Agreed. Cooking up something inventive in the kitchen, chopping ingredients as pans fry minced onions and garlic, throwing new spices together; it's a whole lot of fun. Whenever I have the time, this is something I love to do.

The candy store would be really cool, IMO. Has anyone ever read Chitty Chitty Bang Bang? Of course you've read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. If I ever did a startup, the whole point would be to earn enough money to open something like that, or maybe a toy company. I'd want enough money that I wouldn't have to bow to market forces and could make candy and toys that are actually good (Lego RIP).

This is from talks I've had with parole officers. Often, the prisons can merely act as Criminal U. Coming out it is hard to get a legitimate job, and they've learned more criminal skills while in prison. It's much easier to just go right back into the criminal lifestyle, a vicious cycle.

However, a concern I have with this program is that gang members can bring their criminal connections with them into business. In times of tough competition they may be tempted to use these connections.

I've talked with a couple parole officers and they say the same thing. The people they deal with really have to decide for themselves to change, it isn't a matter of changing their environment.

If 10 minutes is prep time, you can do a whole lot with a crock pot. I also like rice alot, so I include a rice cooker. But, prep only takes 5 minutes, if that. Throw the meat, sauce, and veggies into the crock pot, and rice into the cooker. A couple hours later when I get back home, I have a delicious, warm meal waiting.

I'm skeptical about the standard take on financial freedom. I think that a normal programmer can save enough in 5 years to live overseas off the interest with a comfortable standard of living. So, financial freedom isn't some high and lofty goal for the driven and privileged, but something we all can have fairly easily and dependably.

Things like startups should only be done because they are exciting and fun. Not out of some desperate drive for money.

For me, it's mainly been people and their lives. The ideas and such flow from that.

That is a cool idea. I just finished a class this quarter on distributed systems, which I really liked. I'd be interested in hearing your ideas about P2P. Things like epidemic protocols and chord are pretty clever.

Friends: The RTS

An absolutely huge fort/jungle gym built over a enormous pool and trampoline. Also a really wide, long, steep water slide with ramps.

Windows has had the ability to categorize files for awhile. If you look in a file's properties, you can add custom properties to any file. I don't know if there is a way to use these properties in the file system, though.

My friend and I want to create a roguelike. We hacked stone soup a little, then ran out of time.

I'm interested in EAs like ericb, and want to see, if combined with human creativity, they can produce interesting creatures.

Also, once I have time, I've thought of implementing a MUD in scheme so that it is reprogrammable by the players. I'd use kawa so they also have the power of the java libraries.

My aunt and uncle opened a private bakery where they bake bread mainly for friends. It's really good stuff. I, for one, appreciate freshly baked bread.

Could a person's definition of success change with IQ? Many people we consider geniuses had wide ranging interests, so I'm not sure you would catch many of these people if success is defined as expertise in a specific field, as it seems to be in this article.
