes during interviews.
- Even though I am only a software engineer everyone around me says that I get stuff done. Ownership does not stop at QA/OPS/PROD/Customer Support. I love finished products, not pushing lines of code to git. Empower me.
- Smart colleagues
Looking at these few criterias I should start paying people to find such companies.
Building automation is already available for all your automation needs. Quite expensive but working well. I cannot see what Apple brings to the table other than control devices. Big automation vendors will probably just write a wrapper for that custom Apple protocol and be done with it.
Does it matter? With the first product users could win money, travels, cosmetics and other prizes for solving knowledge based puzzles. The B2B product saves time by automating specific QA work flows when testing mobile apps/ xbox/playstation/wii games.

I am in the same position as you: Want to invest money in a startup. So I had a look at different seed investments/crowd funding sites like [1] but often they are heavily tied to your physical location cause of funding/financing laws in your country. Found a couple of german sites that act as a funding mediator which looked quite nice: They analyse businesses, providing regular business insights, earnings, spendings and so on. But mind you, I am a total beginner with that so I am easy to impress.
For a release the lua code is surely translated into objective-c, so lua is 'just' used as a scripting language.
The pitch itself is bad. What is your slogan? Tools like a pro or something for digital rebels? No screenshots of nothing? Not even a demo game? No disarming arguments why I should lock myself into your closed source middleware? Better: use Moai (open source, can fix bugs on your own, can add features, etc.) with Testflight (ios only I guess). I really do not know who the target audience is for this product. Too expensive (3 seats 150$/MO, lol) for newcomers (the video is surely targeted at those) but missing meat for 'real pros' - yo!
Uhm, all I read was whine, whine and more whine. - Too long unemployed and getting weird looks at interviews? Create your own consulting company, say "provided consulting to <your expertise>". Swallow down that your customers where your mom, aunt, uncle or your next neighbour. Why did you apply for this job? Expanding your horizon, sharpen your skills, new adventures, the whole shebang - company having requirements no one can fullfil? guess what, the company is probably shit anyway - get a job at some coder shop, even if it is below your standard - if you have done consultancy for any money house - please don't call yourself anything technical (like speed traders) but go rot in hell
Too bad the author does not care to ask for the more important bits of developing software but devulges into questions a web crawler could answer. Creating elitisim (by offensively downgrading any developer who cannot answers these questions or simply has to look up an answer) does benefit no one. Developing software is so much more than details of an algorithm, of an operating system or a network topology. It is about needs, about requirements, users, customers, support, processes, technology and the list goes on and on. Simply put, he is not asking questions for software developers but for programmers.
This exam is just a scam. Engineers working in those areas you described are fully aware and do not need an exam to proove it. Engineers new to those areas will not get a job because of having done this exam. With just a so low percentage in QA passers know jack about testing very-whatever scenarios. They just get dipped into QA sauce like a hairless chicken breast. Same for all other areas described in the exam IMHO. There is a 'great' handbook from some US military on how to develop their software. It is a massive block of everything - but after working on every single item described in there you have in depth know edge about processes, code standards and test coverage.
and then what excactly should happen?
"democracy relies on the informed voter" yeah, get informed by mainstream media - totally does wonders to democracy. did work hefty fine in itally where the former head of state owned a large slice of tv/newspaper. by coincidence he was voted on and on and on. same for some african countries. democracy export country no1 - USA - has just exchanged the single person who controls the media with a network of controllers. so dumb voters will not notice that they are manipulated. "they said it twice on different tv channels, so it must be true". don't know if the US got that from the Germans or the other way around cause they got the same system. And even that system could be applied to HN, too. Just have 10 friends submit, upvote and comment on the latest and greatest technology/company. Readers that just get themselves informed through HN must think that gazillions of people now love and use this technology. Long story short: Do not just consume news. Always ask why you should believe what you just read and who will benefit from you believing that. Now knowing that, ask yourself: What is your benefit from that news again?

My issue is that a few selected countries from Europe do not justify such a headline. Even the article itself states that the service will be named "HBO Nordic AB" (in Sweden). The original source article from Variety has way more information anyway and does make a difference between some European countries and Europa as a whole - so why not link to Variety?

Funny thing: German tax department designed an API around polling tax data primarily for companies. I have to find an english link to the full story, but basically: - company develops api to pull data like a few hundret requests per hour initially, but API returns a 404 after an hour of testing - later that evening API returns an error stirng saying "open from 9 to 12 and 13 to 14:30" - next day tax department calls company saying that they cannot handle those requests as the API was designed to be used once a year and that they crashed the server on and on with the sheer amount of requests

As someone who just recently found HN, all I can say is that the percentage of constructive feedback VS such 'stories' as described above is still great in comparison to the rest of the net. It may have been better in the past but shallowness is what you get when you get more exposure I guess. I do not know if the score system adds to that but up voting great articles or comments is a must. Wish I could down vote to uninteresting stories. But on that matter, what is uninteresting? Surely, nobody needs duplicated stories where each adds only a minor thought. Even spam like stories that float around currently about app.net are pretty 'uninteresting' because the value they add to HN is just non existent. Looks like the typical HN visitor changed, too? Like from founders & entrepreneurs in the past to todays everyday-websters, developers, snarky people and founders?
1and1 is a hosting company for the uneducated masses. Those do not care about telling some 1and1 employee their passwords because they think it is safe to do so. 1and1 is a great hosting company for someone who just needs a website. Nothing more. No Dns handling, passwords over the phone. Great advice has already been given: Leave them and make sure your account is terminated. And I mean really terminated.
Valve is by no means in the "hit business" anymore. They moved on and provide service and content. From the stereotypical hat in games to deliver content from other creators. Not just other developers but players that create content. Parden my language, but srsly, in the long run? What the heck? Steam is now running since ~2004 while being a provider since 2005/6? That are six years of being successful and there is no sign of steam dying anytime soon. "In the long run", like what, 20 years?
Estimating time is no trivial task. From my past experience I can say that it really differs from person to person from team to team. In fact in the past we have wasted so many hours estimating work load, time that could have been better spent on the actual tasks. It took quite some effort to get into a Kanban style process. Not for developers but for business and product managers as their central question 'when?' is meassured differently now. We got away from developers guessing how long it will take and instead take the past performance to guess future timelines. Works better for us. The whole point is: Take burden off your developer, improve your processes around him. Provide better requirements, give valuable feedback, understand issues and risks. The more input from your side, the better the 'estimations' from your developer.
"TRC's are good. They save in long term both the publisher, and the console manifacturer." This is exactly one reason why developers are looking for greener grasses. Jonathan already said it but developers and console manufactures could economically save a lot if those TRC's/TCR's/Lotchecks would be handled more intelligently. Looking at that "save" message, why isn't there a standard message implemented by the manufacturer developers could use? Then you could just make a checkmark in the TRC docs saying "using default save msg" and everyone would save a little time. If I was a manufacturer I would take care that developing for my platform was economically for developers and me alike. And I fail to see some of your arguments for TRC's. What does size (hours, gb, dead animals?) have to do with a game being AAA? Some iOS games deliver a greater quality in terms of customer enjoyment than traditional console 'AAA' games. Furthermore Jonathan was not totally against TRC's but just used examples that make totally sense from a developer perspective.

At first I thought - Jonathan Blow, just another hipster indie game developer - but boy was I wrong. His 'rants' are pretty spot on. The whole market is moving too fast for those Dinosaurs to keep up with competitors. Where Apple and others improved the user experience I hope to see that the Ouya tackles TV based console gaming without the whole baggage of cert, closed platform and super strict rules that limit innovation business and gaming wise.
